Need First Gen. Advice
GeorgeS replied to abnormalwon's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Other then a few Specific problems with the 83 and 84 Transmission's and Water Pump. ( the impeller ) Those two maintenance problems would be specific to the early years. The early years, did have a Frame Cracking, problem. The 86 and up, do have a Heavier Dry Weight. ( but added storage space ) They all seem to have some problems, with Cracked Plastic parts, ( easy to repair ) They all have pretty much the same Electrical Problem's. 1. Stator's fail, ( fairly common problem ) 2. Some low quality electrical plugs, burn up, and fail ( Wireing harness problems due to ageing and moisture ) 3. Carburetor problems, specificly detoriated diaphrams, and throttle linkage problems. ( Basicly every 1st Gen, needs diaphrams replaced, if never done ) 4. TCI ( ignition box) failures due to Moisture( They all need to be removed and servided ) 5. Throttle cable breakage, ( over 50K ) ( very common problem ) 6. Front Suspension Springs ( worn out over 50K ) ( replace with Progressive Suspension and add a " SuperBrace " 7. Front End Wobble problems. ( Service Steering head bearings ) 8. Various Instrument Panel Warning light problems. 9. Replaceing the Heavy Battery Cables, is common maintenance. 10. Clutch Slippage is VERY COMMON ( Fix, Barnett Clutch ) 11. Early models 83 to 85, has a Water Pump Impeller Issue ( may have been a recall) My 89, has had " ALL " of the Commonly reported problems, I dealt with them all myself. Its at 72K now and running strong !!! ( Better bike now, then when New ) However, haveing said all this, Remember, we are talking about OLD machines 20 PLus years Old, so we are dealing with Mileage and Ageing Issues . ( And if you buy an old one, remember, " DUNCE " the mechanic has probably been working on it sometime dureing all those years ) -
I ran the Avon, to 12K, took it off, put E-3 on Spare Rim and installed. As far as road performance, I can't really tell any difference, Both preform great. Used both in all conditions, Handling great with both tires. Only the Avon, will be a little Squirly for about 3 to 5 hundred miles till it gets broke in. No notice of that with the E-3.

let us know how much heat radiates, from the Rear Pipe, onto the Passenger's right leg. Also, keep a close eye on the Rear Shocks, my brother in laws, shocks started leaking on his, in the first 5000 miles. ( dealer did pay for replacement. ) He also had to install some aftermarket Oil Cooling equipment. Which lowered the OIL Temp by about 60 deg F. Just a few heads up, items.

OK, OLD pads to push pistons, cause they will be damaged in the process. Somthing to Force the pads agianst the Pistons, to Full Bottom position. Lets say a small crow bar. something to Insert between the TWO pads to force the pads to push IN on the Pistions. Then Slowly pump them back toward center, the force them in again. If the master cylinder fills, when compressing pistions, then you will have to let some fluid out for space. This should lossen up the pistons, and make it eaiser to get them out for clean up and a complete rebuild. How many miles on it> ???? If its never been rebuilt, then it needs a complete rebuild with a new Seal Kit.

OK, Do you have a Dremel Tool ??? IF not, good time to buy one. And its a darn handy tool to have. !! ( money well spent for future jobs ) With the various grinding tips avialable you should be able to Grind off the Screw Heads !! Slow Tedious, but should be possible. YOur not going to re use them anyway. Grind off heads, and unit should drop right out. Also, check your Cable's going to TCI, See if they are long enough to reach the top position, if you decide to remount it there. Some bikes the cables are long enough, some are not. I had to add wire length to mine. Also, as long as you Have the Left UPPER Fairing Removed. ----- I know you don't want to hear this--- BUT-- Easy Access. The '"Throttle Joint Unit," if you have never serviced it, Open it up and Clean and Lubricate, everything inside there. ( carefull a spring will FLY OUT !! ) Also--- this is the PERFECT Time to REPLACE the Throttle Cables !!! About $40.00 bucks for a complete new set of 4 !!! ( as long as the upper fairing is removed ) Check the Pull Cable, at the lft Fwd, Carb, if any sign of cable Fraying, Replace the cables. ( Consider the possibility of haveing to replace cables out in Neveda, on highway 50 ) Also, a good time to RESOLDER, the STUDS on both Ends of the + Battery Cable. Also, there is a MAIN GROUNDING STUD, left of bat, on upper fairing member. Remove bolt, Clean, and ReSolder All of the Studs, on the Black Ground Wires that are grounded to this Stud. !! ( Again, Easy Access ) Use CRC 2-26, On EVERY Electrical Connector that you now have Easy ACCESS to. !!! And Lubricate, the Speedo, where the drive cable turns the Bushing, ( lube the bushing ) I know, I talk to much--- Sorry, but its raining today, not much else to do.

Hook back to brake line, Put the two OLD, Pads in place, the use large tool to Fully spread pads, compress the pistons, use pedal to pump them back, then compress them again. Repeat process several times. This might free them.

Rear E3 or Venom
GeorgeS replied to 1sttenor's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
There have been several reports of over 20K with the E-3's . Your milage is somewhat puzzling with the E-3. ??? I agree, the venom's all seem to go about 14K , Mine did. I switched back to the E-3, The old E-II I had few years ago went 20K + -
Check the book value, Trade in and Retail. I would say about 1/2 between those two numbers would be a good place to start. Remember, used bikes are a glut on the market right now. I was checking on the 98 to 02 VL 1500 Suziki, I found about 10 of them sold recently on E-Bay, for about $4,800.00, average Check completed sales on E-Bay for the one you are looking at.

I did notice the same thing on the AVON, for about 200 miles, then they were OK. I think I ended up setting the pressure at about 46 lb. Ride was good after that.

The FJR has a 145 HP, Engine. 650 lb Wet Wgt. ( not dry ) RSTD, has about 96 HP, Engine. 844 lb. Wet Wgt. ( not dry ) A considerable difference in Power to Weight Ratio.

Remove the Air Cleaner Box. You might also have to remove the Battery box. Remove the lower left side fairing. NOT, the upper fairing. Remove the PVC Plastic Heat Shields, they will be in the way. 4 bolts holding it in place. They are #3 Phillips head Screws. Use a 1/4 ratchet handle. Use a #3 TIP, inserted in a Socket. You will most likley need lots of torque to break them loose. ( Don't even think of useing a Stuby Phillips screw driver. You won't be able to get enough torque to break them loose ) Also, consider replaceing the PLUG Wires, while you have Easy access to them. Do a resistance check of the Plug caps also. Also, check all the water hoses on top of engine, you will have access. Check for spilled battery Acid damage also, if you pull the battery box. Clean the 4 Plugs going to the Ignition Coils.

I just checked Conti Web site: That looks like their highest quality tire , highest priced line that fits these bikes. I used a TK-17 on my 89 1st Gen, it ran 13K and was still good for about 3k more. No problems. I also used Conti's on my 79 Bemer years ago. Always had good luck with them. Have not heard anything bad about Conti tires. Not to many reports about Conti tires on this web site.

Where can I find a fuse
GeorgeS replied to algie1100's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Sombody said he found an IN LINE 30 Amp replacement. Other then ordering from, Yamaha, don't know. The Fuse holder units do come up on E-Bay from time to time. Sombody on this web site might have one. I will do some searching ON Line, for a Wire In, IN LINE, fuse holder, let you know if I find anything. Check, Radio, and Electronic Supply companies. -
Look at it this way, how much sales tax would you have to pay on a new Bike ?? Once you get it going, and all the cob webs worked out, you have a machine that would run over 150K or more miles. Compare to a new bike , plus sales tax. These bikes run to well over 150K. Most of the problems only need to be fixed Once, and then normal maintenance, and your on the road !!! Whatever problems you run into, the guys here will have the answers for you !!

Are there any major Bike Dealers where you are located ? If so, most any bike dealer might carry this plugging Kit. This Plugging Kit, will repair most any Nail Puncture, If you can find one. ( These Plugging Kits WORK !! ) Throw in a can of Tire Sealer avialable at most any auto parts store. Not a permanent fix, but should get you down the road to a dealer somplace that can Replace the Tire. Post your exact location, There might be a member within close proximity that can come to your assistance.

Again, open each carb drain, one at a time. Ign ON, let the fuel pump run some fuel through Each carb. One at a time. Make sure you get about the same flow thru each drain. Have you checked your " Idle Mix Adjustment Needle Valves " ?? Remove lead seal, on each carb, Screw out ( carefully ) needle valve on each carb. Clean the Fine Threads. Then re install to full closed, and open to 2 1/8 turns. After a couple more tanks with SEA - FOAM, you will be ready to do a CARB SYNC proceedure. ( see service manual )
