I would have him follow you, either on his bike, or car, just to prove to him that it runs OK. A bike like that !!! NO WAY !!!! Also, to start, I would want to see his drivers licence, with M/C endorsment. Also, what does he drive up to your house in, A bike, a new car, or a Junker ??? OR, take him for a ride on the back seat, to show him it runs OK. Also, how old he is, would be another big factor. But haveing said all the above, I still say NO !! If he is qualified, to ride a bike like that , HE WILL UNDERSTAND, why you don't want to let him ride it. I have a similiar bike, would I let sombody test ride it ??? NO WAY!!!! Only the guy I bought it from, cause I know he is qualified on a Race Track . ( And I worked with him for 20 years, tool box's in hand ) Anyway, thats my 2-Cents worth.

GeorgeS replied to ponz's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
2 1/8 to 2 1/4 turns from bottom, is correct for the 1st gens. Not sure if 2nd gens are the same, but should be about the same. -
Did I break it?
GeorgeS replied to 83VR3711's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I would put bike on center stand, and rotate tire by hand, and try to run thru gears with the other hand on the lever. What do you feel ?? See if you can run it thru the gears by hand . Might be problem with the shift linkage, There are two more pivot points and a linkage located Under the rear Case cover. Might be a problem with that linkage. Or one of the 4 pivot points, of the linkage. If not that, then I guess next thing would be remove the clutch cover, and clutch basket. Check the shifting mechanism located under the Clutch Basket. Pull that up in the service manual, to have a look at what is involved. -
Tires for a 2007 RSV ? Avon? E3 ?
GeorgeS replied to FL-Venture-Rider's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
One other brand of tire, thats seems to never be mentioned on this web site. Thats the Continental TK series. I have used one of these on my 89 rear. It performed just fine, and lasted about 13k, and when removed , it still might have gone another 2K. Also, I ran these tires on My BMW, R100T from 1983 till 1993. Ran about 50K on several of them, and had ZERO problems. I only bring this up, to stir up some more Controversy, concerning Tires Any comments ?? -
Measure the tread depth at outer edge, then at dead center. Let us know what you find.

Try lubricating the switch on the clutch lever. Use Electrical contact cleaner. -
Fork Brace torque spec...?
GeorgeS replied to jasonm.'s topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Well the front suspension on these bikes, leave's something to be desired. When mine was New, I did not feel safe with this suspension system, on high speed turns and curves. After installing Progressive Springs, and the Super brace, there is an improvement. In average driveing condx, don't notce anthing. However , when I get into High Speed curve's the thing tracks better. Its a subjective comment. Put it this way, It might keep bad things from happening. You may never know it, but thats good, at least from my perspective. I checked the book, and could not identify the torque settings. but I set mine at 15lb. and when took them off at a later date, setting was still good. -
Car engine oil for the RSV ?
GeorgeS replied to FL-Venture-Rider's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Before I switched to Mobil 1, I used Castrol 20W 50W or 15W 40, Petroleum oil in my BMW for 12 years, and the first 50K on the 89 Venture. Always had good luck with that oil. Anyway, if you don't like Synthetic oil, I consider Castrol a very good alternative. -
Is this HP difference, dependant on the Size of the Carb throats ?? Maby thats the only real difference. What was it 28MM on the early ones, and 32 MM on the later ones. ??

#1 not firing
GeorgeS replied to midnightsunrider's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Go to the service manual, ( on this web site in 2nd gen maint. library ) if you don't have one. Do the resistance check. But, It might still be bad, even if resistance check is good. Try swapping the Input wires, and the Plug wire to another cylinder, see what happens. there have been several reports of failed Ing Coils, here on this web site for 2nd gens. But, thats a lot of work, you might as well get a new one, and even if its not the problem, then you have a spare. ( I always carry one on trips. ) -
A local dealer has a New RSV, left over, advertised for $10,400, plus shipping and set up. Check all dealers in your area, for left overs. If you want a plain jane RSV

Also, of note, the D404 series Dunlops, are not same quality as the E-3 Series. Most average milage reports from the D-404 is + or - 8K, The E-3 series, some folks have reported over 20K. I ran an E-2 (previous model ) to about 22K, still no tread showing. I think the lowest milage report is about 15k. ( at least that I have seen ) The E-3 is Dunlops tire for the Gold Wing, heavy tankers !!! The cost more, but are well worth the extra bucks. The D404's are good tires for a bike that weighs 500 or less lb. and one rider. As to the Metz's, well just to many reports of chunking out.

Auto parts store, get a Bosh Relay. Use #16 or #14 wire from battery, thru an in line fuse ( 15 amp ) to the Relay and from relay to the new horn. Use the Original Horn button wireing, to control the Relay. The horn button " gets " a ground, use that to trigger the relay. You might want to use Two Fiam Horns. OR-- look for a " Carrand " brand horn. Avialable from some auto parts, or they can order. They are actually Stiebel Horns from Itally. "" LOUD "" 138 db. horns. They are packaged under the " Carand " brand name. Physically, they are same size, and mount the same way as the Fiam Horns you have. Cost, about $18.00 each.

Only place I know of is order from Yamaha. The parts for the petcock must be ordered individually. Look in the IPC on line. Yamaha motor company. You will see the Screens that stick up into the tank, I think they might be plugged ! There is a gasket, and I think some seals. Remove the petcock, remove the quantity Sensor plate from top of tank, and clean out the tank. -
Switch located behind the aft case cover left side of engine. Reomve aft cover for access. The Switch sends a ground for each gear, to the instrument panel. The contacts get worn down. You have to remove the switch, and replace, or what I did was build up the copper contacts with thin coating of solder. But there could be a bad wire from the switch to the Indicator. Open switch, and apply a ground, light should come on. Also, remember, the bulb in the light Might be burnt out.

OK, sounds like fuel starvation, my Busa does, that cause the Filters in the fuel line plug up from all the Crap that they put in gas now. But that another story. OK, Another Job, you have to cover, In Addition to Just Draining the Fuel tank. Sorry, !! ( I really am ) Drain the Tank Again !! --- Then Remove the Petcock Aseembly from bottom right side of tank. WHY?? There are Screens Mounted on top of the Petcock, I think they are Pluged, Only way to get to them is Drop out the Petcock assembly, Also remove the Fuel sender Unit from top of the tank and Clean out the tank. Most likley you will have to order parts, and Rebuild the Petcock Assembly !! ----- DON'T tear into the carbs again, untill you do this job !! I think the bottom of your tank has a lot of Solid, Crud at bottom of the tank !!!!!
