Help with making brakes better?
XV1100SE replied to VentureFar's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I replaced mine a year or two ago with SS lines. I would have to say that any impact of replacing the lines would be more related to the age of the original ones. For me I did it for the "look" rather than functionality. Before doing anything, I would consider the age of the brake fluid. More than 2 years old, change it. Brake pads in good shape? Are the pistons in the caliper moving freely? If you want to beef up the brakes I think the general direction is to replace the front calipers with R1/R6 calipers. SkyDoc would be a good person to talk with about this. Only certain years/colours of calipers are bolt on replacements. From memory....the cost of new calipers was about the same as replacing all your brake lines with SS or pretty close. If you want more stopping power I think new calipers would be the most impact. -

Ahhhh.....someone else that follows the Curse of....! I noticed on History channel now there is another show focused on finding the Templer treasure. Interesting the history on the Templers. As for Curse of Oak Island...if they don't find anything conclusive (treasure or not) I hope they continue the show next year. They get a lot of money from the tv show that helps offset their searching costs.

Congratulations Don and good luck with the business. At least the stair-lift business made that "step" easier !

I'm in Kitchener so not that far from you. I'd gladly come with a truck and trailer and haul away some of the good stuff you don't have room for. I won't even charge you for taking it away. I've always wanted a boat...wife could use a buffet and hutch....

(sorry if this offends anyone but....) If I can't take most of my stuff with me I'm not going ! Wherever I may end up !

Couple easy things to do : 1) Add Seafoam to the gas. It will help clear out gunk in the fuel system. Don't be afraid to add a full can of Seafoam to half a tank of gas. 2) Do a carb tune on your carbs. This might be all you need for the popping on deceleration. I've seen tuning the carbs and synching them resolve this issue. As for "plugging the AIS" others have written that this made no difference. Didn't think anyone still did it. 3) Tires - older than 7 years? Replace them. 4) Steering head - there is a right up on a quick fix for this without tearing it apart. Only way I can see it being bearings is if you had a LOT of miles on it. For the steering head to test it, put the bike on a lift (see CarbonOne's lift adapter) and turn the wheel 45 degrees to the left, hold it and release (do not "bounce" test it). If the wheel holds and doesn't move you are good. If the wheel falls to the left on it's own, you need to tighten the steering head. 5) Horn - check your ground connection on the horn and clean the switch. The horn works off the ground making connection. 6) Passing lights - I recommend the GE H7616 bulbs - very bright, very narrow beam, reasonably inexpensive. Make sure you aim them at headlight height though....they are VERY bright 7) "running on three cylinders" - Seafoam might help. It cleans with flow so you need to run the bike, different throttle positions to loosen the gunk. It will help. After going thru the tank of gas, use an infrared thermometer to check pipe temperatures. Do this in the first minute of starting a cold bike. Compare all four pipes. Could be a fouled plug too so replace them before replacing any coils or wiring.

Brightest passing lights I've had on my bike are the GE H7616. Far brighter and longer reach than the Silverstar Ultra sealed beam. The H7616 is a Halogen "very narrow spot". This allows you to point each passing light. Set height the way you would your head light. Left passing light I have slightly right to not blind oncoming cars. The right is more towards the shoulder. They are a PAR36 4 1/2" sealed beam with screw terminals.

Guilty to all of the above BUT.... I was doing hardwood floor in my family room one Sunday night. Was cutting out the floor register (heat) with my electric jig saw. The hardwood is Ash and part way thru the motor on the jigsaw burned out. It was an older jig saw but Ash is a very hard wood and the motor couldn't take it. Sunday night, all the stores are closed...what do you do? Not complete the install that evening? Or...go the garage and get the battery powered jigsaw you recently picked up (just in case). I told my wife the jigsaw burned out, went to the garage and came in with the battery powered jigsaw. She looked at me funny when I came in, she didn't know I had a back-up tool. I finished the family room floor that evening. I have multiple drills.... - electric drill I've had since the 80's - electric hammer/drill - battery powered drill (okay...two battery powered drills) - battery powered impact gun (don't count - it IS 5. But each drill has a purpose. Nothing has the power of a corded tool. Battery powered are good for working outside) Compound mitre saws...2. One is a compound mitre chop saw, the other a compound mitre sliding saw. I was replacing carpet on my stairs with hardwood and the chop saw wouldn't cut the 10 1/4" width of the tread. I HAD TO buy a sliding saw. Can never have enough screw drivers... wrenches.... So, tools should be an item you NEED to have extras and back-ups of. #1 Something breaks and you have the part and tools to fix it,... but it takes you all day to find them. =>Guilty. I have 3 locations for my tools. Workbench in the garage, basement, and the last place I used it # 2 While searching for the tool you run into a lot of neat stuff and you can't remember where it came from. => Guilty # 3 You have a family reputation of having 3 of everything. => Guilty #4 You have reached MAX DENSITY and have no place to store that item you just picked up in a garage sale. => Guilty #5 You buy anything if it's cheap enough whether you need it or not, because someday you might?? => Guilty

New Guy and Possible Defector
XV1100SE replied to crossbowme's topic in Star Venture and Eluder Tech Talk ( '18 - Present)
Welcome to the forum ! You'll find more information here on the new Venture as people get experience on it. There are a couple owners here. -
Sorry to hear this Craig but as others have mentioned, keep the faith, keep fighting. As mentioned, if you need anything let the group/"family" know and we'll all do what we can.

The Ontario rally is in Niagara Falls July 19th to 22nd. Challenge to the WNY group to see if more of them come to the Ontario rally this year than the Ontario group goes to the WNY rally. So far we have 6 Ontario people saying "Yes" to the WNY rally plus 2 "Maybe". There will be more than this going .... can you out do us? http://www.venturerider.org/forum/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=503&day=2018-7-19&c=1

Rear speaker / amp question
XV1100SE replied to B.E. Coyote's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
The Polk 401's have been used by others but reports are that it didn't make much of a difference using the stock set-up. Issue seems to be the small size of the speaker. For HD's they have mounted speakers on the saddle bag lids. Think someone did this to their RSV but involved cutting a hole in the lid and using fiberglass to "mold" the lid up and around the speaker. -

This has been discussed previously....the speakers in the rear are stereo, not mono. -

The pictures from the Burlington M&E I only posted here. I HATE Facebook. Always have, always will....but use it because others do to keep in touch.

Congratulations on getting the Gen 3. Great ride report and this will probably swing those on the fence to look more closely at the twin. Funny your comment on no shake/vibration at stop lights. When I test rode the Ultra Glide before getting my RSV it was one of the things I didn't like about the bike.

Paul and his wife had an end of season MD at their house near Brantford (opposite end of town from Carl....can you blame him?).

Facebook is terrible as a support forum though. Answer someones question and 5 minutes later you can't find it. Gets swallowed up with advertising and junk posts (lost pets, BestBuy, what someone had for dinner). I block most of the garbage. With some of the other Facebook Venture sites I'll usually direct them to vr.org after posting an answer.
