for 1st gen, is 2.4 to 3.0 Ohms thru the Primary winding, And-- 10.6K to 15.8K Ohms thru the Secondary. A 2nd gen coil should be about the same. All you need is an ohm meter. Go to the Service manual in the 2nd gen maintenance library, Electrica, section, the go to the Ignition System Section.

This is part of the reason, I stick with the old 89 !! All the money I save on not paying Sales Tax, and Interest, ( not to mention the actual price ) of a new Bike, or especially a ( Harley ) allows me to continue to waste, money, time , garage space, buy more tools, plan for modifications, order parts, do modificaitons, cusss, swear, drink gallons of coffee in the garage, purchace new tools that will only be used once, and on and on, etc. etc ----- I usually don't worry about a little dirt, or " Oil Seepage " as long as all my " Mods" are working correctly. However, thru it all--- I have not had to do an Engine Rebuild !!! ( notice, I left an opening there for sombody else to jump into )

Well, every engine I ever owned, has some oil seepage somplace -- As long as my coffee cup is full, I usually don't worry about " seepage " And if the wife, has a smile on her face, I really don't worry about oil seepage !!!!!

Disappearing fuel
GeorgeS replied to Ivan's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Thats a new one !!! --- I would say, put it outside, add maby 1/2 gallon, put newpaper under the bike, and post your guard dog to watch it. !! OK, first place I would check, is the Fuel Petcock. It has a rubber gasket between the valve, and bottom of tank. Check the two small bolts that hold the petcock in place. now Inspect the Fuel Line that runs from the petcock, across under the tank to the Fuel filter. That Line Might be leaking. There is a Clamp, welded to bottom of tank, that holds this fuel line in place. The cross over line, that is. then check the fuel line from the Fuel filter, going to the Fuel Pump. then Check the Fuel Pump itself. It is a Two Part Unit, Gasket between the two parts. which might be leaking. Only other thing would be a leak in the Tank Itself, However this would be an obvoious leak !!! And if tank is empty, bone dry as you say, would have to be near the lowest Point of the Tank. ???? -
What a Ride!!!
GeorgeS replied to Kurt827's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The Anti Dive is Electric. when you apply brakes, electric signal, pulls the A/D Solinoid, that closes oil passage, to keep front from diveing. That cannot make the caliper lock up. Did you keep the fluid level in Rear Resovoiur down at least 1/2 inch from top of filler plug. ? After what happened, I would not run that bike untill the Rear Master cylinder has been rebuilt or replaced, And, rebuild the left front. !!! -

Ebay Carb. Diaphragm Replacement!
GeorgeS replied to skydoc_17's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
This posting needs to be added to the Maintenance Library !!!!!!! -
Well with that many folks showing, up, if each person spent just $5.00, seems like the town would benifit to a great extent. In reality, I would estimate the average person spending a day in town is going to spend more like $50.00 Seems like a loose loose situation for the town if they cancel the event.

buckeye stator install
GeorgeS replied to jlh3rd's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I always bring up the point of " soldering " Whenever makeing a Wire Splice on any motorcycle, or even an Automobile ( Especially Adding Trailer lighting ) components. Why? There are still folks out there, useing the old time honered, method of just Twisting the Wires Together, and applying Black Tape !!! I understand, we can't all be electricians--- Trust me !!! Solder any connections you make on your motorcycle, God will smile on your efforts !!! Keep the following items On Hand, if you are going to work on your bikes wireing system. 1. a good soldering Iron. 2. Rosin Core Solder. 3. Heat Shrink Tubeing, insulation. 4. Wire Strippers, ( ie. a good quality one ) 5. Yes, and Black Tape, It has its uses, After Heat Shrink tubeing. 6. A good supply of Nylon Tye-Raps ( various sizes 's ) 7. And, spend $50 buck or more on a good Digital Volt/Ohm Meter !! ( and read the instructions that come with it, ) 8. PRINT OUT THE SCHEMATICs, FOR YOUR MOTORCYCLE, 9. If you don't know what you are doing with electricity, Find some help !!! And remember, this basic Tennent !! A High Resistance Contact, ( ie. Splice ) Is A Heating Element--- And that is NOT Good !!! -
After Bleeding Brakes

Normally 1/2 inch of space is enough for expansion. Did you do anything except bleeding. ?? Did you replace All the Fluid ?? -
86'VR Starter Solenoid?!?!
GeorgeS replied to skydoc_17's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Goes to the Start/CutOff Relay, makes contact, then L/W ( Blue/White ) wire goes to the Start switch button, and gets a ground when push button. Dissconnt pull apart connector close to Solinoid, Use ohm meter, Check for a ground on the wire, when you push Start button. In neutral, clutch in, stand up. Check the side stand switch, might not be closeing. -
At least a Max, is rideable. Check with " Squeez " He knows !!!

Thats why you should always carry a Good Tire Plugger Tool, and an Air Pump on long trips !!! ( And use " Ride-On " ) You do not want to have to do that in the middle of Nevada, on Highway #50 !!! Also, the Caseing of an Elite 3, is 1/2 inch thick--- And the Caseing of an D-404, is only 1/4 inch thick --- Plus the Tread, on both of course !! ( worth considering )

buckeye stator install
GeorgeS replied to jlh3rd's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Its heavy wire, so strip back 2 inch of insulation. Twist together, useing Western Union Splice, then Solder the new connection, Use ROSIN CORE SOLDER !!! Then Apply, at least, A Double layer of HEAT SHRINK TUBEING !!! Do Google Search, """ Western Union Splice """ if you don't know what it is. DO NOT !!!!! JUST TWIST THE WIRES TOGETHER AND APPLY BLACK TAPE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -
Sorry, forgot to take photos . But its straight forward. On back side of reflector unit, measure in from left and right side about 1 inch. then From top, of back ( very top ) 1 1/2 wide by 1 1/8 rectangular hole. Cut it out with a Dremel Tool. Then just slide in the 1 1/2 Square light unit. The unit is about 1/2 inch thick with bulbs mounted. I made a cover over the hole, with 1/64 thick brass material. Pop rivieted the 4 corners, used black Silastic to make water tight Seal. I cut off the Bulb socket that was mounted on the light unit, and soldered on #18 extension wires ( spliced to existing ) Covered the new wires with 3/16 heat shrink, to make new cableing. Taped into the Brake light wire, about 10 inches forward of the Existing light unit. There is a plug there. Left side, The two lower tail light bulbs are small 1864 bulbs, mounted in the same reflector unit.

just replaceing the Springs might do it. Or just replace the pressure plate assembly with a Barnett Unit. Usually the Plates are not worn, it usually just weak springs. Aftermarket complete replacement clutch and pressure , is about the same cost as OEM parts. I guess it depends on how long you intend to keep the bike on the road, as to how much to spend. But if stock spring replacement will do the job, that s the cheapest fix.

Found it, from " Comfort Max Gel Pad " http://www.amspecialtiesusa.com/gelpad.htm After finding the cost of the raw material, I decided that just buying the pad from this supplier, was the most cost, and time effective. I ordered the size, " Large " which was the best fit for the two bikes, different size seats. Works for both. I installed it last week, and have made two 50 mile rides with it on the Venture, and so far seems comffy. But of course, the acid test will be a 10 hour day on I-5. Check this thread for a bit more info, and photo's http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=31569 Few other folks, posted some comments as to this product there also --

Leaking gas from the air cleaner
GeorgeS replied to Espey's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Each carb, has a hose running down toward the front of the rear wheel. Find the ends of those 4 hoses, make sure they are not plugged. Most likley the Float valve for one carb is stuck in the open position. also, if tank is almost empty, its a good time to completly Drain the tank--- then , new gas, and Sea-Foam -
Real Problems Now- Antifreeze-
GeorgeS replied to WAC1972's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
sounds like just One fairly good leak, and the water pump is pumping it out. Maby one hose, cracked open, of one Clamp let loose. Hose it off, let it dry, then start up and try to locate where it starts comeing from. should not be to hard to spot the leak if its that big. -

Repaired That Pesky Radiator Drain!
GeorgeS replied to skydoc_17's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I got mine resealed with new O-Rings, and stopped leaking. After that I never used it again--- I simply use the drain plug under the Water Pump unit, flush the system with garden hose a couple times, redrain, and refill. I drain and refill mine at least once a year.
