Oil leak thoughts
GeorgeS replied to Wrongway's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Could be Either front or rear case cover on left side. New Set of Gaskets, and couple hours of work. -
Cut the Sensor Off, and Splice In a 2200 ohm 1 Watt resistor, Cover it with Shrink Tubeing, an Connect the New Resistor to the BR wire at the Fuse Block. So it get voltage when Ign. is in the ON position. Do Not connect the Wire Directly to 12 volts, that will Damage your instrument panel . The Resistor drops the voltage to the sensing circuit down to about 3 to 4 volts.

It has 6 wires going thru it. This has been a very common trouble point. If you have to pull the TCI out, its a bigger job. #3 allen head Screws from botom of the TCI, Very Limited Access to the Screws. Usually you have to Pull the Battery Box, and Air Cleaner Box to get them out. But that does not mean is can't be done without pullin the box's. If you have to pull the TCI, take top cover OFF, and put in Oven at about 105 to 110 Degres F. for about 2 hours, to dry out the Moisture, On Reassembly be sure to Seal it up. also Check to See if your Cables to the TCI are Long Enough to reach, the top of Air Cleaner Cover. Lot of folks Relocate the tCI to the Top of the Air Cleaner, for Easy ACCess.

Fill tank to within 2 inchs of top, it might float up to the fill hole. if it hasen't disolved by now. Well, its worth a try

I have owned 3 of the Sealed lead Acid batteries in the last 4 years Two Yuasa, and one other brand, The all went south in less then two years. I pryed the Seal off all three of them, after the would no longer stay charged, and the Water level was BELOW the plates !!! ??? Anyway, Never again.

engine tapping question
GeorgeS replied to a topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Well, it cant hurt anything to try 20w 50W heavier wgt Oil. I use the 20 50 Mobil I if I can find it. Or try Castrol 20 W 50W, if you don't like Synthetic Oil- 15 replies

Irregardless of the cement floor issue: Irregardless of the tender hooked up or not: You Must Keep the water level over the plates by adding Distilled water. Water Evaporates, thats just a fact of life !! Check the level every 30 daysl. Or pay the price !!

Also, if you are concerned about " shorts " on the trailer, You could put " In - line " fuses, In the power leads going to each of the circuits going to the trailer. I would estimate a 2 1/2 amp to about 5 amp fuse, would do it. The lower amperage fuse would blow before the main fuse of the bikes main supply to the lighting circuit. --- this would act as a short of double back up in the event of a short circuit somplace on the trailer.

Engine vibration

Run at the same RPM in forth gear, lower speed, see what happens. My bet would be tire balance. -

With bike on Center Stand, sit on bik, weight on back wheel. Now from center, just start the handlbar, left and right from center position. The wheel should go to the " stops " with some friction. If it " Flops " to the Stops, then you need to add little Torque to the Steering Head Nut. As a rule of thumb, you might have to Tighten the Steering Head Nut about 2 to 5 degrees, of CW rotation. If you don't understand how this is done, I would call somebody to discuss the proceedure. My 89 had the same problem, about 5 degrees or CW rotation on the large nut cured the problem.

Defensive Driveing !!! Remember, the First 6 months on the road is just a continuation of the Training course. Make every trip a learning experience, its a cruel world out there, and no quarter is given !!
-
Just fix the Dash in #1, or swap it from #2 before the trip.

If you make the Antenna " Longer" the Resonant Frequency, of the antenna, Goes Lower. If you make the Antenna " Shorter" the Resonant Frequency of the anetnna Goes Higher. To get a Low SWR, basicly what you are doing is Adjusting the Length of the antenna, so it is Resonant at the Frequency you are useing. Which is About 27.2 Megahertz, about the Center of the CB Frequency Band. The Cap, being discussed Used by Fire Stik, on their Antenna's Does affect the " Resonant " length of their Antenna's. I noticed this when tuneing my new firestik. I Re Read their Instructions, and it does say, that the Cap Affects the SWR. So you have to make the adjustment, then reinstall the Cap before takeing a reading on the SWR Meter with the new Adjustment.

Yes , you can do that. Also, the amp is never drawing full power except when music is hitting high volume peaks. The average power draw, is probably only about 20 percent of the full amplifer wattage rateing. Also, if you were useing an Odyessy PC-680 Dry cell, deep cycle battery, I doubt there would be a problem.

Jack, If I understand him correctly, he is saying that with + cable disconected from battery, and then reading resistance from + cable to ground he is seeing 47,000 ohms. Which is a High Resistance short to ground, with the Ing. SWitch Off. If, so this would drain the battery. --- I asked him to remove all fuses, and then check for the high Res. short. he claimes he allready did that. --- I suspect sombody has added some accesories to the bike, which may not be fused. --- Possibly he has a wire shorting, ( worn thru ) to the frame somplace. ---- With all fuse's remove, the Solinoid is still hooked to battery, and thru the solinoid actuator coil, and then to the Start Cut off relay, and then to the Start Switch. There might still be a problem in this circuit, because its not fused. Anyway, if you have any ideas. One more thing, he said he has a new battery, he mentioned charging it with a Trickel charger, now I am wondering if this new battery has ever been Initially charged at 3 to 4 amps for several hours. ??? Or, is the fluid level correct, and bring to full charge, maby thats not been done.
-
See Circuit from battery, goes thru solinoid, to the start cut off relay, and from there to the start switch. ---- this part of circuit, is With the Ignition OFF. ----- Pull the L/W ( blue / white ) wire at solinoid, and read resistanc thru the cut off relay and start switch to ground. you might see the 47K here. Its also, possible, there is Carbon build up on the Main contacts in the Start solinoid, makeing a high resistance circuit thru the starter motor.

On my 89, Removed Pos. battery cable, measured resistance of main cable to ground, and Accessory cable that goes to the main 40 Amp Fuse. ---- Resistance reading is Infinate, on my Ohm meter, ( digital ) No connection to ground. Check. Are there ANY AFTERMARKET ACCESORIES INSTALLED ON THE BIKE, REMOVE FUSE TO ANY OF THIS STUFF!!! Horns, Extra running lights, trailer light system, WHATEVER IT IS, ESPECIALLY, IF NO FUSE HAS BEEN INSTALLED FOR THE NEW STUFF!!! DISCONNECT THE WIREING TO ANYTHING THAT HAS BEEN ADDED TO THE BIKE !!!!! Has anybody added a radio, CB Stero amp, Anything!! disconnect it !!!!!! THEN----- Now Recheck for the 47K resistance. If its still there, then----- Remove all the STOCK FACTORY fuse's in the fuse holder, take resistance reading. Does it change ?? If, its Infinate now, ( Open ) start reinstalling fuse's one at a time, untill you see your 47K of resistance. Now troubleshoot that circuit. If Not, open up the Main fuse holder, remove fuse, take reading from the fuse output to the fuse block. It should be Infinate. Now with battery installed, and all fuses removed ( includeing the main fuse ) your battery is still connected to the Start Solinoid !! And the Start cut off relay and to the Start Switch, One of these three Items might have the 47K Resistance to ground. --- NEXT REMOVE IN ORDER OF 1. cable to start switch. ---------------------------------2. Start cut off Relay ----------------------------------3. Heavy battery cable to Start Solinoid. However haveing said all this, I suspect some added accessories are the culprit.

1900 Hours, standby, I will go measure the resistance on mine

Well Jack, the power draw would be about the same as low beam head light. Or less then a set of driveing lights. I'm going to look into this, very interesting piece of equipment.

Now haveing said all, that. I'm not against useing Existing Waste products that are allready avialable to make Ethonol, to put them go good use. !!! Where ever possible. And useing that fuel for Specially designed vehicals, public transit and the like. Or In-Place power plants. etc. etc. Also, the Corn Stalks are not a Waste product, They are generally plowed under to keep the soil rich. Its fertilizer for next years crop!!!

Ok, well, thats still 2 1/2 gallons of fuel being burned, to get the equal of 9/10th of a gallon of gas. Also, Those acres of the " Best Farm Land in the World" , could be used to grow human food. Also, If one were to grow " Hemp" , ( which is not the stuff some folks smoke ) you would get 6 to 10 time's the Tonnage per acre of material to turn into Fuel. I grew up on a Corn Farm in Minn. I know what it cost to produce the stuff. And frankly we need more Steak, and pork chops and other food for the folks around the world. A much better use for the Corn. I know this cause I used to raise Beef, and Pork. We raised, corn, soy beans, wheat, oats. sweet corn, peas, alfalfa, on that wonderful black southern Minn. soil. Sorry, you will never convince me that wasting that great black Soil in Minn. Iowa and IL. should be wasted to make Ethonal. One more thing, burning the 1 1/2 gallon of oil to make a gallon of Ethonal, !! Thats polution going into the atmospher Also, Don't forget that . Brazil , yes, they do it with Sugar Cane, They are in a totaly different Climate. Much more tonnage per acre. You can't grow the stuff in Iowa. But, you can grow Hemp there. They did it in Minn during WW II. for the war effort. Very few folks can remember that. Now I will admit, that in area's in the U.S. that have poor soil, you can produce great tonnage per acre of Suger Beets. This is probably fairly close to what Brazil is doing. Maby you are right about the growing new Industry, but in the end, I think the Carbon Footprint will be about the same as Oil. However, It would gain us energy independance. Your correct on that point.

Lets See, how much Oil Does Not get burned if we use Ethonol ?? 1. Oil has to be hauled and refined to build John Deer tractors etc etc. 2. John Deer tractors have to burn diesel to plow the fields, plant the corn, and harvest the corn. Fertilizer, and other things have to be manufactured, and hauled to the fields, to grow the corn 3. The Corn has to be hauled by trucks ( burnining diesel fuel ) to the Ethonal plant. 4. the Ethonol plant has to the burn fuel to turn the corn into ethonol. 5. the Ethonol has to be hauled by trucks and trains to the distribution points. 6. Your car gets 10 percent less milage burning the stuff, So I guess my question is, Whats the point to all this ?? Is there More or Less Oil being burned or polution being created in total ?? Maby there is less polution in Calif. but how about the polution in Iowa caused by makeing the ethonol ?? And then you might consider that all that good Fertile farm land in Iowa could be put to better use by growing food for the supposed " starveing mass's " of the world.
