  1. Glad to hear they kept you...sorry to hear about the downsizing. They say the economy is better....but not to the people that have been laid off
  2. No one else has suggested it yet, but spend a weekend on a motorcycle course. If you've taken one years ago, take a refresher. It will be worth what they charge you for a weekend rather than having to replace parts on the 1st Gen because you were inexperienced. Even lifelong riders aren't perfect. Ask anyone here that has been riding for years and you'll find people that admit they have bad habits. Unless your friend is a riding instructor, he won't be perfect. My opinion on learning to ride in a parking lot with a Venture... you'll be going slow...and that will become discouraging. Slow speed handling is difficult on the Venture. Better to do parking lot training during a course on a smaller bike. If you make a mistake doing slow speed turns you'll lay the bike down. And if you try to put your foot down to stop it from going over while moving forward you'll hurt yourself.
  3. You need to use a relay so it gets full power or it won't be very loud. Larry (Carbon One) makes a mounting bracket to replace the horn on the right side and wiring harness (with relay and fuse) that makes it easy to do.
  4. Check with your Yamaha dealer to see if they have a way to change it.
  5. I bought one at Harbour Freight...and yes you have to double the value
  6. J&P sells a single fire adapter for $34 - http://www.jpcycles.com/product/730-382 I'm sure it is cheaper to make your own but sometimes it is easier to just buy one off the shelf.
  7. Looks nice !
  8. Do you connect two different wires from the tach to two coils or does the same wire go to two coils? One wire across two coils - wouldn't this pass electricity between coils?
  9. Per my earlier response.... if your tach is reading 1/2 the actual value, you are saying you are shifting at 2000rpm according to the tach? Then you are running the engine fine. That would be 4000rpm.
  10. Keep in mind that there is a waste spark on the bike. On the multi-meter I have I have to double the reading to get the proper RPM value. I don't have a tach on my bike but if you are shifting at 2000rpm you are shifting way too low. Peak torque is at 3500rpm. You should shift between 3000 and 3500rpm. Rev limiter on 2nd Gen is at 6200rpm....think it is the same on yours. http://www.bikez.com/motorcycles/yamaha_xvz_1300_royal_star_tour_classic_1997.php
  11. Tell Rick we are thinking of him and hope he gets back to his old self quickly. Don & Nancy
  12. That's what I've had
  13. My six gang box is wedged in there too. Hoping the 4 gang will be easier to hide/cram in.
  14. Showing off the battle scars and mementos of memorable moments. Sounds like you are having a great trip. Enjoy, ride safe, and who cares about compass headings ! Go with the wind !
  15. I did a search and you are correct. I thought it was 10A but other sources say 18A. I had tried 3 horns with everything else on the 6 gang block before and it popped the 30A fuse. Right now I have 2 horns on the 6 gang block with the third on an in line fuse and haven't had an issue. Thinking... two 4 gang fuse blocks. Two horns on one block by themselves with one 30A relay and one horn on the other 4 gang fuse block with everything else. 12 gauge wiring. Thanks Brad !
  16. No one knows how he is doing now ?
  17. I picked up a couple fuse blocks (http://www.ebay.ca/itm/271225775440?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649 - also available at Princess Auto) and am trying to figure out where to put them. I was hoping to replace the single 6 gang fuse block I have wedged behind the battery but no way no how will it fit under the seat or under the battery side covers. I didn't want to put them inside the fairing but looks like I'm going to have to. Mind you, in the years I've had the 6 gang fuse block I've never had to change a fuse. Reason for two 4 gang fuse blocks is I have : - passing lights - gps - powered trailer converter - 3 Stebel horns With all of it attached to the 6 gang fuse block it was blowing the 30A fuse between the battery and fuse block. I want to split the load across two 4 gang blocks, or just use one and feed the horns with an inline fuse. Right now I have one relay for each horn. Since the relays are 30A, could I run the three horns off one relay? Would clean up wiring a bit. The existing relays are under the battery side covers. Thinking 12 gauge wiring from battery to relay with 30A fuse, and 12 gauge wire to each horn. The relay has a post 30 which I would run power to, and has an 87 and 87A post that I could feed the three horns to. Would the one relay for three horns work?
  18. There have been a few posts lately of people considering or going to a trike conversion. I don't have the whine on my '09 but wondering if people that had it before the conversion lost the clutch basket whine when they went to a Hanigan conversion. Not sure if the drive train is different but must connect to the motor at the same point as the drive shaft. How does the Hanigan get power from the engine?
  19. I got the Tow Ready (Reese) Modulites, 119148 from a local RV shop (had to order it). It is an 119147 but has extra cable for power and a fuse module. $85. Put it on the bike tonight and my trunk LED no longer flashes when the signals are turned on. It is a powered unit and corrected the issue I had.
  20. Specs say 105" end to end. Think Smart Car. They are about the same length. I like to have fun and park beside one when I see it in a lot.
  21. Glad you had a good time !
  22. Bugs? In bikes? Does it do away with gremlins too ?
  23. I know I'm commenting in an old thread...but anyone know how Ponch is doing?
  24. For our trip last year I used Microsoft Streets and Trips. Allows you to put in things like : - bike mpg to calculate gas stops - time you'll start your daily ride - time you want to finish your daily ride (+/- 1/2 hr, 1 hr...). You can then get a list of hotels/motels/camp grounds/sites to see near your daily end point. I picked a location and then saved it to the gps as a stop - average cost per gallon of gas - will calculate your fuel cost for the trip - points of interest can be set and how much time you expect to spend at each one. This will adjust where you'll stop for the end of the day - how often you want to stop for a break and how long for each stop During the ride I also used "Mad Maps" on the gps to indicate points of interest along the route, find restaurants/gas stations/grocery stores/laundomats. When we made better time than estimated or less distance, I did a search on the Zumo 660 for camp grounds/hotels and edited my saved route. After initally setting a general route (what cities we wanted to go thru) I used Mad Maps and https://roadtrippers.com/ to tell me what is along the route. With roadtrippers you'll duplicate creating your route but then have it tell you where a variety of sites are (attractions, accomodations, food, entertainment, history, nature, shopping, sports, scenic drives). I also used State/Provincial government tourist sites to select what we wanted to see, punched it into Streets and Trips and had it find the optimum route. Then removed things that were out of the way (eg opposite end of the State). Hope this more than answers your question !
  25. Hope they find the problem and can get him back to good health. Best wishes
