I don't just let it sit idling. Rev it to make sure the carbs are opening/closing, keep the oil moving... Brad - you need a CarbonOne lift with legs !!! While running the bike on the stand I go thru a couple gears as well. This way you know any linkages are free and lubricated. I know there is disagreement on starting the bike in Winter... but for me it works. I must have done something right with the Virago as it ran and looked new when I sold it. Considering it still had the OEM pipes after 12 years with no visible signs of rust...

To make sure the stabilizer (Sea-Foam) goes all the way thru, well into reserve, add Sea-Foam to the tank and fill with fuel after a good run. Run it on reserve till I get home (couple miles). Parked in the garage over the winter on the CarbonOne lift with battery in. Periodically during the winter if the temperatures are above freezing I'll start the bike and let it run until it is good and hot (eliminate condensation) changing rpm (keep the carb moving) while on the lift. If the battery isn't strong enough to start it I'll connect the battery tender/charger. Running it for a while gives it enough of a charge. I don't cover the bike. No room in the garage to park the car so it is pretty much the bike and work bench. Did this with my '99 Virago and when I sold it earlier this Spring it still looked brand new (with 54k km) with original pipes.

Its part of the Japanese (and Korean) culture. You can control the manufacturing process and quality levels. You also know you have a stable (financial) supply chain. -
But what is "one of ours"? I work for the Toyota plant in Cambridge making Corolla, Matrix, Lexus RX350 and the RAV4. We have our own stamping plant and plastics plant. Employ 6,000+ and has a big boom to the local economy. I'd guess that 70% of the parts are sourced in North America. Is this a Japanese car or North American? Same goes for Kentucky/Indianna/Texus where Toyota has factories. Big 3 make cars in Mexico and other places in the world... are these Mexican cars or U.S.? Dell is out of Texas... but where do they get their components? To be competitive, they source parts from all over the world? Harley... we all know they source parts from China as well but are they "made in the U.S.A"? Weren't they threatening to move out of Milwaukee? You look at a can of mushrooms in the grocery store and the majority of shoppers would choose the cheaper one. You want North American, you have to be willing to pay for it. Our labour rates are more than Mexico, China, Japan. What hurts them the most is the exchange rates. That has been one of the deciding factors for Honda and Toyota on building cars where they sell them. Not disagreeing with "buy made in North America"... but how many people will do this when it hits their wallet? Or what about when you can no longer buy made in North America? Where is RCA today or clothing/shoes?

Sounds like CC is taking care of you and from this sounds like their customer service ethic is good. Although there were issues initially... because of the way they've handled it I'd be open to dealing with them.

Looked at his profile '89 Venture Gerry.... you can post your bike year/model in your header so it is easy to see what you have. Otherwise, make sure you post specifics ! http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=58880&highlight=header- 2 replies

See... it isn't just me. A lot of Canadians hate that word ! I've ridden down to about -7C (19F). Get comments from people - "must be cold riding in this weather" - nope... chaps or lined pants, boots, coat with thermal liner, good gloves. I'm still cautious though.... damp road below freezing and you get ice or even frost on the road. (those are two other words that should be banned).

Freebird - is there any way we can amend the site rules to prevent religious/political topics as well as the four letter word starting with an "s" and ending in "now" ? On the flip side... can we prevent all the gloating all our members in the deep south seem to do when us Northerners have to deal with that four letter word?

Sorry... to the three listed... add a fourth that has been proven statistically.... Subject 4) Helmets save lives and reduce head injuries I responded to the comments in the other thread about Trader's post. I read it twice before I realized that he wasn't trying to be insensitive. I got it.... and posted that the way it should be interpreted was that we all need to be careful and that protective gear helps. I agree it wasn't the best place to post that comment... but I'm sure we've all posted something that we later regretted or was not interpreted the way we intended. We all have the right to choose the level of protection we wear. Yes, I understand and acknowledge that full leathers should be worn all the time and yet when it is hot I'll wear jeans and a t-shirt. Do I know better? Yes... but I do it anyway. I always wear a full face helmet (for the extra protection for the face/jaw) and boots (because I feel more stable at a stop than shoes would). So for those of you that choose not to wear a helmet, that is your choice. I'm not going to preach to you that you should wear a helmet for safety (preaching is against the rules too)... I think if a poll were taken regarding the subject of this thread... yes, it was not the appropriate place to post those comments would win hands down. Trader acknowledges this, so lets all move on to better thoughts, remember (whether you pray for them or offer best wishes and support) those who have had accidents this year, and hope or pray that everyone else stays safe and healthy.

Dano needs our prayers
XV1100SE replied to Freebird's topic in Inspirational, Motivational, Prayer Requests, Etc.
We wish Dano a full and speedy recovery. As for protective gear... we all need to be reminded periodically that anything can happen to you on a bike no matter how good or safe a rider you are. Sh!t happens that is out of our control whether it is with other vehicles (cars, trucks, other bikes), road hazards (oil, potholes), other drivers (inattentive), weather, medical conditions, or wild life.... or our own actions (inattentive, changing radio stations.....). Whatever the cause, the results aren't usually good for us. Any safety gear we wear whether it is helmet or leathers, anything is better than nothing. Don't think Trader was saying anything other than a reminder to all of us.... wear your gear all the time ! -

Mike - glad you are okay. Too many issues for such a short ride !

I agree. The Star rack never seems to have reports of rusting/flaking issues. It is important to have the support chrome strips as it spreads the load instead of being four posts taking the load - you'll crack the trunk lid or they'll go thru and make a big hole. Maximum weight is 20 lbs... and make sure you do NOT close the trunk by pushing down on the rack and don't use it to open the trunk. This is written up in the installation instructions.

Rear speaker problems
XV1100SE replied to Maritimer's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I didn't argue with them but the original dealer knew the PO and the PO said he'd never taken the chrome windshield trim off... but they wouldn't admit they screwed up. I gave them a list of what my dealer had found wrong with the assembly... but still didn't help. -
Rear speaker problems
XV1100SE replied to Maritimer's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
My dealer said that the speaker goes to Clarion. Only took about a week for them to get it in. Work scheduled for this Tuesday. As for warranty work... I mentioned to the dealer that the fairing/windshield tab was broken on one side. They said that Yamaha wouldn't cover it because PDI is supposed to make sure everything is done correctly during the build. Yamaha's attitude would be that the owner had opened the fairing and broken it and wouldn't cover it. I still blame the original dealer that the PO had purchased the bike from. My dealer (who did the safety inspection when I purchased it from the PO) had pointed out the chrome windshield tabs were broken (and a few other items done incorrectly) and neither the original dealer nor Yamaha would do anything about it.
