I'm going to replace the FM radio antenna on my '86 VR with a totally different kind of amplified antenna. So, I'm getting rid of one antenna mast. Ok, so the question is when I followed the antenna lead up under the seat and the false tank cover I found the weirdest collaboration of splitters and antenna cables I have ever seen. Does anybody know the reason for the splitter? I would rather just connect it straight to the antenna input at the radio, would that cause any issues?

That one is in my back yard. In fact I rode it on Labor Day, very nice ride. Ended up in Boone, NC to get a little lunch and then took some good back-roads home.

I rode all three days this weekend and I saw more 1st and 2nd Gen Ventures this weekend than I have since I bought mine. It was great to see all of them out there. I also noticed a bunch of Ultra Glides on the road. Now they are a very nice bike and I don't see a thing wrong with owing one, but with that price tag it amazes me how many are out there.

Buying a wrecked bike advice...
elmicko replied to elmicko's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
The part that's making me nervous about the last one I looked at is the lower faring coming off the radiator in front of the driver's feet is busted and I can't find a single set of those for sale online anywhere. -
I'm really wanting to add a 2nd Gen to the stable, but funds are a bit tight. I was looking at a couple bikes online that are wrecked, but appear to only have minor body damage. Mostly busted plastic. Has anyone here took on a project like rebuilding such a bike? I'm just wondering if taking on a project like that would be worth while. Most of the bikes I have seen are going for about half the normal price. What do you guys think?

Dude, you can't be more Vertically Challenged than I am. I just pulled the cover off my seat and shaved about 4" out and then narrowed the sides where you're legs go over. Now I have no problem at all getting both feet flat on the ground. I only have about a 29" inseam. My phone number's on my profile if you have any questions.

You really need to ask yourself a few questions before you decide to buy a warranty. How long do you usually keep a vehicle? If you trade every 3 - 5 years a warranty is a waste of money. Do you always keep some money in reserve in case an unexpected expense comes up? If having to shell out a few hundred dollars for an unexpected repair won't keep you from eating for a while, you don't need to buy the warranty. If you do decide that a warranty is for you, generally the one that is backed by the manufacturer of the vehicle is the safest bet. There are some very good after-market warranty companies that give great service, but there are also a many many more that are almost impossible to get them to pay a claim. Keep in mind too that the guy at the dealership that's running your paperwork for the vehicle purchase gets paid on the sale of the warranty too. That means that you have a lot of negotiation room on the warranty price. Sometimes you can get them for close to half the cost it's originally offered at.

If I had a two tone bike that I really liked the color combination, but wanted to give it a customized look I would look at dividing the two tone with something like Victory did on the Cross Country. It sort of looks like lace between the two colors, but when you look at it, it's actually skulls. Here's a pic. http://www.ultimatemotorcycling.com/files/2010-victory-motorcycles-cross-roads-country%202_0.jpg

I'm 43 and have had my 86 VR for a little over a year now. I was about 6 when I got my first bike and kept one all the time until I was out of college. After I got married, I just didn't have the money or the interest to get a bike for a long time. A buddy talked me into buying his VR so he would have somebody to ride with so after being off of a bike for 20 years, I bought this beast. It's been a hoot and I like working on it almost as much as riding it. Now the wife and I are talking about adding a 2nd Gen to the stable in the near future.

Good luck buddy. I know it's going to be tough, but it'll be worth it in the end. Any time you need to take a ride or just come and hang out in my garage you are more than welcome.

Being Vertically Challenged also, I had the same issue with my 1st Gen. Really couldn't find a good way to lower it so I shaved the padding in the seat down about 4 inches and actually made it more comfortable. One interesting thing I did find in the process was if you narrow the front of the seat where it meets the tank, it will give you a much better stance to get your feet on the ground. The narrowing actually helped more than shaving off the height.

That is actually part of the engineering design to make a 2nd Gen seem faster.:whistling:What??? You knew somebody was going say it.

If there is an ironic or somewhat amusing part of this story is that the guy that crashed was working with one of the motorcycle magazines doing a review of touring bikes. I've got the mag, I think it's Cruiser or Roadbike, but I can't remember. They reviewed an RSV, Ultra Glide, Victory and a Voyager. Theres been a few other threads on here about the review the magazine did. They didn't give details about the crash other than mentioning they crashed the Goldwing in Colorado. It looks like it was a helluva wreck, though.

Just checked the J.C. Whtiney website and a small can is now $14.99. There's a product I've been using for a long time now called Bass Boat Saver and it's the best I've ever used. I started out using it on my bass boat, but when I started learning more about it I started using it on everything. It's an enzyme cleaner and carnuba wax. It makes any painted surface slick, protects from UV rays and cleans fish blood out of carpets. LOL Seriously, check it out everybody I've turned on to it has been very impressed.

Whooo Hoooo!!!!! I'll be there the weekend of Sept 18.

I was reading the Cooling Fan thread in the Watering Hole and it got me to thinking. Of course I never hear my fan come on when I'm on the bike but it never overheats and consistently keeps the needle in the middle of the Green area. Here's the odd part...when I stop and park the bike the fan isn't running when I'm sitting at idle, but it will start running a few seconds after I hit the kill switch. If I leave the key on, it'll go for a minute or two before it turns off. Is this anything close to normal??

Not to take anything away from a Yammie, but I have some friends with 800 size Kawi Vulcans and they are an impressive bike. I wouldn't hesitate for a minute to grab one if I was in the market for that size bike.

The front faring on the old 86 is acting like it's wanting to start cracking on me quiet a bit, so I think I've decided to make it a winter project. I would like to pull all the plastic off the bike, reinforce it somehow and maybe even give the old girl a new coat of paint. I know Plastic Weld is good for repairing cracks, but I really want to beef this thing up so I will never have to fix another crack again. Have any of you folks ever done anything like this? I want to start working on ideas now so I can put her up about the first of December and have her ready to ride by the first of March.

Adding a CD Changer
elmicko replied to MasterGuns's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
On mine the cassette player crapped out so I took it out and made a plate to go in it's place. Mounted a cigarette lighter outlet on the plate and bought a car MP3 player from Amazon for about $15. The MP3 player plugs directly into the cigarette lighter outlet and transmits an FM signal to the radio. It sounds very good and looks nice too because I was able to stick the cassette player cover over it to hide it and protect from rain. -
Very nice ride!!! I can see why you went for it. Goldwings are awesome bikes, but they're too wide for my short little legs. Dang I wish they still made the Valkyrie Interstate.

Why the Resister??
elmicko replied to KarlS's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
When I did the mod on my '86 the resistor was already there. Confused the crap out of me but I just hooked to the battery with what was already there and it's been fine for over a year. -
I carry it. I'm as cheap as anybody, but being under-insured is too dang scary for me.

This may not be what you're looking for, but they are a nice alternative. http://www.kuryakyn.com/index.cfm/go/Home.ProductDetail/catID/10/scID/16/IMID/3881

Just got finished putting a new set of Elite III's on the old 86 and did a good ride to break them in. Man they are a smooth, good handling tire!! One question, how much pressure do I need to run in them? I had Elite II's on it before and I ran the manual specs for two up (35 front / 40 rear). Should I run the Elite III's the same??? Thanks for the input.

Flapping side panel
elmicko replied to Saddle_Bag's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
One of my side panels is missing the rubber thing too. RandyA suggested to try using industrial strength velcro and it worked great. I'm also using it on some of the panels where the tabs have come off. They've held great for about 1500 miles so far.
