At the Hotel last night the hotel phone rings
XV1100SE replied to midnightrider1300's topic in Watering Hole
I think it is just a difference in attitudes. I agree that there can be areas of a city you don't want to be alone in after dark...and you have to be aware of your surroundings. You don't park your bike or car on a dark street where there is broken (auto) glass on the road. Covering the bike is a sort of out of site, out of mind deterent. Removing the gps when you park is always a good idea, locking helmets when away from the bike another good deterent from theft. As for attitude... statistics might show Canada similar to the U.S. overall... but if you ask Canadians whether they would carry a WEAPON for "what if" situations, I think you'll find the majority would say no. In my opinion I think Canadians would say there is no need to carry a weapon.... any kind of weapon. Again... I strongly point out... I'm NOT commenting about being for or against guns. I agree with being prepared when travelling but in my mind that is about what clothes to pack, tools to carry, planning the route. Travelling in Canada I wouldn't be concerned about my safety and having to protect myself. Police are only a cell phone call away. I would hope that the majority of the members see things this way as well rather than feel they should be "packing" in case they might have to protect themselves or "take the law into their hands". If you feel you have a chance of running into a situation where you might have to protect yourself... how safe do you feel? Out of curiosity.... if the International were held in Canada.... how many Americans wouldn't come because they can't bring weapons across the border? -

From the number of comments lately in different threads for the need to be armed when riding in the States.... is it safe to travel there any more? Are things that bad???? I wouldn't even consider a gun as necessary when travelling in Canada. Sorry... this isn't about being for or against guns. Its about whether or not you feel safe while travelling. -

I think they were just moving the gps out of the way so they could get at your cassette player ! Hard to find item now.... worth more than the gps ! -
Long Distance Riding - Part One: Setting the Scene
XV1100SE replied to twigg's topic in Watering Hole
Good point ! This is where size doesn't matter. Any object travelling at a high rate of speed can inflict a lot of damage when it comes to a sudden stop. Another good point, one that goes outside the boundaries of just driving (any vehicle) when you are tired. Hadn't thought about the "risks" involved in riding in the rain with sliding or reduced visability. But where do you draw the line on being a responsible citizen? Not only do truck drivers have limitations, so do bus drivers, pilots and even train operators. Think some of the limits imposed are to reduce liability of the operator/owner but also because our thought patterns and reasoning are impacted by fatigue. Everyone has a different limit. And yes... it is to protect the operator from demanding employers too. Do I want to be in front of a trucker that has been driving for 24 hours straight? Not a chance... just like a trucker (or anyone for that matter) doesn't want a car coming towards them where the driver has been drinking. There are two sides in this arguement. One is responsible people taking responsible actions. The other side is the need for legislation to protect people from themselves. See Darwin awards.- 26 replies

Long Distance Riding - Part One: Setting the Scene
XV1100SE replied to twigg's topic in Watering Hole
Agree with you. I don't have a problem riding a long distance if I'm going somewhere specific. In planning a "long distance" ride/vacation, I'm intending to stop to sight see, call it a day if I'm tired. But looking forward to any tips I can pick up thru this thread.- 26 replies

Second that (as I said in one of my PM's to you). Best to pull out what was added by the PO and take it back to OEM as much as possible. Pro's and con's to the swivel hitch... as there are with a fixed hitch. Seems to be personal choice. Mine is fixed and never had an issue when cornering.

I'll ride until they put salt down on the road. Even once... and I park it until after a couple heavy rains in the sping. Will be a cool weekend here in Ontario this weekend but no snow forecast. Manitoba apparently got some.

Headlight adjustment
XV1100SE replied to alwrmcusn's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
This might be a good time to mention other "hidden gems" on the 2nd Gen. Such as... - accessory plug under drivers seat - removeable cap for cigarette lighter below drivers seat on left side .... and I'll throw it out there... hidden cassette deck ! -
Darn ! What did I miss?

I did the epoxy paint several years ago and it has stood up with no chipping using the bike jacks/lift. Spills clean up easily, non slip....

Sealed beam replacement light bulb - STR-4NK35-50-00 $18.95 Yamaha has a halogen one as well but not sure if you need a lens for it as well. STR-4NK35-50-01. Replacement H3 lens STR-4NK35-17-01 I went with GE H7616 bulbs as replacement - a LOT brighter than the stock bulbs. You can put in a 4" H3 sealed beam "bulb".

Glad to see you online ! Take care !

Warranty Question?

I had my right rear speaker replaced (no hassle). The seat could be interesting... post your response from the dealer. -
What a great day ! Thomas (Midicat) met us in Kitchener for the start of our excursion. Took back roads to Woodstock where we met Phil (Sleepy2), Rob (WrenchRob), Brad and Rhonda (BradT and Naugh-T). Phil rode with us to Brantford... where sadly no one met us. From there Nancy and I rode to Mississauga where Steve (Pictou) met us. All in all, over 320km. Good weather until about 10 minutes from home when we ran into a bit of rain. Rode mostly between 80-90k/h (according to gps). Based on mileage and gas used... 51mpg (Imperial). Will set up another delivery run for next Saturday. Hopefully those that coudn't make it today will be free then. For those that can/cannot make it... please post here to let me know.

Larry... when you read thru this thread... know that Nancy and I wish you a speedy recovery and all the best ! Don
