There is a large School Parking Lot in Santa Clarita, Calif. Every weekend folks bring their For Sale, Car's RV's , and Motorcycles there to sell. Brother in law said two weeks ago couple Very Low Milage Harleys, one with only 800 miles, the other with about 7,000. Asking price on both of them around $8,000. Lots of folks on west coast, ( esp California need money ) Anyway, if your seriously looking for a Harley, check around Calif. Lots of deals, or probably any State for that matter.

I use mobil I the heavy wgt stuff: If clutch slipping, easy fix is just a new set of springs. Cheap, easy to change. I have heard that the V-Max springs are Stronger, Or Install an Aftermarket Clutch, that will deffinatly cure any clutch slippage. I am running the Barnett Clutch, No more problems, its been in there now for 50K, still going strong.

Check the Fuel tank Vent hose. remove the hose at tank under seat. There is a Very small hole, be sure its open. I would also suggest Completly Draining the Fuel tank, and each of the 4 Carb bowls. Each Bowl, has a seperate Drain Valve. Opens with a Screwdriver. Note each carb has a small drain hose. To drain the tank, remove the hose at the petcock, be sure to use the " reserve " position of the petcock to completly drain the tank. You might need to remove the Ignition Control Unit, from under the battery box, then open the computer box, and Dry out the Moisture in the box. ( They all have Moisture inside the Ignition unit. ) Also, check the Fuse Holders for makeing tight connection to the fuse itself, The prongs that hold the fuses are made of " brittle material " come loose, and do not make good contact. Also, Use, " Electrical Contact Cleaner " on the " Run- Stop " Switch. These switches get corroded, and turn to high resistance contacts. This will cause LOW voltage, to the Ignition Unnit. Also, remove the TWO plugs from the Ignition Unit, and clean contact with electrical contact cleaner. Also, there is a five wire cable from Ignition unit running down to the pick up coils under left crank case cover, About half way, enroute, is a pull apart plug. Carefull inspect and clean the contacts in this plug, ( If bad contacts here, NO IGNITION TO Plugs ) That should get you started !!! good luck -
A fellow I worked with about 7 years had a dirt bike stolen from his apartment parking lot. around 1995. In 2002 he gets a letter from some police dept. in Oregon State somplace , saying they had his bike in a holding lot. It also stated that he had 3 days to pick it up, or start paying $ 75.00 a day storage. He went down a hauled it back to Seattle. It had been well taken care of and was in running condition. Other then a few minor repairs.

My 2 cents worth here. Growing up in Minnesota, during the 50's and 60's. For 16 years of school, I seem to recall maby 3 or 4 times in all those years the schools were closed, due to snow. This only happened if there was a Full Blizzard Warning.

Pull off the rear drive unit, take apart, clean everything, and " Greese It " !! Also pull the drive shaft out, and Greese the forward Spline. ( very important to do this ) ( Do this every time you replace your rear tire )
-
You migh try running " Cleanup " a couple of times, And run " defrag " a couple times. This might help. Also be sure you clean out all old e-mails if its been awhile.

Vmax wheels & tires on VR?
GeorgeS replied to GaryZ's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
If you are talking about a 1st gen, you can't go with Wider Tires, there is no clearance with the drive shaft for a wider tire. -
This situations comes up quite often. Even if the Car driver did somthing, when your on a bike, the car driver has the upper hand, ( and his other hand might have a gun it it ) Best, to just go on your way, and be glad you are still alive---
-
If you liked the harley, you will like a 2nd gen even better.

Rear suspension bushings
GeorgeS replied to islandmech's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Any old 1st gen, with about 75K or more, needs to have these bolts and bushings pulled out, and most likley replaced . ( Or at least , hand greesed ) I know-- Its not covered in the service manual. -
Final Drive/Drive shaft help...
GeorgeS replied to jrcain32's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Put it this way, Bearing Greese !!! Greese the Spline Forward end, Aft End, And the large splines in the Rear Drive. Greese Everything, and do it often!! Don't worry about what kind of greese, just be darn sure you Greese It !!!! Every time you Replace your Rear Tire, GREESE EVERYTHING !!!!!!!!!!!! ---AND AS LONG AS YOUR AT IT !!! Look at the bottom of your Rear Suspension Shock absorber-- There are 3 Long bolts mounted horizontally, for the Suspension Linkage-- Find them, Remove them, Clean them, and GREESE THEM ALSO !! ( don't argue about this, just do it ) You might find that the bolts are all corroded, and the bushings are in about the same condition. If so, Replace, and you can also Install ZERK Fittings for these bolts, so in future you can keep them " Greesed !! " -
And Also, check the Intake Manifolds, where they bolt to the Heads. The O-Rings there are small diameter. Even if replaced, they can still leak. Also, only 2 bolts holding them onto the heads. Some folks have reported that a Gasket Sealant in addition to the O-Rings is needed. Also, double check the Clamps above and below, the Carbs for Vaccume leaks. Also, just to cover this point. You are aware that these engines " Run like Crap " if the Air Cleaner Cover is NOT INSTALLED !!!! One other thing to check, is the plug wires if you have not replaced them. The wires will screw out of the Caps, And, the Coils. Remove the wires, ( they are solid copper core wire ) and nip off about 1/4 inch of the ends, and rescrew them back into place. ( as they might not be makeing a good electrical connection ) ( To replace the wires, just buy some bulk solid core plug wire at most any Auto Parts store. I would check at a NAPA auto parts for some of this ) One other point, on the " Idle Mix Adjust Screw setting " 1 1/8 to 1 1/4 turn CCW from the full closed setting is the agreed upon correct setting. This point is not covered in the Service Manual. Also, did you Carefully inspect these jet needles to be sure they are not Damaged ??? If so, you should replace them. Another Problem Point, is when Replaceing the Diaphram covers, you have the large O-Ring, and the Small one. any chance you forgot to install the small O-Ring at bottom of the diaphram Cover. ( I did that once ) Simply missed one of them. Also, there have been reports of the Large O-Ring not makeing a good seal, when replaceing the Diaphram cover. Double check those.

I been busy building Ham Radio Antenna's for the last 2 months, BUT!! I will be back !!!! ( Oh, and the new antenna's are working Great !!! ) Winter tune up time just around the corner, for the 89, Time to do a Valve Adjust, and the Darn Rt. front fork seal is leaking again.

Under the current Economic, conditions, it might go " Cheap " !!!

Did you try Charging it !! With a 6 to 10 amp charger for about 8 hours.?? AGM type, you have to charger at a High Amperage Rate: Check voltage, NO LOAD, with a Digital voltmeter, 12.8 is fully charged. 12.4 or less, its under 40 percent charged. Your AGM battery is NOT a 12V battery. Its a 12.8 Volt battery. Even the AGM types need to be Charged now and then. I think in your case, " then is now " At least give it a try befor you spend money on a new battery.

No power to bike
GeorgeS replied to Bill Feehan's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Do any of the lights, or horn, or radio work?? Or is it just the Starter. If nothing else works, check the Main, 40 Amp fuse, in the PigTail comeing OFF the Pos battery terminal -
Dead short, no power, need help
GeorgeS replied to RockinRuss's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Remove All the fuses, except the " Ignition fuse " Use wireing diagram, to be sure you find All of them. See if engine will start, and run ( After Charging the battery of course ) If OK, the start to RE-Install the fuses one at a time, test everything on that fuse circuit, untill something goes wrong. Now you have some idea where to look if there is still a problem. -
