GeorgeS replied to timgray's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Pull up web site for any Yamaha dealer, find parts section, ( the Ill parts catalog ) and you can order any part for any yamaha vehical, " On Line " For that pipe, be sure to order new " O-Rings " also. I remember replacing mine, I used 2 O-Rings, and Sealant, it never leaked again ! -
Barnett Clutch, Question??
GeorgeS replied to GeorgeS's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Thanks for the info -
Question: on 08 RSTD, Can you just use a Barnett Pressure Plate unit, and leave the original OEM Clutch plates in place. OR: Do you have to also use the Barnett set of new clutch plates ??? As I recall, on a 1st Gen you could just replace the pressure plate with the new Barnett unit. Not sure on 2nd gens ?? I ride Solo, no trailer, etc etc, :confused24:

I know we have a few members here, that are also " Ham Radio Ops " !! At least I recall noticing a couple of call signs, here and there, now and then over the last few years. Anyway, I've been doing the ham radio hobby for about 50 years, and decided to try to include that hobby with the motorcycleing hobby. Not a big deal, just something I decided to try, just to see if I could make it work. --- My Ham Radio, Call sign is, K7RTF If your not into Ham Radio, skip the rest of this, as it will be of no interest to you. If your a Ham radio op, well---- You " might " be interested. So, after about 18 months of struggling, and re-working the equipment, and installation on the 1st Gen ( now sold ) and the new bike, ( 08 RSTD ) and moving from the first Icom " IC-7000 " Transciever,:depressed: ((did not work on motorcycles )) to different Kenwood TS-480 HX, transciever. !!:cool10: (( It does work on motorcycles !! ) I finally, got it all working :whistling::whistling: ( Well, it seems to be anyway ) So: I now, am fully operational, on 40 Meters, 20Meters, 17Meters, 15Meters, and 10Meters, ( and of course the CB band ) with a Kenwood TS-480HX 200 Watt HF transciever, ( I know, cut power to 5 Watts on the CB band !! ) Also, have installed, an Icom VHF/UHF Transciever the, IC-2720 model radio. (( Icom 2720, Works great, for most , VHF/UHF repeaters within 30 to 50 mile range, especially on west coast, lots of repeaters on high mountain tops out here on the west coast !! )) Also, have the Jensen, AM/FM, Industrial radio installed. in the Tank Bag, with the Ham Radio, control heads. Three control heads, in Tank bag, and the Two T/R Units mounted in Travel bag, at the passenger positon ( Seat removed, replaced with luggage Rack ) I have Two, HF Antenna mounts on rear, ( selectable with push of button on TS-480HX control head ) and VHF/UHF Comet Antenna, up front. FM Radio Antenna, is built into the Tank Bag, a simple 26 inch wire, snaked thru the tank bag perimiter. ( works good for FM Stations ) Not worrying about the AM radio stations. ( However, the TS-480 covers AM Radio band, if needed ) Also, the Jensen Radio, takes an " Aux " input, for MP-3 Player. So Far, the two AGM Batteries, seem able to handle the Power Draw, for about 30 Min. of operating , time. ( about 12 to 15 min. transmitt time ) And still Crank the engine with no problem. I have been testing this with bike in drive way, to see if batteries can handle, about 1/2 hour of operating time on an HF Band, at 200 Watts. So far, So Good !! The HF Transmitter, is adjustable from 5 to 200 Watts of output. The VHF Transmitter is 50W VHF, and 35W UHF. Also, useing an " Unbalanced to Unbalanced" Balun, in line with right side #1 Antenna for 40M and 20M. ( located under TIP, of rear Fender not visable in photo. ) ( A commercial built unit ) I will be replaceing the Odyessy, 7 year old battery in Saddle bag, soon with a new DEKA, but will have to rebuild the Battery Box, for larger size battery. A few photo's included, Any hams out there interested, PM me if you want to discuss this installation. The antennas. are all Home Brew, the antenna mounts, are CB mounts from Radio Shack, with a little extra Aluminum Stock material, and Standard hardware. The antenna's all come apart, and fit into the Saddle bag, when not in use ! I simply switch the Coils, and the TOP, TIP section. All Antenna parts. are " Home Brew " Coils wound with #12, or #10 wire. Over night, the Travel Bag, and Tank bag, are quickly removable, so do not have to leave expensive Radio Equipment, sitting in a Motel Parking lot.

I decided I need a bit more storage space, on the new 08 ( well almost new ) RSTD. So last week, I spent about $100 bucks for supplies, and went to work, while the Seattle Rain, was pouring down all week. Well, looking at the bike I realized there was " Unused Space " located under the luggage rack mounted to the sissy bar. ( Stock yamaha accessory ) I do not claim to be the best sheet metal fabricator around the block, but it came out pretty good, ( if I do say so myself ) And, it works. I started with some foam flower pot material, to create a mold, to fit the avialable space on the bike. Then cut sheet metal, and built the trunk useing 3/8 angle aluminum , and a lot of " pop rivits " . Then finished it off with Auto body, bondo, and a lot of Dupli-Color paint. Anyway, if you need something like this, I'm sure there are fabricators out there that can do a much better job of it, ( maby with all fiberglass, or, carbon fiber, material ) but, hey, this works for me. Anyway some photo's included here, any and all critisisum is welcomed !!! :whistling:

Well, best look for some " higher ground " as they say, for a replacement place to live !! At least you don't have to repair the building !! Maby look into " Renters Insurance " I have been hearing a lot of advertising for that type of insurance latly . Hmmm ?? Sorry about the loss, but at least you can walk away from a Rental.

Keep the venture or move on??? Please give honest feedback...

Sign up at the local gym. I did , big help, even at 70, years old -
Amazing to me how none of the Media commentators want to talk about the most obvious source of " Terrorist Attacks " !! Been listioning to everything since the event, amazing, nobody will touch the obvious !!

Well, lets see?? No jobs, not much money, in most case's a motorcycle is at the bottom of the list on most peoples budget, planning. Here in Seattle, the roads are clogged with Cheap, Cars, I think even Ford, and Chevy are under the gun as far as sales. Korean cars, seem to be selling the most cars around here. Lowest price, rules the day.

We are not worried, you will be back, sooner or later !!! :whistling:

Well I have installed 3 of them, about $130.00 each over the years, however, they all went about 20,000 miles, So, when you consider the extra miles over other brands, how much do they really cost ??? Also, one less tire change, because of the extra milage. !! Also, I have never had an " on the road " flat tire useing the Dunlop E-3. Of course, I do use " Ride - On " in all my tires. ???

Right cylinders didn't fire up.
GeorgeS replied to Smilerider's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
How long since fuel filter has been replaced ?? Maby also time for that. Might be some crude the tank, maby good idea to drain tank, and pull out the fuel petcock, and clean the screens. I have not done this on a 2nd gen, but its fairly easy to do on the 1st gens. I would also consider, getting to the Large , Plug , on the Ignition Unit, and pull it out, and give it a cleaning with Electrical contact cleaner. -

GeorgeS replied to Smilerider's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Each Carb has a Drain hose, a #2 head screw to open drains. Drain them one at a time. I also suggest you Completly Drain the Tank, and Use that fuel for our lawnmower !! New gas, and add a can of Sea-Foam or Techraline. Drive Motorcycle !!! Maby use another can of additive on the next two tanks, Actually just use 1/2 can of additive, per fill up. Maby a new set of plugs is called for, I would also want to pull the plugs, and take a look at them after a couple hundred miles. -
Where would you start?
GeorgeS replied to Godlover's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
As " Condor " said, Red Switch, is a common problem. Did you check for Loose battery terminal connections ?? Check all the fuse's !! There are lots of fuse's, !! Get the book out, to find them. -
Most likley the Ignition switch, or maby loose battery cable. Check fuse's of course. Take a look at Main Fuses, first. Pull tank, open the two plugs from the Ignition switch, and do a resistance check thru the On - Off contacts. Bad contacts in the switch are very common. There is a fix for this, but it takes some work, or a new switch
-
I would tell him to get it fixed, then give you a call --------- And show you the dealer receipt for the repair when you get there. Its probably, not much, But!!! It might be a Big Deal !!! Don't risk it !!!
-
Looks to me like a whole new set of problems :whistling: And, with that trailer, lets see ?? how many gallons of " shine " will you be able to haul around on the Ga. backroads ???? :no-no-no:
-
IF, its a freez plug, there should be some Green Fluid, on the Garage Floor !! This would confirm, that theory.
-
Well, I was going to say, just take you glasse's " Off " But I guess you figured it out allready ??? Life is just too complicated !!

Where would you start?
GeorgeS replied to Godlover's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Be sure to do continuity check of the Main Ignition Switch. Pull tank, two 6 inche pigtails comeing from the Ignition Switch. Open plugs, and do continuity check thru the two sets of contacts in the ignition switch. Failed ignition Switch, " on , off " contacts are common. -
OK, thanks, well in that case, I guess I would have to " extend " the existing cable, by spliceing in extra length of wires. Was looking at it, last month, sure would not want to have to work on it out on the road. looks like its really buried down there.
-
Whenever you " add " anything, its always best to install a seperate fuse. At least, an " In Line " fuse in the + line to the new item. Its easy, and you can get them most any auto parts store, if you don't have one. ( or radio shack of course )

I got an E-mail today claiming I had an IRS Refund due. Hmmmm Another SCAM, if IRS wants to communicate with you, you will get a letter in the mail from them. I have allready filed, tax, and got my refund from IRS. So this is another type of Scam . Don't fall for this one

On an 08 RSTD, ( or all 2ng gens ) the TCI is mounted under the battery to the lower part of the frame, OK, my question is, after you remove the Large Plug, is there any " Excess " cable run avialable ??? I'm thinking about Moveing the TCI to a more accessable place on the bike. ( as yet to be determined ! ) Anyway, has anybody done this,?? and if so, where did you move it to on the bike, and how did you handle lengthing the cable to reach the New Location ??? I'm fishing for information here ??? Any comments appreciated, :detective:

OK, question: I have a good , spare fuel pump from my 89 ( 1st gen, now sold ) . Am wondering if it will work as a Spare, for the new 08 2nd gen bike. ?? OK, 2nd gen P/N is 4NK-13907-00-00 and I went to the parts fitch, for 1st gen bikes, and the Fuel Pump, is no longer listed ??? Interesting, ??? Anyway, has anybody used a 1st Gen Fuel Pump, on a 2nd gen bike?? No big deal, just wondering if I should carry the extra pump as an " On the Road " Spare, just in case its needed ?? Any thoughs on this will be appreciated, :detective: Been " Raining " in Seattle for 3 days now !!!! :confused24::confused24::depressed::depressed:
