Sounds like the minimum you can get by with, is a New Gasket, for the cover, and a new set of Springs. Your PLATES are Not worn out. General consencious is that the plates Do Not wear much at all. But the Springs are to weak, I had the same problem at about 35K, I installed a Barnett Clutch, But, $$$$ Just order a new set of Stock, or V-Max springs. and a New Gasket for the Cover. They are EASY to change, No Big Deal, ( a 1 bottle of Beer Job ) !!!! I think, cost is about $25.00 Approximatly.

I think?? it means, he did the same as I did, after about 37 years, I resigned. I did some serious research, into past history, found out a few things about the organization I did not agree with. I deal with " The Man " more directly now, seems to be working pretty good.

Bike looks great, but you really should clean the garage!

If sitting, and not run all winter, I would --- Drain, gas tank, ( Put old gas in the pick up truck ) Also, drain all 4 carb bowls !!! Refill, and add, Sea Foam. ( run 2 tanks with sea foam added ) Check tires, pressure, and inspect for damage, and Hidden Nails !! ( you never know what you might find stuck in the tire treads ) Check Battery Fluid Level, and Charge Battery with a BATTERY CHARGER, NOT, a Trickle charger, Change the Oil, and Filter. Tire Pressure, check Check brake pads for wear, Good time to replace if needed.

Just replace the Springs, if money is tight !! Most likley will be good for another 20 to 30K
-
I would at least Drain the Oil, into a Clean container, then Filter the old oil, see if you find any abnormal metal flakes !! ReFill to top of Filler Plug.

Can't you get temporary Transit pass's up there. Here we just buy Temp 1 or 2 day paper transit pass. I did this from Calif to Seattle. The Calif pass was good for Calif, and Oregon. but need a second one for Wa. Re-Check with your motor Vehical department. There must be a way around this.

That sounds about right! Trying to save money on brakes, is not a good idea !

On the 1st gens, the wires are Solid Copper core. And easy to replace. On 2nd gens, as Squid said, the wire comes molded to the Coils. Depending on Milage I doubt the wires need to be replace, if bike is running OK. You might just remove the Resistor Caps from the wirs, and Make sure the connections there are good.

Remember, this is supposed to be " Fun " !!!!!

bleeding brakes
GeorgeS replied to barend's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
You have to bleed the Rear, and left front, Go back and forth, Bleed the L- Front, then Rear, then front , back and forth. Bleed LOTS Of Fluid from both !!! Make sure you get ALL, of the fluid Replaced. Do you know how long its been since the fluid in this brake system has been replaced?? If a lot of years, the stuff is CRUDDY!! REPLACE ALL OF THE FLUID. Also, after you get them working, Be sure to leave at least 1/2 to 1 inch of space in the Fluid Resovoiur, for HEAT EXPANSION OF THE FLUID. IF NOT, the heat from rear Exhaust will over heat the fluid, IT WILL Expand, and Lock UP the Rear Brake ! IF you haveing trouble with the Rear, you might Remove the Line between Rear Caliper and the Resovoiur, and blow out the line, it might be plugged. As long as your working on it, I strongly suggest you Remove the Rear Caliper, and Replace the Pads. The REAR, ususlly WEARS on One PAD, much more then the other Pad !! Best to Replace the Pads. -
A very small leak, thats dripping on A HOT Spot, and evaporating, causeing a big stink !!! Dimes to doughnuts, it will stop leaking after some hard runs. Might take a few weeks, though. Bye then you will have forgotten about it !!!

Need a bit of help
GeorgeS replied to Jason's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Did this thread get hi jacked ???? OK as to the smoke, do I have this correct?? It was NOT Smoking BEFORE, you changed the Spark Plugs, Is that correct ---- -
Ok, You recently bought this bike. It Only has 15,000 miles on it. Thats almost Just broken in !! ( I'm not jokeing here ) So, this particular 89 Venture has just been sitting around for that last 20 Years !!!!! Gaskets get old, Rubber O-Rings, get hard. etc etc etc. My suggestion at this point, is put it all back together and Go for a Ride, About 100 miles or more on Sat. and Sunday, for the next 4 Weeks. Then Re-Evaluate the situation Also, It does not have enough Miles on it yet to have Run Up, against All of the Known Problems with these bikes. I have a list , if your interested. Under that Rear Cover, left side, there are a couple, Items that leak oil. the Shift Shaft O-Ring is one of them. ( where the shaft goes Into the Case ) Also, there is the Shift Position Indicator Switch, located close to the Clutch Slave Cylinder. This Switch has a gasket, that might be leaking oil. Also, the Lower Allen head Bolt, holding the Rear, Left Side cover, has a Brass O-Ring, That might be crushed, If so, Oil can leak out of the bottom of rear cover, because that Bolt, is Actualy an Oil Drain for the Rear Section of the Crank Case. ( Replace the Brass Crush Washer , just to be sure its good ) ( Replace the Rear Case Cover Gasket Also ) I have leaks under my Left Side, rear Case, have never been able to fix, So I just don't worry about it anymore. Another source of Leaking Oil, is the Drive Shaft Seal, on the Pumpkin. IF, it goes bad, the SAE-90 Oil In pumpkin will get into the Drive Shaft, houseing, run forward, and Leak out a Drain Hole, in the Rubber Boot that covers the U-Joint of the Drive shaft. This oil will Drip on the HOT Exhaust sytem. ( I don't think this is your problem, but something to check for ) Anyway, Take the thing out and drive IT HARD, for a few hundred miles, and see what happens. If its Sunny next Sunday, drop me a message, We can go rideing !!!

As long as I'm in there....
GeorgeS replied to Flyinfool's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Good time to replace the Clutch slave Cylinder, if its never been re-built or replaced. You might consider removeing the Starter, Dissassemble it, Clean it, and might need a new set of brushes. A new High Output Alternator, might be a nice Addition . Just a few thoughts, seeing as how you asked. -
Also, due to all of the Changes in the Real Estate Market, ( Nation Wide ) I think I would want to obtain a " Current " Appraisal of the Property. Most likley you will have to re-finance. You want to know what its worth, today, not 3 years ago. Things have changed drasticly.

Well about $50 to $60 would be the lowest quality I would buy. The highest quality professiona graded can run up to about $200.00 Depends on what you want to Spend. Check FRY'S Electronics On line. You will at least find some Ref: points there as to cost. If you have a local Radio Shack, they carry a fair selection of them. Also check Lowes, or Home depot, tool dept.
