  1. To close this off... I went to Harbor Freight with Wizard765 and picked up the Tag Along. Had fun getting it across the border (guard went thru Wayne's van, questioned the number of parts vs single line item on receipt) but got away with just paying HST and not RIV. I upgraded the lights to LED's, picked up a plate for it yesterday ($35) and "finished" the wiring connection on the bike last night. Now to get the seat to fit with the converter under it and secure the wiring to the fender. Thanks to all that posted to this thread and special thanks to Wayne for taking me with him to Bob's and Harbor Freight.
  2. Have mine installed under the seat (sitting on top of the battery) and tested fine with the trailer. Went to put the seat on .... and if the unit is positioned in just the right spot the seat will go down. Off a little bit and the seat won't fit. I have the Stebel horn and wired the passing lamps to a relay under the seat so there isn't a lot of room under the drivers seat. Where did other's mount theirs? Is there room under the passenger seat? (I'm at work otherwise I'd be finding out for myself). Also.... noticed that when the turn signals are turned on the trunk wing light flickers with the lights. Should I have wired this into the trailer converter rather than into the bike connector? And for those wondering... I went with the Harbor Freight Tag Along. I applied all of the customer comments to the traioler and looking forward to giving it a test run. I haven't lengthened the tongue yet until I figure out just how much to add.
  3. I don't know about that but I'm happy with my '09 (even with stock air filters). Surprised a guy on a sport bike on the weekend when I blew by him. I was following behind him by a couple car lengths. He kept speeding up to 110 km/hr (70mph) and and slowing down to about 85 km/h (50mph), probably to impress his girlfriend on the back. I kept pace with him until I got tired of his antics. I dropped down a gear and blew by him doing 140 km/hr (about 85mph) - think I was in 3rd. His girlfriend was probably telling him afterwards to get a bike like the rocket that shot past him.... at least then she'd be sitting on a comfortable seat!
  4. Thanks for the confirmation !
  5. Picked up an isolator at Canadian Tire and was wondering if anyone has tried this or general thoughts. Hopefully the pics are detailed enough. '09 RSV to Harbor Freight Tag Along trailer (4pin) - picking up the trailer this weekend http://reese.cequent-cpi.com/product/detail.asp?ID=78014
  6. Intuitive menu isn't it? I've found that holding the Select button after selecting the station doesn't always take right away as well. You have to have the station tuned for a second before hitting Select to save it.
  7. If the buttons work for all other functions then it isn't a loose connector. For the controller the buttons are built in and don't require external connections other than for power, sound, antenna, cd, aux, and cassette. If you can use the up/down to go from preset to preset then it isn't the connections. I still think it is in how user friendly or intuitive the functions are (or not).
  8. You won't get hasseled on this site for "add-on" questions. Been too many months since I've been riding or I'd post an answer for you. And this evening we've been getting snow. Lots of rain tomorrow but snow forecast again for Wed. Give the guys a chance to answer your question.
  9. I had to go back to my manual for this one and re-read the section on manually tuning stations after doing work on the bike over the winter. Didn't make sense at first but what you need to do is hit the Select button until you go thru all the menu options until the radio frequency shows again. Then hit the up/down button for less than a second at a time to find your station. Then hit and hold Select for two seconds (or more) until the preset number flashes. Use the up/down to select which preset to savit it as.
  10. If the Nuvi 550 played mp3's and had an audio out jack I'd go for it. Just doesn't seem be be in inexpensive unit similar to the Nuvi 550 with these two features. .. or FM transmitter and waterproof?
  11. $2600 for the Baden dealer. Too much.
  12. Responded to Swifty and Wizard's PM's. The HF at $199 for the frame seems like a good way to go but I don't have access to welding equipment. As suggested, I'd want to have a tongue long enough to put on a cooler carrier. A box that is light enough and with a good locking mechanism and hinges would be nice and would have to look around for a good source. 8" tires... for the price of the HF... can't really go wrong... so I will reconsider that. Starting with a "kit" and then modifying it I would consider to be home made so registering it shouldn't be an issue. No rush in getting a trailer but if I find one at a good price I'd go for it. Building or modifying one is a possibility too. I'm going to call the trailer dealer in Baden today and see what their price is. The PiggyBacker is a nice looking trailer and the price is right ... until you add in RIV, brokerage, and shipping charges.
  13. I was looking at the car topper since Sears Canada doesn't carry the car topper recommended by our members in the States. Not too sure about the trailer though.
  14. Just came across this one in Baden. Anyone hear of "Forest River" trailers? The 3x5 would be a possibility. Will call them tomorrow for pricing. http://www.badentrailers.com/pages/products/luggage-haulers.php
  15. I was wondering too.... if I ride to South Carolina and pick up a Piggybacker and tow it home... how do you license it so you can get it home? Temporary plates even if you are from Canada ? Would Custom's let you bring it across with a State temp plate? If I did this (or picked it up in truck) and took a week round trip there would be a certain amount of duty free. They will ship to Buffalo for $79 (free shipping to lower States ended today) but will not deliver to a residential address. If I did this I could avoid brokerage fees at least but would still have to do the RIV process. HST I'd have to pay whether I bought a trailer in Canada or imported it so that doesn't matter. As of Monday the price goes from $975 to $950. Getting a bike trailer shouldn't be this difficult ! And why are the good deals only in the States ?!
  16. The other harbor freight trailer I was looking at includes the topper @ $400 - http://www.harborfreight.com/600-lb-capacity-78-inch-tag-along-trailer-66771.html Of these two... which one is best to go with ? The thing that concerns me is the RIV fee of $200, plus getting it passed (apparently Canadian Tire does this for free as part of the RIV fee). Also... does the HF trailer have a VIN so you can register it in Ontario? Do you have to do the RIV if it is a kit? The PiggyBacker is shipped in pieces so is it also considered a kit? If kits are exempt from the RIV then that is a consideration too. Things I'd like in a trailer : - decent locking mechanism on the box - swivel hitch (seems like a good idea on a bike trailer) - 12" wheels for highway crusiing - cooler box/holder - paint-able to match the cherry/raven bike - separate turn signals (separate from brakes) - LED ? I've been hoping to spend up to $1,000 for a trailer and everything else I've seen listed at Canadian trailer dealers starts at $2,400 and goes up from there.
  17. Where did you get your trailer? I've been looking at the PiggyBacker. Good price at $950 but add $200 for RIV processing and shipping ($186) plus the hassles with customs, brokerage fees and registration.... is there a good trailer available locally ? (Ontario) I've checked kijiji and autotrader but nothing listed. Suggestions?
  18. Make sure you get an agent before selling the movie rights !
  19. One of the great things about this site is that you come across articles you haven't seen for a while or missed before. I happened across these two that are good reads and reminders as the riding season starts. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=48003 http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=9893 Thanks to Monty and Carl for these riding reminders. And be safe out there !
  20. From this link you'll see options for 4 wire and 5. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=57470 (per Mel) - 4 wire is for system with integrated stop light/turn signal 1 wire for tail lights 1 wire for left turn/brake light 1 wire for right turn/brake light 1 wire for ground 5 wire is for system with turn signals seperate from the brake lights. 1 wire for tail light 1 wire for brake lights 1 wire for left turn signal 1 wire for right turn signal 1 wire for ground
  21. Do a search for trailer lighting and you'll find lots of tips. For example... http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=52971&highlight=trailer+wiring
  22. Came across this article... http://www.cyclecanadaweb.com/articles/10634/ Honda is seeking a patent for a motorcycle seat belt in combination with an ejector seat.
  23. As long as the bracket isn't broken then you should be able to just buy a rectangular reflector and glue it on. Other option is to replace both sides with ones that have lights.
  24. Trailer won't be until next year but figured while I'm completing other work and have the seat off I'd save some time by wiring for a trailer now. I can see doing a 5 pin connector now and adapter if I end up with a trailer that uses 4 conductors. Could fuse the conductors on the bike or use an isolator but didn't want to do that if I didn't have to. Still like some ideas on whether an isolator would be good to do now or fuses.
  25. The way I'm reading it is for the most flexibility, on the bike wire it for a 5 wire connector and that way whether the trailer has a 4 or 5 pin I'm covered, other than possibly that the connector on the trailer looks like, but that would be easy to convert, either using side cutters or an adapter. Okay... that covers the connector (which the wiring harness should be easy to find and just wire it in). Since no one suggested splicing in at the tail light I take it under the seat is the "recommended" way to go. I'm going to want to modify the wiring under the seat then since I also use the trunk wing so everything splices in neat and secure. Not too many comments on using an isolator. From reading other threads on trailer wiring I got the impression that it helps isolate shorts coming from the trailer. Yay's or Nay's on putting in an isolator?
