Back around 1988 to 1990, not sure exactly anymore, when I was still rideing the old Beemer. I was headed over the Cascades, on I-90 enroute to Ellensburg Wa. I stopped at the Rest Stop about half way. There was a nearly new Harley parked, with a trailer if I remember correct. So I'm walking towards the free Coffee, ( yes you can get free coffee at rest stops in Wa. ) and I spot Two Elderly ladies, I estimated, in their 80's ( at the time ) walking toward the Harley. Hmmm?? says I, to me. ???? Interesting --- So I watch, as they head straight to the Harley, put on the helmets, jackets, and gloves, Mount up, and head out East on I-90. Its a very busy rest stop, and lot of folks were doing double takes, as they rode off. OK, about 6 months later, I'm reading one of the cycle magazines, and here is a story about the Grandma from ( I think Mass. or N.H. somplace around there ) who had been rideing back seat with her husband since they were married back in the 30's sometime. Her husband passed away when she was about 78. At about the age of 82 she just could not take it any more. ( Not being on the road, that is ) So, she bought a small bike, took rideing lessons, and at the age of 84 bought a new Harley !!! The story went on how she, and one of her best friends, went on a Bike trip down east coast, then to Calif, then up to Alaska, then back to Wa. then took I-90 back to the home in the N.E corner of the country. I distinctley recall, that she was 84 at the time they set out on the circle the U.S Trip ( with Alaska thrown in ) I finished the story in the mag. Then I realize, that must have been the two ladies I saw that day at the rest stop on I-90!! Anyway to grandma !!! Whoever she was.

If fuel is running out of those 4 hoses, that run from top of each Carb, to the rear and down to front of rear wheel. then, your Float Valves are Stuck in the open position. Drain each bowl, and run Heavy dose of SEA-Foam. Say about 1/2 can for 2 gallons. Drain Carb bowl everyday for about a week, and SeaFoam might free up the Float Valves. (( Maby )) Did you DRAIN THE GAS TANK??? COMPLETLY !!!! ???- 23 replies

Question about an 85 vr
GeorgeS replied to a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Ditto, on the above items. --- Also: Get a can of CRC ( brand name ) 2-26, electrical contact cleaner. Give the Ignition Switch a Bath. Give the RUN-STOP Switch a Bath. ( blow out both with compressed air ) Remove the TWO plugs from the TCI. ( under air cleaner box ) and clean the pins on both plugs with the CRC stuff. Also, Inspect the " Ignition Fuse " in main fuse block, the tang that hold the fuse in place, might be loose, or ready to break off. Polish the holder clips. Also, replace the 15 Amp fuse there, ( slight possiblity, very slight, that the fuse is going bad ) All 4 plug wires, Screw them out of the plug caps, and Ignition coils, and NIP OFF about 1/4 inch of the plug wire, and re-install. ( the wire, screws in and out ) ( it does, trust me ) Run 1/2 Can of SEA-FOAM, with 1/2 tank of Gas. Drain all 4 Carb bowls, Each has a seperate Drain hose. #2 phillips, to open the Drain lines. Remove the Hose from Petcock, and Completly DRAIN, the Fuel tank !!!! -

Maintenance NIGHTMARE
GeorgeS replied to NV_Trucker's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Might be just water in the tank. After, draining the Carb Bowls, and fresh gas, use the SEA-FOAM, and maby 1/4 can of HEET, also. Also try a new set of plugs. Also, you might have a Bad, Ignition Coil. After running the sea foam with all new gas, and get some running time, then Pull out the Plugs, and see what they look like. Post Pictures of the Plugs if you can, here on the site, ( close ups ) Also, completly Drain the Fuel Tank-- And drain the Carb Bowl, several times during a week, with Sea Foam in the Gas. -
Upgrade brakes?
GeorgeS replied to Iowa Guy's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I have never had surging on my Venture Brakes. Haveing said that, a new set of pads might fix that. As to motorcycle brake pads, in general. Over the years, I have had a strict rule concerning my brake pads. When they are 50 Precent Worn down, I replace them !!!! I don't care how much they cost, My Life is worth much more then a set of brake pads . Its Cheap Insurance. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! As to the statement by the guy who sold you the bike that he only used the Rear Brakes. ( that opens up another can of worms ) !!! Your Front Brakes, Are 80 Percent of your Stopping power, and this is true on any motorcycle . ( This is a fact, I don't care what anybody else says as to this ) Anybody who rides a motorcycle, who says he only will uses the Rear Brakes, bcause he is afraid to use the fronts, I'm sorry to say, needs to go back to Motorcycle Rideing School. I have been rideing my 89 since 93. I have never had to go to full lock up on both wheels with this bike, however I have had all 3 sets of pads smokeing!! ( literally ) On my 79 BMW R100T, I did go to full lock up, more then once, and about 3 years ago on the Busa, I also did an emergency stop, due to traffic, and actually went to full LOCK up on both wheels. ( The bike DID NOT Flip over, !!! ) All bikes, are different as to brakeing power, due to brake design, and weight of the motorcycle. They are all different. You need to Practice, Practice, Practice, brakeing to learn the bike you are rideing. ( I suggest a large parking lot on Sunday Morning ) And Back roads. Practice, makes perfect as they say. If your bike has low miles as you said, I doubt those Calipers have ever been rebuilt. Have you Bleed out , and Replaced ALL the Brake Fluid from both Systems ??? IF not, there is WATER, MOISTURE, in your brakeing system !!! ( DOT-3 Brake Fluid Collects moisture ) Replace the fluid with Dot -4 or Synthectic brake fluid. Replace ALL the Fluid with Valvoline Synthectic Fluid. That Might fix the problem, but I still think you need to rebuild the Calipers. And replace ALL the Pads. -
I think the national divorce rate is running around 50 percent. So , based on that I'm pretty sure your not alone in whatever boat you are in. Same thing happened to my son three weeks ago, she filed the papers. Needless to say, things are in a turmoil around here. Main thing is keep your motor running good.

Have the Calipers on this bike ever been Rebuilt?? If not, the calipers need a Rebuild. ( 20 year old bike ) ( 20 year old rubber seals on those caliper pistons ) New pads, might help, but those calipers need a re-build. -
Don't ever do that again ---

Even if your an expert at driveing in the stuff---- Bumper Cars is not fun, and gets expensive !!!

Do you have an Ohm meter?? If So: Remove ALL light Bulbs---- Head, tail, and marker. Remove the Head, and Signal Fuse--- Now take Resistance Readings From output side of fuse holders to Ground. ( If there is a Short, you should see a very LOW Ohm reading, say 10 ohms or less, maby a dead short. ) If so, the follow out that circuit. With bulbs ( all of them ) removed, and fuse's remove, you should see ( and OPen circuit to ground, ) ie. No Resistance, no connection to ground. You might have TWO seperate problems. ( based on what you have said. )

Verrrry Interesting as they say. Pull the Headlight fuse, then check the signals. ( might work ) Pull the Signal Fuse, then check the Headlights. Is this both, front and rear Turn signals working opposite sides ??? Has sombody, Added, ANY, lighting equipment to this bike ??? IF So, the Follow the NEW wireing that was installed, inch by inch, and assume that " Duffus " whoever he was, made a mistake. If you find ANY, ADDed Black Taped, Connections, remove the tape and Inspect. If you find any TWISTED, Splices, covered with black tape, be sure to Solder the new connections. Look for ANY runs of Wire, that is NOT an integral part of the Wireing Harness. IF you find any, then inspect every inch of the added wireing. IF you find any more " Clues " post them, need a bit more information to work with.

OK, took first ride today with the new jacket. 48 deg. when left, 51deg on return home. 2 hour ride. Jacket, with T-shirt, and one fairly heavy cotton shirt on under the jacket. Verdict is-- Stayed perfectly comfortable, not cold, not hot. I will estimate that if I replaced the cotton shirt, with a Wool shirt, the Jacket will be good down to about 40 deg. F. Below that, I would need the electric vest. So, I'm very happy with this jacket. Fit is a little tight, but thats what I like, I hate loose fitting clothing. The Armor installed in Elbows, shoulders, and back, Seems bulky when putting the jacket on, however once under way ( a little navy talk there ) I don't even notice it. Arm movement seems good. My chest measurement is 44 inches, I got the Medium size.(( 44 )) ( this per suggestion on the " NewEnough " website, where I ordered it from ) They stated that these jackets run a little on the large side. I would have to say this is the most comfortable I have been at 50 deg. with just one jacket on, over an average wgt cotton shirt. Also, the new Hot Grips, with 40 gram thinsulate gloves worked just fine at 50 deg. I tried them last week, same gloves at 33 deg. F. and I would say my hands were getting cold. However I'm not in habit of rideing in that cold temps, so won't worry about it. If your in a motorcycle supper store, and they have them, try one on.

Broken C.L.A.S.S. display
GeorgeS replied to 83VR3711's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Yes, it should shut down when the desired setting is reached, Low, med. or High. Or select manual, and hold button, watch numbers change. If pressure is showing, instead of Error Code. it should be working OK. -
Well, now you will never get that big Grin from last week Off your face !!!! Ride Safe, my friend!!! --------------

Dashlight bulb
GeorgeS replied to Big Daddy's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Look at it this way, if the Engine and Transmission are good in your bike, then its worth fixing everything else. The total cost of parts to do ALL the Improvements and mods, would be about $1200 for the parts, plus your work. Compare that to just the sales tax on a new $20K bike. -
The top pad claims to be sheep skin. ?? --- Can't answer your question untill I use it for a long ride. I guess you can refference any information about sheep skin, wool covered seat pads. Sombody should know the answer to that.

Check the Switch on clutch lever, it disengages the Cruze, when clutch pulled. Was very common problem on 1st Gens, it may be same on 2nd gens, but I'm not sure. I made a small bracket to hold the switch tightly in place, on my 89. That fixed the problem.

Today finished the Installation of the 1 1/2 Squrare LED Bulb units, in the Rear Center Reflector unit. Turned out to be more trouble then I expected. Had to cut a 1 5/8 x 1 1/4 hole thru the back side of the reflector Unit. Had to leave 3/4 inch space on the outer side, between new bulb and turn signal. Then was enough space to fit the LED units inside the Reflector lens. I then made a thin metal panel, to cover the hole, and installed with Pop Rivits, and Sealed everything with black Silastic. No bulb socket used, I removed the plug installed on the new units, and Hard wired everything. Made the connection to Brake light wire. at the 3 wire plug, about 10 inches from the OEM Tail/brake light unit. The Yellow wire at this plug is the Brake light Voltage source. Works, good, Now have 2 extra, bright brake lights.

Dashlight bulb
GeorgeS replied to Big Daddy's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
While you are in that area: Couple more items. Lubricate the Bushing where the Speedometer cable connects to the Speedo unit. ( and greese the speedo cable, pull out of sheath, and hand greese the cable ) Replace All the bulbs, I think there are 4 of them. If you are haveing any False Warning messages, its a good time to do the Resoldering job on the Computer Monitor unit. as long as you have the Dash Panel removed.
