  1. Just saw this thread. Merry Christmas and give my best wishes to Marca (and to you of course Carl). Glad things went well with the operation. Make sure you nurse her well !
  2. It was an old bike when I got it. 🙂
  3. Let me relate an actual story .... My first bike was a Kawasaki KZ305 (cruiser). Don't remember why (probably leaking gaskets) but I rebuilt the motor. Took the valves in to a shop to get them lapped and was told 3 needed to be replaced but the 4th was fine. Rode the bike for about 2 months....was running better than when I got it. On my way to work one day the motor started spinning up and I lost power. One of the valves broke and bounced around inside the cylinder. Ended up having to buy (after finding one) a new motor. Guess which valve broke. Now I don't skimp when doing repairs. If one headlight burns out I know the other won't be far behind so I'll replace both. That is your hint on which valve broke. Learned from experience.
  4. Or we wait a little while and see what happens with Covid. We are in "lock down" come this Saturday. I'm ready....but willing to play it safe.
  5. I asked Mary at Performance Cycle when I picked mine up if you had to replace those bolts...she said the rubber could harden over time so good to replace them. The new bolts are "only" for putting it all back together. Could still check valve clearances and use 3 old bolts just to button it up but not complete the assembly until you get the 3 new ones in. Not going to be riding for a few months anyway. I'm sure Carl wouldn't charge much for storage.
  6. I picked up my parts today.
  7. Hope the surgery went well. Speedy recovery !
  8. Give the Tour Deluxe a little more time and you'll get used to the weight. At 62 you are still young (I'm 61 and ride a 2009 RSV). I wouldn't consider going back to the '99 Virago 1100SE after riding the RSV - before I sold it I took the Virago for a ride and it felt like a toy.
  9. @sleepy2 If back ordered in Canada....you might check with Pioneer on availability in the U.S.
  10. From Mary at Performance Cycle - "The only way to buy the sealing rubbers for the 2012-2013 is the bolts come with them. you probably could use them on your bike as well, however they are b/o from Yamaha and b/o have been taking up to 2 months." I've sent her an email asking if the pre-2012 bolt/rubbers could be used on your bike. I don't see why not since she suggested the 2012-2013 bolts could be used on mine. I also asked if the bolts on yours need to be changed when replacing the gasket. See if Pioneer (U.S.) has the bolts for yours. I'll post Mary's response when I receive it confirming you can use pre-2012 bolts/rubbers on your bike. Her email is Performance Cycle <sales@performancecycle.ca> I've ordered the gaskets, rubbers, and plugs for the cylinder drain for mine. FYI - From Mary - "The sealing rubbers # 5EA-1111G-00-00 up to 2011 $16.31 each and for 2012-2013 # 5SL-1119E-00-00 (which are the bolts & rubbers) $5.95 each but b/o."
  11. I've changed my coolant and re-used the plugs without issue. I don't think you need to change them every time you remove them. If you did them fairly recently I don't think you need to.
  12. I'm impressed with Performance Cycle! I didn't realize that there was a difference in parts for the 2012/2013 RSV but apparently there are differences. For "up to 2011"... there is sealing rubbers 5EA-1111G-00-00 @ $16.31 that goes over bolt 90109-066F0-00 (didn't ask for price). Cost of the rubber is $16. For 2012/13 there is 5SL-1119E-00-00 (which are bolts with rubbers). The 2012/2013 bolt/rubber is $5.95 but back ordered. I don't know if these parts are interchangeable as no part numbers are listed as replaced by another. Thru Performance Cycle I have ordered : - sealing rubbers # 5EA-1111G-00-00 up to 2011 $16.31 quantity 16 - valve cover gasket # 4NK-11193-00-00 @ $44.71 quantity 2 - cylinder coolant drain plugs # 90338-11152-00 quantity 4
  13. I've asked Performance Cycle for the part number of the sealing rubbers. For the gaskets at $29 ea....vs $45 locally.....exchange rate, shipping....I'll get mine locally from Performance Cycle. They've always been good to deal with. Anyone else looking...the cylinder drain plug is 90338-1152-00. @skydoc_17 - Earl - can you comment on what could be referred to as the sealing rubbers on bolts" ? Other than the valve cover gaskets and cylinder drain plugs...anything else needed?
  14. It isn't the bolts...apparently there are rubber boots on the bolts that need to be replaced.
  15. Got a response from Performance Cycle about gasket cost. Their response : "Those gaskets are $44.71 each and would have to be ordered which might take up to a week to get. When we do the job we also replace the sealing rubbers on the bolts which are $16.31 each, and you need 16, they would have to be ordered too." Comments on the sealing rubbers on the bolts? This makes the cost $350 to start. Not sure what it would cost to have the dealer do this (if they have a mechanic that knows the Venture - Performance Cycle used to...don't know if they still do)
  16. Found the gasket part number - 4NK-11193-00-00 Common shims, particularly the 265 and 270, 275 sizes Steps by V7Goose also suggest changing the coolant and plugs...remove and clean the carbs Also... - sizing chart - - step by step guide to doing it -
  17. We can probably order the gaskets we need from Brantford Motorcycle. How many bikes in total are we talking so far ? Mine and Phil's.... @skydoc_17....do you have part number for the gasket(s) required?
  18. I'm agreeable with this.... if Carl doesn't mind. Earl... availability of the shims? I have the tool.
  19. That garage looks familiar. Carl renting out his garage now?
  20. Out of curiosity....if I were to request the shim kit over the winter....possibly end of December....are there other members in South Western Ontario that would be interested in doing theirs as well? @sleepy2 @Wizard765 @Grez007 @saddlebum @stickhandle2 @animal575 @Midicat @Uthred @dusty roads @racerguy36 @Barry.B @dogman @DonnyRudeDude @CALEDON @Not That Guy @Grey Wolf @Evan @Brownie57 @Scifiman @herb1 @Barnie @rickv Think I listed the members in the area to see if there is interest. Hopefully @Marcarl would be interested in providing his proven and respected input, his guidance in putting most of the parts back on the bikes... For those interested... PM me and we can either set this up as a "come see how it is done", or a "roadshow" where we visit those interested in doing it with assistance...or if you just want to do it yourself.... We could take donations for postage/insurance and to add to the kit.
  21. When the border was open and I went across to the U.S. side I'd generally pick up two things. Seafoam and Velveeta cheese. Both are half the price just south of the border. Wouldn't go to the U.S. just for that but was interesting crossing back into Canada and just having cheese to declare. Got a few funny looks....then a "have a nice day" from the border guard.
  22. Figures I just paid $12.99 at Canadian Tire. Will have to find a Home Hardware and pick up a couple more cans.
  23. Thanks !
  24. Haven't been on much the last week and a half. My Father passed away on October 9th. He was 98 years old. Right up to the end...including the morning he was admitted to the hospital....he still lived at home, cooked his own meals, cut his own grass. Was physically and mentally strong. The Wednesday morning (Oct 7)morning my sister called me, he had walked a couple blocks to get his hair cut but became disoriented...not like him. He made it home and my sister got a call from the barber that something was wrong with him - everyone knew him because he was always go-go-go, would be seen walking a lot. She called me and I told her to call an ambulance. Two days later...with family present, he passed away. My mother had passed in February '99. Born on a farm in Saskatchewan in 1922...worked at Massey Ferguson in Toronto and Brantford for 42 years. Retired when he turned 65 (a year before Massey went bankrupt) so got 33 years of pension and healthcare. A good long life, always close to family, relished in having large family gatherings, would party and dance until the end.....will be greatly missed.
