  1. Dexx, 20w50 will not hurt your bike as long you stay away from the energy saving lable. I myself use Mobil One Syn.15w50 but the bike has been using mobil one since new.I tried other brands on the bike but Mobil One does me the best job - runs cooler -runs smoother - better gas mileage. There are other brands you can use - Castrol - Mobil One - Amsoil and so on.I myself stay with 15w50 year round. Its all up to your taste of oil. buddy
  2. Dido, The 83's are the beast of the family, these V-4's can take it.Like the old saying goes - Run it like you stole it. Mine has 73,000 this past week low miles for these motors,Do Like Yammer Dan said run the dog out of it you won't be sorry I'm not. When I bought this bike it had been sitting for some time gas mileage stunk 28mpg,I ran the dog out of it too ,Plus showing my buddies how bad the beast is too.Gas mileage has jumped up to 43-46 mpg now,so yes running it hard at times does help very much. buddy
  3. Yes this too,Yammer sounds better plus easier to do.Do this first. buddy
  4. Yes you do have blockage somewhere, could be proportioning valve sticking which leads to front and rear brake hoses or return bleeder in master cylinder? May have to remove rear master cylinder assembly unit and do a good cleaning. Hang on more info. will be heading your way. GoodLuck let us know what you find buddy
  5. First off keep your hands on the handle bars,Sounds like what Mom would say .Could be several things like brake caliper sticking - wheel brg - steering head brg -ect ect.Put the cycle on the center stand and check your steering for being to tight or too loose and spin the wheel and see if its hard to spin.look for the easy stuff first. You will get more info. as you go along from the family here. buddy
  6. Check your pigtail from your pickup-coils,Left side of bike just under driver seat on frame work white in color, this will cause the problem your having. even though they are pluged in does not mean it is getting good connection.Photo included of location of this pain in the neck but easy fix.Hope this will fix your problem it did mine.Had no fire to two cylinders untill I fixed the pigtail connection. buddy
  7. I set the side stand on a 2x4 and checked the oil level, which is even with upper level mark on sight glass,I took the bike on a 200 mi ride today down to Tx. down around Bowey and back dang it was hot. Arms got sunburned - bummer, anyway the oil light came on two times so I thinking the same thing now - CMS board. I'll take it apart sometime this week and check all the connections & solders. Thanks for all the input guys:thumbsup2: buddy
  8. Ok guys my 83 is running great just turned 73,000 mi,Coming home from a meet & eat.My oil light came on while going down hwy.pulled over and checked level which is good - full of oil mobil one 15w50.I started back down the road no light untill about 10 mi it came back on,stop and checked? everything seems ok,light stayed on all the way home 15 more miles or so.Watched temp gauge too ,did great cool running in 90F heat.So am I missing something or just replace level sensor for oil and go on.Engine has no knocks or weird sounds like a second gen.I had to put that in . You know someone will make a crack at the 83 Venture. buddy
  9. Plus your family now! Have fun riding the beast,Get us some photos on your trip. buddy
  10. My 83 has the V-Max transmission runs out great,oh becarefull the 83's will pull the front tire off the ground in first gear.Lot of torque in the V-4 like having a V-Max with a fairing. Buddy But I do indeed have the second gear issue. Nothing but grinding. My question for the forum is, Will the transmission guts from an 86 1300 fit this? There's one on ebay. Thanks fellas (and ladies?) JC
  11. My radio did the same thing as yours.Mine was a bad pigtail from the battery to the unit,Would half to go up to the garage and see which color wire I worked on,I removed the pigtail and butt spliced them together,Thinking it was two wire set up?I'll check and let you know buddy
  12. where's the battery? Now that is a different look for the beast. buddy
  13. Thanks Rhncue, I did just as you said too, Fuel gauge works perfect,I get all the fuel bars now ,even shows the last bar - before going to empty .Which I have not seen in a long time.Been going off the mileage reset counter for some time now.Which itself is not good to go by when your stuck in traffic or bad weather (winds) which would take more fuel down, now I can go by my gauge.Since the 83 has no fuel reserve this makes it so much better. Bought a pencil solder & 1/16" 40/60 rosin core solder. And a lot of Praying.Worked Out Perfect. Thanks Buddy
  14. 83 Venture Standard I will be or try to anyway, repair my fuel gauge.#1 Do I need to solder the whole strip or just around the prongs,#2 Would I need more solder to do the repair or just heat up the solder already in place? If so what type of solder do I need for this board? I already have it torn down,CMS in hand. buddy
  15. The flasher relay is beside the hazard flasher in left fairing area, remove left side glove box or radio unit assembly which ever you may have, the upper air vent tube by your dash assembly follow it down and you will see both units just under the air tube mounted against the splash shield, hard to get too but you can see these two items. The flasher Cancellation unit is on the left side as well if I'm not mistaken behind the headlight area, its been some time back since I been in the left side fairing. If the cancellation unit is the problem just unplug it, you just won't have the automatic cancellation anymore. Flasher relay #2NV-83350-00-00 $61.53 Flasher cancellation unit # 1A0-83395-03-00 $66.54 http://www.flatoutmotorcycles.com http://www.dgy.com both places will treat you right. DGY gives Ventureriders a discount too. buddy
  16. Nice ain't it being able to work on your own bike, saves alot of money reading up in the forums. As for the bearings,I myself have no way of setting the torque on them .I do it the old fashion way by doing the bounce test.First make sure the front wheel is off the ground, let the handlebars go and do the bounce test left & right. If it bounces back hard off the turn stops it too loose, tighten up the bearings some more ,redo the test untill the steering just bounces back ever so slightly off the turn stops when you do this its a done deal.Done this for many years and never had any problems with them. buddy
  17. If I remember right its your caliper is causing the friction due to the wheel covers I had to install real thin shims, lucky for me I had EGR Valve shims in my toolbox some folks will know what I mean by these shims, any way once I shimed the calipers it straighten right out.If I'm right i put the shims between the forks and calipers allowing the calipers to move more toward the rotor. buddy
  18. Hey Condor, Hows the muffler order coming along? Just wanted to see how things are going on your end. Figured once folks find out that your making another order on Mac mufflers you would be ordering them pretty soon. buddy
  19. I bought a set from Condor from the first lot,let me tell you these mufflers are great, talk about sweet now these babies are sweet. The sound is awesome makes the V-4 stand out in a crowd. At red lights the mufflers are rumbling at idle and give it a slight throttle baby people will look .And when you full throttle the beast - letting it do what it does best ,it makes a sound no bike around and you will get heads turning for sure.Make Note: these are not like HD muffler sound. These mufflers has the deep tone as to say don't mess with me! Plus I went in and cleaned out my exhaust chamber which allowed more air flow, oh baby the sound is unreal with these Mac mufflers unlease the BEAST . Don't pass this up,you will reget it later on.Condor is cutting out the middle man,he's getting these at cost from the MFG and you won't find these anywhere else for this price.Check around and price the muffler's for the First Gen. that is if you can find any. Condor is not doing this for the money ,but for the Venturerider family .Your thinking?? its too good to be true.ITS GOOD AND ITS TRUE. Sorry Condor din't mean to butt in,just wanted to let folks know .Get the best from the best. buddy
  20. Sorry wrong on my brother's bike mileage,he retired his 86 Venture at 296,854 miles. And it was still running when he retired it and still had the K&N air filter that was installed at 24,541miles,reason he retired it was because the bike was getting to top heavy for his old legs so he went to a low profile V-Star.Talked to him just know on the phone we are having a family dinner tomorrow,so I asked him while we were on the phone. buddy
  21. BUY BUY BUY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You know your talking about a bullet proof motor, this is low miles,my brother put 286,000 on his before he retired it. buddy
  22. If so give me a pm I will buy her from you for sure. You already know I like that max of yours. buddy
  23. Hey frogman, Let me drive her for a while and see if the max is too loud for me. If you want I can keep it in my garage for some time, mmmm like forever. :rotf: buddy
  24. I use the Walmart brand 75w -140 just as good and not that high either.I check the final drive every oil change. So far mine has little over 10,000 miles on the gear oil and still looks good, and a lot of my driving is in the city ,and the cycle has over 71,000 miles with no leaks or noise using the 75w-140. Plus I use the same gear oil in my old ranch truck and it has well over 217,000 miles and I only remember changing it out maybe three times over its life time. buddy
  25. I would first try a different flasher as they will make the system go dead with no turn signal on either side(no lights),or they will just leave a solid light on with no flashing. should be able to use a #552 flasher which will work on most any vech.or cycle and not that high $ either. buddy
