Not sure if it is the same in the U.S. of A. but here in Canada all week killers are eco friendly....which means they work like crap killing weeds. Not like a few years ago when you could use "Week and Feed" and it would kill the weeks but nourish the grass.

Always good to leave one thing off the bike....make it less top heavy ! That rubber piece goes under the gas tank at the back end of the tank. You'll how it is fitted to fit in that location. The bolt that holds the back of the tank in place goes thru the hole in the rubber piece.

I'm camping as well. Site number....unknown at present.

I was referring to the D404 not being "long life". The E3's definitely last much longer...2 to 3 times the mileage of a D404. I also don't think the D404's are "strong enough" to take the weight of a Venture. Think they are meant more for cruisers.

5100 miles and 50% of tire left? What brand/model of tire came with the bike? From previous posts a Dunlop D404 on a 2nd Gen gets about the same mileage you are seeing. Running a Dunlop E3 on mine I get about 30,000 km front and back. Mileage difference makes me think that the D404 tire isn't sturdy enough for the weight of the 2nd Gen. Might be recommended/rated for the Venture but either way too soft or can't properly handle the weight of the bike. When you replace the tires are there very many options in the size for the 2018? I looked on Dunlop's site and didn't see the size (for the rear). EDIT - looked up the manual. OEM tires : FR 130/70R18M/C 63H Bridgestone/G853 radial J (T/L) RR 200/55R16M/C 77H Bridgestone/G852 radial J (T/L)

A good part of the cost of the product is labour cost though. Everyone competes on cost so even without tariffs and subsidies the manufacturers (even U.S. companies) will produce the product where they can do it the cheapest. If overall labour is cheaper in China for example....cheaper to build a factory (different building codes too) with cheap construction labour, cheap materials, cheap assembly labour....then companies will still make their product in China. Shipping costs are not large enough to equal the field. It was said that if Apple brought production of the iPhones back to the U.S.A then the cost to consumers would almost double. Free trade yes....such as between Canada and the U.S. where labour rates and costs are closer (Canada is higher hourly pay, add to that taxes to support our health care system, etc)...but unless labour rates, material costs, even currency are the same....there will never be equality. After China's rates go up, which is the next country (eg 3rd world) with lower costs that will welcome foreign investors and companies to produce goods to be sold in North America ? At one time it was Japan, then Taiwan, the Philippines, South Korea, now China. It is a moving target. Labour in North America isn't willing to cut their hourly pay in half or more in order to compete with foreign manufacturing because our expenses (housing costs, etc) require the higher hourly rate in order to survive. Takes two incomes per family just to survive. In China making $20 a day is enough. Here in North America that won't even buy a day's worth of food for a family.

With any manufacturer, they get parts where ever they can that is economically the best deal. There are always components that are locally manufactured (or assembled from global parts). "Made in America" is confusing when you think of companies like GM and Ford. Is it still an American product if it is assembled in Mexico? Or Honda and Toyota - source 65%+ parts in North America (as per NAFTA) - are they Japanese cars or North American? Lot of gray areas. Whether Harley is assembled in the U.S.A. or India...it is still a Harley. Most people want the brand name and image rather than looking into what percentage of parts are sourced in the U.S.A.. Same with Japanese cars. Ask someone where their Corolla was built and few would know that North American Corolla's come from Cambridge Ontario. They just see it as a Japanese car.

Toyota is always hiring, expanding. Submit an online application and if you get thru you can put me down as a reference. My brother still has a '74 AMF Sportster. AMF years for Harley were poor quality. He had an issue where if the bike didn't start on the first kick (no electric start on his) you were done. They had issues with bad flywheels. Once he replaced that the bike starts and runs nicely.

Great write up ! Sounds like you had a "fun" ride with the weather. Can be a challenge threading the needle between storms and glad it turned out well ! Safe ride on the rest of your trip. -
Heal quickly ! Sorry to hear about your finger.

For years the Japanese (Honda, Toyota) have built factories where they sell their vehicles. The Toyota plant I work at in Cambridge/Woodstock Ontario makes about 600,000 vehicles per year. We press our own steel, have plastics shops in each plant, paint shops... majority of the parts are sourced "locally" in Canada and the U.S. Last year we were the 2nd highest producer of Toyota vehicles globally and 1st two years ago. There are plants in Texas, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi. Our plant has over 8,000 team members, with thousands of team members at the plants in the U.S.. Add to that the number of people employed at suppliers... If Harley sells bikes in Europe in enough volume to build a factory there, so be it. Support the economy of where they sell bikes. This is a concept the auto manufacturers have done for decades. True companies have moved production to where labour is cheap to be competitive and profitable. How else do they pay their CEO's millions of dollars? I don't blame the companies for being capitalists. But I do miss seeing "Made in Canada or USA" on products. Even souvenirs are made in China and other places. That doesn't feel right though. Canadian maple syrup bottled in China and sold as a Canadian souvenir? Say it aint so !

Happy birthday ! (a day late but better late than never !) -
My condolences to Kevin's family as well. Freebird...well said.

I would start with a carb sync. Syncing my carbs helped with this. Do the sync and run some Seafoam thru the gas as well.

Plus/Delta/Q on my first day's ride with my new RSV

After a ton of chrome and shiny stuff to my bike....the one piece of chrome that I had to cover was the gas cap. Like you said, you see a lot of reflection in the windscreen. I didn't want to take a chance and make a mess with a rattle can so what I did was get the gas cap cover from Yamaha ($25). I put a fishing lead on it and looped it over a support under the plastic ignition cover panel. Won't lose it and it looks good. You mentioned "popping" on deceleration. You should be running the regular gas (89 octane). Do a proper sync on the carbs. Having access to a Carb Tune allows you to sync all four carbs. Maybe a member local to you can assist you. Don't count on the dealers to know what they are doing with the Venture. -
Thru the forum you can send either a message which stays on this site OR you can send as an email which will go to the email address you have registered in your contact info. Check your personal email (eg hotmail, yahoo, outlook.....)

Who in Canada has motorcycle insurance they're happy with?
XV1100SE replied to Semi-retired's topic in Watering Hole
Don't tell anyone in insurance that there is that much traffic here. They might raise my rates ! -
Don't have pictures with me but... I originally mounted one Stebel using Larry's (CarbonOne) bracket where the OEM horn went but switched to Charles' (SlowRollWV) mounts which put one Stebel on each side of the bike below and behind the passenger floorboards. Put the OEM horn back in place in the original location. Technically I have four horns operating (can't hear the OEM horns over the Stebel's). To power the two Stebel horns, I put a fuse block inside the passenger backrest and have separate power feed and relays for each horn. The fuse block also powers a USB port I put in my trunk to charge phones/cameras when riding and to power the trailer adapter.

Bought my 2nd Royal Star, this time I wanted a Venture!
XV1100SE replied to AABBCC's topic in Watering Hole
Looks to be in great shape. I would suggest that you check with Yamaha regarding a TSB or recall on the trunk mount to see if your VIN was affected/fixed. The 1999 year had issues with the bottom of the trunk cracking and there were supports or a rubber piece added to prevent cracking. Congratulations !- 29 replies

That's it....the cost of being a youth.....I'm so much younger than you....I'm only 58. Must be the provincial/location differences. Kitchener is about an hour West of Toronto so GTA / Golden Triangle (Toronto/Niagara Falls-Hamilton-Toronto) impact as well.
