As you all know our plug caps have a Resistor installed in them, ( 5000 ohms or so ) in addition to the " Resistor Spark Plugs " Is this extra resistance, really needed ?? Well I guess thats debatable Anyway, for what its worth, if anybody, is interested, I've been working on the old 82 CX-500C that Resides, in MY Garage. (( Over in the Corner ! )) Carb rebuild, Tune up, etc etc. Anyway, I decided to replace the plug wires due to Age, ( 60K on the bike ) . Checking resistance on right side, plug cap, --- found that it was OPEN Circuit, pulled it apart, removed resistor, and it was OK, ( 5000 ohms ) but up in the top of the cap, the Connection was burned off an OPEN CIRCUIT. So, it was fireing the plug, but Arching Across an open circuit. OK, on the CX-500 web site, found a good idea, Replace the Resistor with a chunk of 1/8 diameter brass rod. !!! So the old CX plug cap went into the trash, and took an old spare left over from the 89 ( now sold ) and pulled out the Resistor, and installed a chunk of brass rod, and installed on the CX-500. Did this on both sides, and put in a new set of Resistor plugs, Runs Great, Now have 5 k of resistance, instead of 10k as in the stock set up. So: If you want, you can do this to your Venture Plug caps. Easy to do. Is this a good thing to do ??? not sure, -- but --- if you want to do it, its easy to do. just get a chunk of 1/8 brass rod at the hardware store.

Sounds like the switch is going bad, this is a common problem. I think there have been some posting with photo's on how to dissemble and repair it. But I'm no sure on that, you might be looking at a new switch . Also, there is a wireing Mod, to bypass the contacts, untill you get it repaired, Check maintenance section for the write up, with photo's

Well I have a spare from my 89 ( now sold ) Just wondering if I should keep it for a spare ( just in case ) or sell it. Thanks, for info, I'm going to keep it to have a spare on hand, just in case .

I been working on my son's old 82 Honda CX-500 for the last couple of weeks, Mounted a Solo seat, and luggage rack at the passenger position. Fork oil change and a few repairs up front. But the big deal, was Overhauling the Carbs. Anyway, got it running Much Better !! It was, running really Bad !! Dirty Carbs !! Sea-Foam did not do the trick. Pulled them apart, twice, However still have a problem. On accelleration in 3rd gear, pulling thru about 5500 to 6500 RPM the engine is still " Stalling a bit " Pretty sure I do not have any Intake, Leaks. Any experts here on Honda CX-500 Carbs ?? If so, I'm all ears :depressed:

Was wondering, will a 1st Gen Starter work on a 2nd gen engine?? Are they , the same ?? Well I guess I could look up the part numbers Hmmmm Any comments ?

Did you try the dry out proceedure on your TCI, and resolder the connections to the circuit board ?

Won't crank...see symptoms below

Pull the starter, Clean the armateure, Inspect to Solder joint where the 6MM stud is going thru the insulator, ( Stud might be twisted loose, ) It is only Soldered in place. Inspect the lead pig tails to the Brushes, As I recall they are Soldered in position, you might have to re-solder them One more comment, Very few of these starters have actually failed, you apparently have a rare failure event, here. Be sure to Inspect the bolt hole on the ONE mount bolt, clean the threads with a tap, on re-assembly make sure you have a good ground connection at that hole, Be sure to RE-Solder the Stud on end of red bat cable at the Starter. -
Try this--- Pull out the Rear Caliper unit. Inspect the Brake pads, if worn, get new ones, Did you, or whoever worked on it use Brake Pad Adhisive, last time new pads were installed. ?? ( do you know what I'm talking about here ??? ) If not, the Pads, Can make a clicking sound. IF this is what is happening, its not big deal, just live with it untill next time you pull off the caliper. I had this happen on the front brakes of my old 89, ( clicking sound ) once when I " stupidly " forgot to use the Sticky Stuff, when replaceing the front pads, ( I think that forgetfullness is a symptom of getting old ) Anyway, pull out your rear pads, and re-install with the brake pad sticky stuff, avialable at ANY Local Autoparts store !!

starter idler gear
GeorgeS replied to jwox's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Yes, starter Engage Clutch, is common problem. But if this bike has the Loud clanking noise on " Start Attempt " then I'm pretty sure it needs the Engage clutch repaired. I have never heard of one of the " Idler Gears " going bad. ( small ones that is ) The large 72 tooth gear, YES, but thats usually a result of the Engage Clutch assembly failing, and causing the 72 tooth gear to be damaged. Dimes to Dougnuts, this bike need the " Engage Clutch " Rebuilt !! Stay Tuned !! -
Wont start when hot

starter idler gear
GeorgeS replied to jwox's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
be sure to find the job write up in the maintnance section , scroll down left side of home page, and get to that section. This is a VERY Common problem on these bikes. Lots of us have done this job, so there will be plenty of help. -
starter idler gear
GeorgeS replied to jwox's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
It probably has the Loud Noise, from the -----" Starter engage Clutch " ---- Most likley. -- See Service Manuel, on this web site, for the details on the Starter engage Clutch -- Yes, this is a Nasty Job. About 150 bucks worth of parts, and you have to pull the Stator Rotor. Check the maintenance section on this web site, there is a complete breakdown of the job with photo's. If your a fair mechanic, with tools, its not to bad, If you don't know what a screwdriver is, I would strongly advise against trying this job youself. You will be paying a dealer to do it . -
Does the Frequency of the clicking, change with the Speed of rotation of the rear wheel ??? My old, 89 started dong this at about 18,000 miles. If so, pull off rear wheel, and do a real good clean up and greese job on the Wheel Hub, drive gears. In maintenance section there is complete information and photo's of this job. Easy to do. once you have the wheel Off. This is a Very Common problem on these bikes, Also, when you have the wheel off, pull the drive box, and pull out the Drive shaft and hand Greese the splines on both ends of the drive shaft. If its never been done on your bike, you can be sure it needs to be done !!!

Possibly an connector has pulled loose. If any wires worn thru, there should be at least one blown fuse !! Are you sure you checked them all ??

A nice afternoon ride in Brazil, complete with " Helmet Cam " to record all the " Events of the Day " [ame=http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=06f_1381668990]LiveLeak.com - Brazil, full video.Thief shot trying to steal motorcycle.[/ame] :shock3:

Why not find the fuse, that feeds that circuit. Should be simple enough. Then install a Switch to kill power to whatever is drawing current. Turn Switch " OFF " when you park the bike. OR--- just rewire the fuse for that circuit to a point which has NO power when the key is turned OFF. Again, should be simple enough.

One of each !!! A Venture, and a Hayabusa :whistling: !!

Under the current economic " mess " lots of " TOY'S " are comeing up for sale. Why not just look for a good deal on a 2 to 4 year old Venture, with Under 10,000 miles on it. ( Its still as good as new !! ) And most likley, it allready has Dunlop tires installed, and Barnett Clutch, and various other aftermarket goodies, ( and maby even a " Russell Day Long " seat ) for half the price of any New Bike ( thats my story, and I'm sticking to it ) Oh, if-- your bent on spending another 20K, or so, check out the New " Indian " (( after you sell the Harley, of course ))
-
I seem to recall, that the parts, simply do not physically fit on top of the Venture, engine. But if you are handy with a welder, etc. etc. then modification can be made to make the stuff fit. But as I recall, it has been done !! ( find that guy, and talk to him ) Also, you will need a " Barnett Clutch " to handle the extra power. RE-jetting ??? well you won't know that untill the project is done, and you get into test driveing, and tuneing, Syncing ?? and things like that. Most likley you would be " Re Jetting " !!!

No fuel from drain
GeorgeS replied to mralex714's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Hmmm, 4 seperate bowls, 4 seperate valves, 4 seperate drain hose's !! and all 4 or them are plugged ??? Crazy!!! First thing I would do, is, completly " Drain " the fuel tank, at the petcock !! Clean out the fuel tank, replace the fuel filter !! ( if its been a long time since thats been done ) then start with fresh fuel and a heavy dose of Sea - foam. Also logic would dictate that you are going to have to pull the carbs, and clean out the bowls manualy, at some point. -
center stand problems
GeorgeS replied to diversity48's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I did it once a long time ago. I think I used a fairly large needle nose vice grips to hold while stretching it to position. You might find an extra set of hands, to help. -
Was hoping to get a new bike in about 3 years , based on my planned Milage accumulation on my present bike, About 15K per year, about 4 years from now will be looking for a new one. However, with OBC --- penalties --- looming and the IRS staring down the barrell , well not so sure it will be possible. ( new bike that is ) Lets see? 2014 -- $95 per adult or 1 percent --------- 2015 -- $325.00 per adult or 2 percent --------- 2016 -- $695.00 per adult or 2.5 percent of houshold income. Also, 1/2 that amount for each Child you have ( I know we are all " Old Guys" here, so not to worry about that ) Yes, I know, I'm 70 yrs, old and on Medicare, But---- IF?? I was only 55 or so ???? Depending on your circumstances this could effect your ability to buy a new motorcycle :whistling: , maby even new tires for the " Old motorcycle " ?? :whistling:

that I started this. I just thought some member in Ala. might be interested in buying the guys motorcycle, if he has to sell it ?? Hmmm Bye the way, be sure to vote next year in the mid term--- might be a good idea??
