rear diff questions
buddy replied to RustyRecycledToy's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
From what you just told me.I would go with cleaning & lubing the drive shaft and change out the Bearings, the left side bearing (Cylindrical Brg) - dealer item only - are bad about going out due to no grease. When you get your new bearing (Cylindrical) remove the MFG grease and Go back with Black grease that has (Moly)for your bearing and you will be just fine. Each time you change your tire just use your finger and work the Cylindrical bearing with new grease.Use the Moly on your drive line too. The other rear bearing is a B6304ZZ you can get these from any autoparts store the front wheel takes the same bearings as well B6304ZZ. Your bike was doing to good for the final drive to be shot - the way you was handling on those roads . WOW I just changed out my brgs before the trip and Peg added it up and we went 1,133 miles on these new brgs with no trouble using Moly grease. buddy -

ED, Do you hear anything from the driveline when its on the center stand?I remeber you saying your buddy could hear something from your bike going down the road while riding beside you?sorry forgot his name. How does the final drive oil look like?black and chunky or clear and brownish color? ED if you need to replace your final drive I have one from a 86 or 87 setting in my garage somewhere.still in good shape I had it on my 83 last year but went back with my V-Max final drive which I had for this past trip. buddy -

I have the standard hitch on mine which is a Harbor freight with a diamond plate toolbox, have no troubles at all so far.I can turn just fine in town or on hwy.Later on I would like to get one only because if I lay the bike down the swivel hitch will save the frame work from bending but for now I'll keep on going which is around 1,250 mi on trailer,we will be taking it to Eureka Springs Ark. this weekend. Buddy

Sorry Frogman, Had to pull off the Kenda Kruz for the trip to Ark. The tires do well on the bike but once I hooked up the trailer, the bike went nuts.Could not hold it steady on the road lowered the psi in the rear tire which seemed to help - 32psi, but I could still feel the rearend sway.So I went back with the Elite 2,now I can go 70mph with the trailer with no problems at all so much better.I have to say one thing is the Kenda tire does have a much smoother ride than the Elite 2. Kenda Kruz are ok for your bike for cruising, but for me they are not made for pulling trailers. Buddy

The last thing I want to do is steal a thread, but since we are talking about frame work on 83's.Has there been any recalls in the past on the frames?like the goldwings. If so can we check by vin#? for history. I asked the local dealer and he said I don't know. buddy

The beast left us sitting on the side of the hwy going to Alabaster Caverns in Northern Okla. earlier this year.First thing I thought of was the kickstand due to so many talking how it would kill the motor going down the road.So I unhooked the pigtail from the kickstand sensor and jumped all three wires to each other and it started right up,and is still hooked this way no problems. Try jumping the three wires together in the pigtail and see how it does.? hope it is something simple. Buddy

Mine has 75,000 miles on Synthetic oil Amsoil 10w40 & Mobil 1. 15w50.Synthetic oil works best for my bike ,better shifting - cooler temp - smoother ride. I changed my clucthes at 65,000 - maintance only, and the ones I took out looked just like the new ones still in great shape.Matter of fact I still have my old ones in the garage as back up if I ever need them. But like I said everybody has their choice of oil.My brother retired his bike with over 250,000 miles useing castrol 20w50 dino oil.The main thing is maintance on the motor and you will do just fine. Buddy
-
Hello Paru, First off how many miles on your bike? Reason I ask is most older bikes with mid or high miles tend to leak with syn.oil. I myself use Amsoil 10w40 which is full syn.oil along with some others out there,my beast has just turned 75,000 miles which is low miles for these motors but its been with amsoil & mobil 1 most of its life. Members here use and get good reviews on these below. mobil 1 rotella T Diesel oil castrol Valvoline racing others will chime in and give you some ideas as well good luck and welcome to the family Buddy

Dielectric grease ! Thats the name I could not get,my mind shuts down when I leave work.So when Peg talks to me I say HUH? Thanks Bongobobny -
Ok I finally made it to the dealer and bought the two rear bearings for the 83 Venture,By looking at the packages they look older than me and the grease is all caked and the grease has the old smell to it ,so I'M going to clean these tomorrow at work and repack them. Going to use Black Moly grease with a grease needle on these bearings is this good enough for them or is there some other grease that works better especially on the Cylindrica bearing?Any special way of repacking the cylindrica brg. Thanks buddy

For me it was my TCI unit the plugins were getting wet causing all the trouble,I clean the connections and put on some white electrial grease what ever you call it sorry I tired today. Its is bolted on the bottom side of the battery box. Buddy -
Condor, Did you forget to do this part ? :rotf: I DID. I been there and done that, Rats where were you when I had mine out. Buddy

Bought my hitch off of E-Bay,which was kinda warped, I straighten it out the best I could not bad either once installed, but the right side vertical bar is slightly closer to the tire than the vertical left bar Right vertical bar is about 1'' from the wheel left one is about 1 1/2 to 2'' away but works just fine for me have no trouble with trailer. ? Vertical bars or Horizontal bars ? buddy

Newbie with lame questions
buddy replied to a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
When it comes to gravel roads and tour bikes - do not mix very well.I have not seen any large bike's handle gravel roads good.I myself live on a gravel road and I live at the bottom of the hill.So its fun everyday riding up & down the hill,I take it real easy and very slow.As for your front end check and see what size tire you have,May be wrong size tire?.I have 120/90-18 on the front, handles great,Also check psi and see where it is.Just guessing on this part since we donot know the exact problem or feel your having. And as for the handling of the bike I love mine very much,I go riding with my coworkers on weekends when we get the chance, and they hate it when it comes to corners or curves I lean the beast over untill I feel the pegs touching and give it the gas coming out and leave them behind - Nice. And the power is out of this world for these tour bikes. The mileage on your bike is low so have fun and put on another 200,000 miles. Buddy -
You can get to the dash assembly by removing the windshield assembly and headlight cover then head light itself you do not need to remove headlight frame work just head light this way you can get your hand behind all the wiring and frame work, the dash has four screws two on each side, loosen two screws on each side plus removing two on each side then the dash cover will side toward the handle bars leaving behind the dash assembly ,once these are out of the way you can get better access to the bolts on the backside and also helps removing the speedometer cable .Since your in there its best you lube the cable while you have it apart. If I missed any tips there will be more family members here to help out buddy

I like your set up very much, plus your brake light real nice setup.Never thought of working off my hitch assembly.Where did you get your brake light. Photos are great too.I like the way you set it up plus saved youself so much money too.I was thinking the same thing about the Rivco setup could not see spending that much money. buddy

I finally put on the Kenda Kruz tires. The tires been in the spare bedroom, finally got around to putting them on, I was just too lazy at the time.Real nice tires Really good for what little money I spent on them.Front tire was a breeze putting on,but the rear tire ,man that one was a pain in the rear.Hardest tire I ever put on ,the sidewall on this tire is real stiff I never seen one this hard putting on,had my son helping too.Took almost an hour just putting on the tire. But it sure did pay off. These tires made the Venture a whole new bike as for handling and smooth ride.I took off the Venom dint like the feel of the tires at hwy speeds, any time over 70mph the Venom would walk, but these Kenda Kruz are the way to go. Thanks Frogman I been looking at these tires for some time but kinda wonder if they were any good since they are so low of $ tire. When I seen that they did so good for you I figured why not.Glad I did I really like these tires. These tires should last me for a while. Rear tire has 11/32 tread Front tire has 7/32 tread Buddy

Will this tranny fit in my 83?
buddy replied to a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
My 83 has the V-Max transmission works great for me.I lucked out on this one the first owner replaced it year before i bought it.runs just fine,But I'm like Yammer Dan I don't have the spec's on the transmission for when Yamaha up graded them. I agree with Condor,Kinda steep on this transmision but if you want a V-Max trans. go fo it. buddy -
Quick Question, maybe
buddy replied to matt73ander's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Hello Matt73ander, On my 83 I can get around 170mi before refueling.Fuel gauge - last bar on my 83 I'll have at least 1 1/2 gal. or a little more left in the tank.Run some seafoam in the fuel system - whole can with fill up won't hurt the cycle and run the dog out of it some, these motors run best in higer rpm's.Goodluck with your new beast the 83's are the badest of all the Ventures. The meanest one belongs to YammerDan The BlueBeast. Have fun and run it good,When I first got my bike I could only get 115-130 mi out of the bike, I went with seafoam on several tanks of fuel and ran the dog out of it now I can get around 170 maybe more but I play it safe.91 octane will do you no good stay with 89 octane and use seafoam every other fill up untill it runs smoother, tune your carbs - chk plugs - chk wires - may just need a good old fashion seafoam treatment. buddy- 16 replies
