Thanks for the input guys. It's looking like swapping in the whole gearset but using the original middle gear is the most promising option. Hopefully the drum and fork are OK. I guess I'll find out soon.

My "84 VR has the dreaded 2nd gear issue that's slowly getting worse. It's to the point that just keeping up with traffic leaving a light will cause it to jump out. It's a sidecar rig and 2nd is really handy to get the tugboat rolling. I just lucked into a trans gearset out of a '89 VR. It's my understanding that it the same as the '84 except it has some updated parts including the thrust washer. I didn't get the driven middle gear and I realize they should be kept as a matched set. No forks or shift drum either. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4028/4511886358_c30c1708fa_b.jpg I'm debating how to proceed. Do it just put this split thrust washer on in my 84 and call it done? Do I swap in this entire gearset? If I do that do I have to swap the middle gear to keep a matched set? I'm assuming that I would have to re-shim everything them too. Doesn't the worn split washer affect middle gear backlash? If so it would seem that it's pretty forgiving. Should I swap this 2nd gear wheel and 5th gear wheel onto the 84 shaft? I assume you should swap over the the 5th gear pinion too since it meshes with the 5th gear wheel, but I've changed many automotive trans gears w/o replace the mating one without issue. Is undercutting the dogs necessary or is it just a bit of insurance? The answers to some of these questions may become self evident when I get it apart. Any other magic I need to know? I know that's a lot of questions but I'm trying to gather as much input as possible before I open her up.

Thanks for the info. I'll have to do the starter mod when I pull the engine to fix second gear......

There is a Japanese engineer somewhere that deserves a kick in the bits and pieces for that one. Did adding the 8 gauge wire make any difference?

Aftermarket TCI available!

Here is my latest tweaked map. As a mentioned before this is a work in progress and may turn out to be to aggressive. I only have a limited number of miles on it so....USE AT YOUR OWN RISK If you don't want to be that adventuresome use the map in the first post. Here are images of last 2 so you can see the difference. This is the last "known good" map that I ran all last fall. As you can see, the cells from 5k on don't really add anything to the map. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2591/3970777932_1934c6b471_o.jpg And this is the latest tweak. All the cells have been moved to 6k or less to add more adjustability where it's needed and it's slightly more aggressive than the last map. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2005/4506033451_d562c0f614_o.jpg -

I use an older laptop with a serial port running XP and it works fine. I didn't have to change the com port or anything. But I don't think that's your problem. Do you have power between pins 13 (12v +) and 14 (ground) at the TCI with the key on. If the box isn't getting powered up, you won't be able to access it wit the PC. You should have spark with the standard IgniTech map. I rode mine several hundred miles on the original map. When cranking, it has been my experience that the VR has crappy spark and it can be missed if your not really looking for it. Did he check more than one cylinder? Is your mechanic sure that your P.U coils are OK? -

Glad to here it's running good. I believe you had mention that it didn't run well at low RPM and when cold. I haven't had such issues and couldn't figure out why you were have problems. I haven't noticed any flat spot but like I said before I'm pushing a sidecar so things are different for me. My MPG is still off a little (2-3mpg) from the Yammy TCI box but way better than it was with the original IgniTech programming. I think that's because it could use more timing under light load conditions, but w/o the MAP/boost sensor, the ignition curve has to be set to 'worse case' scenario. I've been tweaking the map a bit to try to make things a little better. I moved all the RPM cells down so the last one is at 6k RPM (I think). This gives me a little more adjustability where it's needed. I also added some advance in a few spots. Seems good so far but haven't had any really hot weather to know if it will ping when things are really cooking. I can post up what I'm running right now if anyone is interested in giving it a try. -

I don't know for sure how many are running the IgniTech box but I'd guess four or five. Timgray, Holgi and myself for sure, and The Crimson Knight has one on order, but my map has been downloaded 10 times so there might be others out there that haven't posted up. When I ordered my there was nothing to ask for because they had never made one. They make several models of boxes but the only one that I know that they program for a 1st gen Venture is their TCIP4 and it fits all 83-89 models So I'd tell them you want a TCIP4 for whatever year Yamaha Venture your bike is. It's too bad they don't have a part # system....... I'll update the original post to reflect that info. -
Speedometer squeal
tvking63 replied to Venturous Randy's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Hey Randy, in the linked thread the text says it's a 1/8'' pipe cap but the pics show a 1/4'' cap. Judging by the size, I'd say 1/4'' is correct. You might want to edit the text to match. -

My VR has cruise control and it works fine with the IgniTech box. I don't know if the cruise even interfaces with the ignition system at all. It gets it's speed info from the speedo head and most of the rest is vacuum controlled. -

Hey Chris, thanks for the PM to let me know there was some activity here. I don't see why the IgniTech box and my map wouldn't work with your bike. You mentioned that your bike is a '88 Cali edition. It's my understanding that all VR's 83-89 use the multiple pickup style ignition so it should work fine. The only issue I can see is that since your bike is a Cali edition, from the factory it might be jetted a bit leaner (anybody know?) for emissions reasons which could make it more prone to pinging under load. If it is jetted leaner, the stock map is probably has a more conservative advance curve to keep it from pinging. If it does ping with my map it's not a big deal to back off the timing a bit to keep that from happening. If you or your mechanic is not comfortable doing that, I'd be happy to tweak a map for your bike. Keep us updated on how things are going. The weather is just starting to break here. In fact I got in my first little ride of the season last week. Anyway, hopefully I can start diving into this and get some new info posted in the near future. Any updates on the MAP sensor Tim? -

I would think so. It's just a variable resistor. The output voltage would be obviously less. -

tvking63 replied to tvking63's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Hmmmm, I don't think mine is any more cold blooded than it was before, and I don't think about it being low on power under 2500rpm either. Colder fuel/air takes longer to ignite and burn so I would think that advancing the timing would be the right way to go. That make sense to me. I've done a map with 7k in the 10th cell that approximates the map I'm running. I'll try to post it yet today. Also I have access to the The Venturers site but they have been have 3rd party malware issues. They are supposedly in the process of getting it cleaned up but I'd rather not dig around over there until it's clean. -

Same here. Haven't got an opportunity to tweak the advance curve any further but it looks like that will have to wait for spring. -

Good to hear my map helped. Maybe. But they might be using a very conservative base map to cover their butts. The base map does seem overly cautious to the point of making the bike run poorly. The weather has kept me from tweaking the map further, but I'm also not sure how much I want to mess with it until we find out if timgray's pressure sensor addition works. If it does, the mapping will have to be entirely different to accommodate using the senor. -
Spark Plug troubles...
tvking63 replied to Ivan's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
This fall I had a bad spark plug cap go bad and to get me back on the road I removed the stock resistor cap and replace it with this. It requires that you have the screw on terminal end on the spark plug. http://partimages.genpt.com/partimages/43993.jpg http://partimages.genpt.com/partimages/44002.jpg My local NAPA store stocks them. Thinking about replacing all of them to ditch the resistors. -

I was unaware that the IgniTech box had a 5v output. I suppose I should read the documentation..... I don't see any reason it wouldn't support a MAP sensor as it, and a TPS are just variable resistors. The MAP sensor just used vacuum instead of throttle angle to vary the resistance. -

I don't know if you're aware but the ECM on GM (and a lot of other) vehicles outputs a 5v reference signal to power the sensor. I'd think you'll have to duplicate that voltage to get it to work correctly. I hate zombies. I think you meant Todd. Good to hear it runs much better, maybe my map isn't too screwed up. -

Tim, I assume you planning on using manifold vacuum instead of ported vacuum like the stock 83 boost sensor uses? That would make the map work for all 83-86 bikes. Edit: Sorry, stupid question. I had a brain cramp. You'd have to use manifold vacuum as ported wouldn't be enough to work the senor much at all. -

As far as I know, I'm the only one with an Ignitech box for a first gen w/ 4 pick-up coils. Your 91, I believe only has 2 pick-up coils and Ignitech has had that one available for some time. The timing curve that came pre-programmed is, in my opinion, not nearly advanced enough. My power and fuel economy were noticeably down. I've been tweaking the curve and have settled on one that has restored my power and MPG w/o causing the engine to detonate. At least nothing I can hear. Thinking about wiring up a knock sensor to be able to monitor possible pinging better. It looks like timgray is working on a solution that would incorporate the pressure sensor. I think that would be the best solution. When I get a few moments I'll update the original post with info and a link to download my modified map. -

I bought the first one they ever made. It took 15 days from the day I sent Paypal money. After I paid, I didn't receive any conformation from them. After several days I had to send an e-mail to find out if they received payment and if it was sent. I'd e-mail them and ask for a status update. I get the impression they are a very small outfit that it pretty busy. It seems to help to keep after them. -
