Went for an hour ride on the Busa yesterday. Stopped out at my son's place for an hour, and guess what? It started raining ( pouring is more like it ) . Anyway, decided to run the 10 miles home in the rain, as dinner would soon be ready, ( my wife is a great cook!! ) So, this was my first good " rain rideing " test of my new set of Bridgestone, BT- 020 tires, ( front and rear ) installed a this summer. These tires are advertised as general usage for sport bikes, not for extreme performance. Longer lasting, as Bridgestone claims. Anyway, I was Extremely impressed as to how these tires performed in the extreme rain conditions. I tried a few manuvers and did not note any slippage, or slideing under the extreme rain condx. Traffic was going normal speed even with the extreme rain. These tires are not made in size's for touring bikes, however if you ride a sport bike, and do a lot of rain driveing in your area. This information may be of interest. I am also very satisfied with my new Avon's on the 89 Venture . I ran about 200 miles on I-5 last month in heavy rain, and no complaints as to rain driveing qualities of the Avon Venoms.

Has anyone here turned a first gen Venture into a Royal Star?
GeorgeS replied to a topic in General Tech Talk
It would be much eaiser to just find a good used V-Max. Get the 83 running, sell it, put the money from that towards the V. After its all done, you will probably spend about the same amount of money. -
I would check both ends of both battery cables. Two at battery, one at starter, and one where the Neg Cable hooks to main ground point near Rt. Fwd Corner of the engine. Also, find the 40 Amp main fuse, ( its a strange looking device ) ( on the 1st gen, its just left of battery, but don't now exact location on the 2nd gens ) , it has #12 Red wireS into and out of it. Open up this little beast, and check for two small #1 phillips screws, they might be loose. Also, find your Starter " Solinoid " , make sure the Nuts holding the wires in place are tight. and not corroded. Haveing said all this: you " might " have a " start solinoid " that is close to failing. Also, as the former fellow said, the battery might be failing Internally. How "OLD " is your battery ?? If its over 3 years old, ???? But

I bought one of these tools about 8 years ago. Use it on car brakes, and both bikes. The thing is Great, best money I ever spent on a tool.

TCI-Bench Test Cable needed
GeorgeS replied to DonB's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Watch e-bay for a wireing harness for 1st gen. I got one about 3 years ago, and it comes in handy for extra parts, plugs, etc etc. Also you can use for finding position of plugs, and wire routeing. etc. it really comes in handy. I think I paid about $20 for it. -
To replace cables, You have to remove the left side upper fairing, only way to get to the cable joint as shown in the above photos, from the manual. I did mine about 6 months ago, the 4 new cables were about $40.00. Most of the job is getting the fairing removed, and re installed.

Ignition problem need help
GeorgeS replied to cliffno350's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Check the resistance thru the 40 amp main fuse ( open it and tighten the two small allen head screws ) Check the resistance thru the Ing Switch , On - OFF contacts. Check the resistance thru the Engine Kill Switch on rt. handle bar. Pull pig tails from the coils, make sure there is 12 volts on each R/W wire, at the coil. Clean the 2 pin plugs going to each Coil. ( I think they are yellow ) Use Electrical contact Cleaner, and give the Ing. Switch and the Kill switch a bath, and blow out with compressed air. I assume it was running OK, when you parked it ??? IF so, try 1/2 can of Sea Foam in the gas. Its worth a try. -
My brother in law bought a new 07. He installed an Oil Temp Gauge. Results: Oil temp running at 268 deg F. In Los Angeles area, in the summer. He installed an Oil Cooler, and a few other things, to get it down to about 210 deg F.

Leaking where the large 1 inch plastic goes into the water pump is common. I used new O-Rings here, and Sealant. Another point, I overtorqued the two bolts on the Thermostate cover, and Distorted it. So it would not seal with new gaskets and O-Rings. Be careful, the thing is made of PVC material, and is easy to distort the shape if bolts are overtorqued. Also the Tube comeing down out of center of Radiator is ONLY Press Fit into place. Its common for this to start leaking after serviceing. That little " Valve " under center of Radiator, be sure to put New O-rings in that. This is not a fun job, Order all the O-Rings and gaskets, new thermo, and also do the hose's in front. I reccomend doing everything so you don't have to go back again in couple of years.

brake bleeding tip
GeorgeS replied to TxVenture's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I use the Myti vac bleeding tool, pump thru with vaccum, the do the standard method, and alternate betweent the two. So far has always worked. But I still don't understand why bleeding brakes and clutch on the Venture is such a problem compared to any other vehical I have done brakes on. ??? Seems to be a mystry, and everybody seems to have the same problem. -
I put in progressive springs, last December. I decided to put in 15 Wgt fork oil. Works OK, however next time I change I will go back to 10Wgt. The 15 seems a little to stiff.
-
Its a special Oil, comes in 5, 10, and 15 wgt. You should change it about every 3 years. Maby less depending on milage. Some people never change it. Every time I drain mine it looks, black and bad !!! Take good care of your Front Suspension, your life depends on it !!!

Clutch slipping in 3rd
GeorgeS replied to Monsta's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
My bike is an 89. Changed the plate set, and pressure plate asssembly. Did not have to change the basket, at least on the 1st Gen. I don't know, about Barnett installation for a 2nd gen. ???? -
Monoshock Linkage problem
GeorgeS replied to a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Take a bunch of photo's of this job, and get them to FreeBird to be posted in the permanent maintenance library. There are a lot of 1st gens that need this job done. I pulled mine about 40K, they came out, but not easy. I also installed the zerk fittings. Makes life a lot eaiser !!! -
Almost 65 now, never been so busy. Worked Aircraft maintenance for 44 years, started in 61, for the Navy. Now its just one thing after another, wife expects me to do everything now that I'm retired, it ain't fair !!!

Clutch slipping in 3rd
GeorgeS replied to Monsta's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Some say just replaceing the springs, will fix it. Some say replace the springs with V-Max Springs, ( I am not sure of the details on this ) some say, the original plates don't wear out, only the springs get weak. Some say, replace the Pressure Plate assembly with the "Barnett Unit " and leave the original plates in use. Some say, replace the entire clutch assembly with the " Barnett, plate set, and Barnett pressure plate assembly. OK, mine started slipping bad, at high speed around 25K, I installed the Entire Barnett plate set, and new pressure plate. 65K now and It Does Not Slip !!! Ref: The Entire Barnett replacement clutch, cost about the same as and entire New OEM replacement. -
Ignition frustration
GeorgeS replied to fixit3546's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Try draining the Tank, Draining the Carb bowl's, put in new gas, and give it a dose of " Valvoline Synthetic Fuel Injector Cleaner " ( about 1/4 of the bottle, with about 2 gallons of gas ) Run about a 1/4 tank of that, then add some " Sea - Foam " -
I need to rebuild my carbs, ist there a complete carb kit available?
GeorgeS replied to helomech's topic in General Tech Talk
Set them all to 2 1/4 turns CCW from fully closed position. Then do the Carb linkage Sync proceedure, Then do a fine tune on the idle mix screws. As you do all this, you will most likley have to make Several readjustments of the Main Idle Speed knob. -
Give it some time and miles, I think you will get used to it. All bikes are different, I think after a couple thousand miles you will feel different about it. Look at it this way, its not better or worse then your past rides, just different.

None of the plugs on the bike are " Sealed " They all have a small " Release clip " on one of the 4 sides. The two halfs will pull appart, to access the male and female connector pins. Measure the AC voltage to ground, on Each of the Three large ( #14 wires ) , with the plug connected. You should read 6 to 15 volts AC on each wire. OR read AC, Wire to wire. What you are looking for is that All Three sets of readings are about the Same. If one wire is substantially lower then the other two then your Stator, HAS Failed. One set of the three windings, is bad. Also, read the voltage on Each side of the plug, on each wire. Is the Voltage same on each side ?? IF NOT, then that set of contacts in the plug is bad. Also, With Engine OFF, and Ign OFF. Read Resistance " Thru " each set of contacts of the large white plug. ((( Should read Zero OHMS ))) If not, open and repair the Plug. OR, cut out the Plug, and Strip, and solder the wires together useing Rosin Core solder. Cover the new solder joints, with 2 or 3 layers of Shrink Tubeing. (((( Not Black Tape ))) ( I know Red Green, use's duct tape, but we don't )

I found this Cross Ref: http://www.jetav8r.com/Vision/TCIRebuild/TCI_Rebuild.html Fuji, ETD41 use --- MJE5742 MJE5740Specs.pdf www.Digi-Key.com Or --- NTE2317, nte2317.pdf Not sure if this is good information. But worth checking into . Also, do Google Search, " NTE2317 " This one apparently is still available, If sombody can find Spec sheet for this one, and the ETD41035, and do a detailed comparison. ?????
