I sent Freebird a message asking if he can restore the pictures.

Draining the fuel tank
XV1100SE replied to Herm1221's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
If you are going to drain the gas tank, put Seafoam in and turn the key to fill the carbs with Seafoam. Not as familiar with the 1st gens but do you hear the fuel pump coming on ? Let the Seafoam sit for a day. Seafoam works best when there is a flow but it will do some of the work. Put some gas in it....maybe equal to how much Seafoam you put in and then try starting it and it it does start....let it run for a while (flow of Seafoam thru the carbs will help). Then top up teh gas and go for a good ride. There are other products that can be used to soak the carbs. Someone else can make a recommendation on this. Hopefully you don't have to pull the carbs and clean them, jets, etc. Basic questions though.... - check spark? - spark plugs okay? - fuel pump? -
You might be able to find them online. You could also consider getting the plastic OEM ones chromed. I've had plastic chromed on my bike and it looks like the real thing. For another member I had his OEM air intakes chromed and they look as good as the billet ones....and doing this is half the price! There are "do it yourself" kits available or look for a shop that chromes plastic. They can even chrome wood and many other materials. Sometimes it is a shop that does trophies that will do it for you.

I came from an 1100 Virago to the Venture. After riding the Venture for a few months I took the Virago for a ride and it felt like a very small toy. Once you get used to the Venture's characteristics and handling you won't want to ride anything else.

Help me help you. Please read: about motorcycle gear
XV1100SE replied to VentureFar's topic in Watering Hole
Like you I wanted a jacket with airflow. I started my riding experience with leather, found it way too hot in the summer (no ventilation). Textile was the same - wouldn't let air thru. Then I went to a Tourmaster. I'm on my second one now and highly recommend it. Mesh outer shell, rain liner and thermal liner. For those really hot days, I have a cooling vest to wear underneath the jacket - soak it in water, ring it out, wear it. Good for a couple hours in the heat. They look somewhat like safety vests but are different in the material. My choice on riding boots are Original S.W.A.T.. I did a search for what people wear for work (eg Police, prison guards, security) and they hated the boots their work provided them but recommended SWAT (and one other brand I don't recall). I can wear mine all day and my feet stay dry in the rain and don't overheat in the hot weather. I switched my work boots to SWAT as well - composite protection, waterproof, no slip sole. Zippered side, lace, and velcro strap at the top. Very durable and last multiple seasons... and the safety boots are super light as well and are as comfortable as my riding boots. I've been wearing SWAT boots when I ride since 2010. -

Crappy, clunky, difficult shifting
XV1100SE replied to Semi-retired's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Have to agree about checking the clutch. Have you ever replaced the clutch plates? Is there slipping in 4th and 5th? When did you change the clutch and brake fluids? I think the owners manual says it should be replaced every 2 or 3 years. As for oil....what are you using? I use Rotella T6. Check your oil level - I find if mine is low (if I don't put enough in during an oil change) it will "clunk" on shifting. -
Keep fighting Bob !! Thanks for the update Tom.

Doesn't put the bike completely straight up but put a 2x4 under the kickstand (make sure it has a slight lean to the left....you don't want it going over the other way). Oil should be at or around the halfway mark in the glass. Maybe someone else can comment on the throttle cable...but aren't there two? Maybe one of them is binding or broken.

Best wishes to Bob and to a speedy recovery

Seems like a new motorcycle business model might be emerging?
XV1100SE replied to Tennessee's topic in Watering Hole
I thought Zero was one of the bigger brands in the e-bike world. Probably the direction of the future. I noticed they have brand new Hondas and Harleys....and even "new" 2013 and 2011 Hyosung. Hyosung didn't take off very well in Canada. New bikes the dealer has a lot of money tied up in inventory. Used bikes they take a chance on being able to resell but mark-up on a used from trade in price to resell price is pretty good. You are probably correct on the used market. They probably take in a used bike to sell a used bike, rather than on a new bike. -

With the handling...what size is the front tire? Stock were 150's but some have gone to 130's which improves the handling but will be affected more by things like road snakes.... -
If you are going this week for a ride, let me know. I'm off work this week and could use the fresh air....and maybe there will be a discussion of the English language.
