might have to take a little time off here for a while
XV1100SE replied to oldgoat's topic in Watering Hole
Call the cable company and ask for the "retention" department. No, they don't retain water, they are supposed to do what it takes to keep you as a customer. Tell them you are going to switch to their competitor. Normally they'll give you 3-6 months at a discounted rate, or offer a plan better suited to your usage. It's hard to turn things around but keep plugging away at it. -
I have seven different weather apps on my smart phone. Between the seven at any given time there are four different forecasts. One will say dry and warm. Another one rain and cold....mostly cloudy....partly sunny. Weather forecasters use computer models that will show multiple possible tracks for a storm, or forecasts for what the weather "might" be. They pick one. Don't think there is a "smart" weather app for phones. You might find one app that is accurate today, but totally wrong tomorrow. When travelling, I'll use a couple apps to look at radar...and even these quite often are different for current conditions. I'll see what a couple of them are forecasting....make my own guess based on radar and what I see in the sky, and then keep an eye out for building clouds, cars coming towards me with lights or windshield wipers going....

I did a tech article a while ago on changing the fuel filter - http://www.venturerider.org/forum/engine-and-drivetrain/76515-2nd-gen-changing-fuel-filter.html It isn't that bad once you do it your first time. This is the article on putting in the Mr Gasket fuel pump. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/engine-and-drivetrain/86265-gasket-fuel-pump-conversion.html Here is the article on changing the points http://www.venturerider.org/forum/second-generation-venture-tech-talk/88602-fuel-pump-issues.html

While riding at higher rpms have you noticed a sudden drop in power? What you want to do is make the pump work harder and see if you get a sudden decrease of power...like running out of fuel. If you experience this, the engine is starving for fuel. If you ride and the bike stalls or won't start, take the left battery side cover off and turn the key on. Listen for the clicking of the pump working. Try starting the bike (hopefully it won't start) and if it won't start, tap the pump lightly with the handle of a screw driver and try starting the bike again. If it starts after this, I'd lean to it being your pump. Another thought....when the bike won't start, how much fuel is in your tank? Possible your overflow is plugged if the tank is low. This builds up a negative vacuum in the tank.

If it were the kill switch the bike wouldn't crank. Same with the kickstand cut-off. Looking at other possibilities. Just a thought....have you checked the battery connections? If you had the seat off/on... make sure the posts and connectors to the battery are clean and tight. Check the ground (near stock horn on right side) as well. Bad +/- connection could be draining power to turn it over but not start. I'm still thinking it is the pump...and like you mentioned the points could be worn out (there is a kit recommended that replaces the points). Intermittent issues are fun.... start with the inexpensive, easy to verify possibilities.

Could be your fuel pump. If it is the original pump it has probably failed. Turn the petcock off and start the bike, let it run for a couple minutes. Turn off the key and then turn on the petcock. Turn the key on and listen for the clicking of the pump. If you don't hear anything, your pump has gone. I've had mine fail while riding. Sudden loss of power. Pulled over to the side and the bike would not start. After a couple minutes it started and ran for another week before it failed on me again. After trouble shooting, I had the dealer replace it (mine was under warranty). There are a couple options for you if it is your pump : - OEM - search for "fuel pump replacement" on here and there is a brand/model recommended - search for "fuel pump contacts" on here for a way to replace the common failure point of the pump - lot cheaper than getting an oem pump

Baking Clutch Fluid - Exhaust Heat Shield
XV1100SE replied to Du-Rron's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I wouldn't wait. Report it to the dealer and when they find the problem they'll refill with new fluid. Would hate to see you have problems on the road when a visit to the dealer could resolve the issue now and not give you a bad taste for the Venture. Being under warranty, you don't need to try to diagnose it yourself. I agree with V7Goose....I think he nailed it with what the problem is. The seal might "look" good, but there could be something you don't see visually. Let the dealer test it. -

Ben - do you have an update on how Shah is doing? If you want to do a "group" thing for Abdul and Shah, let us know. Could be a fund raising, flowers, coffee.... -

Baking Clutch Fluid - Exhaust Heat Shield
XV1100SE replied to Du-Rron's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
LOL - you don't know me too well. I work at Toyota and our plant makes Corolla, RAV4, and Lexus RX350 in the I.T. department. I'm not a mechanic but do my own work on the bike or have local members help me when I'm not sure of something. My knowledge on the Venture is from reading the forums and tech notes. Your clutch fluid changing colours so quickly isn't "the nature of the beast". What you have is an abnormal condition. Pretty sure I've done about 20,000 km since my last fluid change which included a 10,000 km trip that included a lot of clutch work (eg getting to the top of the Mt. Rushmore observation area, the Bear Tooth....) and although I'm due to change it in the spring, my fluid is slightly golden but not black. Your Venture is still under warranty until at least 2017 (5 years from original purchase). Explain to the dealer what has been happening and ask them to fix it. If they say it is normal for the Venture, then you need a new dealer. -
Spark Plug Mystery?
XV1100SE replied to VanRiver's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
From the look of the plug, you weren't running on a full deck (of cylinders) -
Despite the salt, after seeing the Harley I bet you wished you were riding too. -30C/-22F this morning here. -15C/+5C here now at almost 5pm EST.
