Most I've put in so far was 19L and was already well into the reserve. Based on the specs I should have had 3.5L left but didn't want to take the chance of running out of gas on the way. One of these days I'll put a gas can in the trunk, start with a full tank and see how far I get and how much gas is really in the tank ! I know mileage differs based on driving style, head wind, whether it is city or highway... but knowing how much gas the bike holds and how much of it is accessible would be good. Knowing there is # L of fuel left once the engine starts cutting out would be good to know !

I have an '09 Venture. Bought it 4 weeks ago with only 2500km on it and now have almost 4400km on it. I've been keeping track of mileage and it has been consistent. Question I have is how far can I go on a tank of gas ? What I'm finding is that : 1) low fuel light comes on about 255km (158.45 miles) - mix of city/highway driving (and I do like to take advantage of the revs on the engine !) 2) with fuel cock still "ON" I can go another 21km (12.8 miles) before the engine starts to sputter and stall 3) if I pull into a gas station immediately after switching to "RES" it only takes 16.433L (3.615 Imp gal, 4.341 US gal) to fill it up (fill so it just touches the bottom of the neck) From the specs on the bike, fuel tank capacity is 22.5L (4.95 Imp gal, 5.94 US gal) with a 3.5L (0.77 Imp gal, 0.92 US gal) reserve (I take it the fuel capacity includes the reserve). So... if the spec says 22.5L and I put 16.433L in to fill it up when I finally switch to reserve, does that mean that there really is a little over 6L of fuel still left ? I was on level ground and on the highway when the engine started sputtering and riding in a straight line. If the "Reserve" is 3.5L does that mean that 2.5L (15 % !!) in the main tank isn't available without sloshing the bike around to get it picked up? If that is the case, is 3.5L really available in the Reserve or is some not picked up as well? Working out the mileage.... I'm getting an average of 47.448 miles/Imp gal or 39.505 miles/US gal - 5.954L/100km Based on a 22.5L fuel capacity does that mean I can expect to go 378km (235 miles) if I run it totally dry ? I like the sounds of that on a touring bike ! (sorry for all the conversions but this is to a mixed measurement forum ! )

I should add.... I'l also be getting a gps and would like the spoken directions thru the system too. Is this the way to go http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=15370 ?

Looking to get intercom head sets for my 2009 RSV. The one Yamaha brands is about $300 but I've seen some for as little as $65. Quite the range in price. Any recommendations for/against particular brands/models? As much as I'd like to get a bluetooth head set that can tie into my Blackberry for cell and music I'd like to be able to use the existing audio system on the bike (radio/cb). I've considered using the Blackberry with a bluetooth/FM transmitter but don't see how that could combine with a head set. Any suggestions appreciated. Maybe the 2011 model will include bluetooth instead of a cassette ?

That is a good thought. If the trip turns out to be May/June heading to Chicago/Texas/California/Vancouver/Ontario might be the way to go. If August/Sept... go the other way around.

Thank you for the feedback! (keep the ideas coming) Thru work I can get up to 6 weeks off and if the general consensus is 4-5 weeks isn't enough I'll go with more time. Like I said... I want to be able to spend time seeing the sights and stay off Interstates as much as possible. I know summer time would be killer thru the South so I was debating whether spring or fall would be best. Mid-May to end of June or Sept to mid-October would be the choices. Leaning towards the Fall. What I'm thinking of doing is getting a big map of the U.S. and Canada, mount them on cork boards and using push pins to flag all the interesting places to stop and see. I just bought a 2009 RSV with 2500km on it on July 20th. 1st owner bought it March 3/10 so basically it is a brand new bike. He bought it from Snow City Cycle in Scarborough. When I took it to the shop I normally deal with in Cambridge (Performance Cycle) for the safety I was expecting they'd look at it and say "new bike, nothing wrong" and give me the safety certificate without really looking at it. When the tech came out to take the bike into the shop in I pointed out that the left side saddlebag lid wouldn't open without hitting the passenger intercom connection. He said that the intercom connector was in the wrong location and said he'd try to put it where it should be. So, expecting a quick turn around to get the safety certificate.... turned out to be about 45 minutes because they basically did a PDI (pre-delivery inspection) on it as well ! The list of things assembled incorrectly were : 1) passenger intercom in wrong location (Performance Cycle put it in the right location) 2) passenger intercom wire pinched because of the way it was routed (hopefully not damaged internally but won't know for sure until I get an intercom) 3) screws used in trunk to fasten it to the bike are not the ones that are supposed to be used and are missing the rubber washers 4) chrome piece in front of wind screen has the middle mounting clips broken (tech said that if it isn't put in place correctly it is easy to break the clips) 5) antennas are reversed I called Snow City Cycle and they basically said that since the original owner never mentioned these things to them then the bike was assembled correctly and won't offer to correct the issues (the chrome peice apparently can cost around $200 for the part) Yamaha Canada said that the pdi done by Snow City should have picked up the assembly problems. I said that if the person assembling the bike incorrectly also does the pdi - how would they know they screwed up? They said that it isn't a Yamaha warranty issue and it is soley up to Snow City Cycle if they want to do anything about the issues. I know these aren't major issues (the chrome peice and pinched intercom wires are my main concerns) but has anyone else had issues with Snow City Cycle?

For the past two years I've been looking at the RSV and waiting for the right bike to come along. Two and a half weeks ago (July 20th) I came across a 2009 RSV with only 2500km (have added 1300km since). Original owner had it 4 months. My background is that I got my M license in 1990 (first bike was an '81 KZ305 which I put 20,000km on, second bike which I still have is a 1999 Virago 1100 which I've put 54,000km on). I'm still getting used to the RSV so thinking 2011 I'll do a Canada East Coast trip and plan the big trip for 2012. The "dream ride" is from Kitchener (60 miles west of Toronto) to Chicago to pick up Rt 66 and follow it to California (2 weeks). From there, Pacific Coast highway up to Vancouver (1 week), and then across Canada (1 week) to home. Not looking to do straight milage as this will be a 2-up trip and will be sight seeing along the way. Might extend it to 5 weeks once I lay out the final plans. What I'm wondering is .... when is the best time of the year to do this trip? Being in Canada and wanting to avoid leaving or returning when there is snow on the ground.... my window is basically May - Oct. Considering that I'd be following what used to be Rt 66 and going thru Texas/Arizona and how hot it can be during July/Aug.... when are the best months to go thru these States to avoid the hottest/wettest months?

LOL - No change in specifications. Don't think the colours are part of the specifications.... but I'll give you that the colour will change. Hoping for the black on black. Like the look of the Midnight Venture. I didn't get the "subject to change" from the Yamaha contact.... so must be written in stone. :-) How many people use the cassette ? What options are available to swap the unit out? Maybe replace it with a GPS? Hooking up an mp3 player would be the way to go. And the cb... usefull now when everyone has cell phones? See... I'm already looking at ways to customize my RSV when I get it.

With my 99 Virago 1100 if I run the lower octane I get popping and the occassional backfire. When I can I use the 94 Octaine from Sunoco. If not available, I'll fill with premium. -
I'm going to be getting a RSV either this fall or next spring and decided to call Yamaha Canada regarding some of the rumours I've heard. I called them this morning at 11am EST and heard back four hours later. Not enough time for them to call Yamaha Japan so I figure they got the info internally (would have been late at night in Japan). Here are their answers : 1) There WILL be a 2010 RSV 2) Fuel Injection/larger motor (and I take it casette player) - "there will be NO chages to next years model and all specifications are the same as the current model" Guess I'll be keeping my eye out for a good end of year price on a 2009 or pick up a 2010 in the spring. My Virago 1100 is doing well (and will keep it when I do get an RSV) so if the changes rumoured are to come true in 2011 then I might hold off another year. Hopefully the reps at the Toronto Motorcycle Show over the winter will have more details. Still not a subscriber to the site but plan on it ! Good group of people and lots of info on the RSV.

The Virago is rated for regular low octane gas too but you don't get the back firing with higher octane. Just a suggestion but would be interesting if someone tried a full tank of higher octane and reported back if that "fixed" the problem. -

Not having a RSV yet... but I do have an 1100 Virago which is known for a similar issue (and back firing). Somewhere read that the bike is set to run lean. What I do is run the highest octane gas I can get and avoid the lower octanes. 91 or 94 octane and no popping on deceleration. Would this help with an RSV?
