OK, you have me curious enough to ask about a right side lean stand. I've never heard of that. Is it your invention? Inquiring minds want to know.

I have heard the epoxy gas tank sealer from Caswell Electroplating works better than Kreem. I have never used either, just passing it on.

Can a Brother get a hand?

While on the subject of changing the 1st gen oil filtre, I have not changed mine yet. Is there a good place to get them for a reasonable price and what would the part number be? -
Stebel horns to replace OEM
camos replied to Tony1M's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I have the Stebel Magnums on my Virago. They are plastic and do not weigh very much. I'm going to assume I have the stock horns in their original position on my VR and there should be no problem installing the Magnums in their place. I'm planning on putting some on this Winter. Oh yes, they sound good and I like them. Here is a pic of them on my Virago: http://viragotechforum.com/phpBB/album_pic.php?pic_id=5278 -
headlight re-visited

I understand your point, this bike is the first one I have had to deal with the complexities of a computer and all the other gadjets and comcomitant wiring. It's kinda overwhelming. I'm in the process of inspecting all the wiring and cleaning connections. Haven't gotten to the computer and don't have any known issues so did not want to pull it although probably should to make sure the harness sockets are clean. This headlight issue caught my attention and it seems to be more complicated than necessary and thought a few questions now might be useful in the future if, or is it when, something related comes up. Thanks for the reply, guess I'll just hang on, keep cleaning and perhaps have a look at it when working in the area. -
MkII rear suspension rods

When bolts or shafts are seized some careful heat around the perimeter first before applying some penetrating oil often helps. If a hammer is required to provide more pursuasion, using a brass drift to hammer on is much safer. -
headlight re-visited

Hmm, just remembered 87a is normally closed wihen the relay powers up 87. In any event running a lead to the coil from 87 would do as intended. Is this topic not of much interest or is everyone who knows something about the way the computer monitor works out touring? -

I'm sure there are lots of competent guys on here. I'm just asking questions so I can understand better how my new to me Venture operates. I was not thinking of messing with the PCB. If all the current to the light goes through the coil, presumeably coming from the switch, then I was thinking the supply from the switch to the coil could energize a relay with 87 going to the light and 87a going to the coil with the original supply line from the coil to the light going to ground. Perhaps that won't work but from the description you gave it is a possibility worth exploring. -
Before dismantling anything I would first spray some WD40 in the linkage to wash out any crud in there then put some better oil in it. If that doesn't work then consider more intrusive checks.

Oh, so the sensor coil needs to be in series with the headlight to work. The coil and reed switch setup seems like it might be a basic relay, keep in mind I don't know much about my VR yet. If that is the case then wiring the coil to the relay and then to ground should activate the sensor. Is that possible? -
Cut Down Stock Windshield
camos replied to GaryZ's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
My VR is not roadworthy yet so I've only ridden it around a parking lot a few times. My xv1100 has a rather large windshield/fairing on it which should be just as relevant. The top of the windshield is even with my lips so I can see over it just fine and there is no buffeting experienced. While adjusting the height, when the top was closer to the level of my chin there was some buffeting. Seems there is a small window of opportunity available to look over without getting battered. Oh yes, I should add that I usually ride with my face shield up and only need to put it down when it's raining.- 12 replies

Building on what Gary said, where does the sensor hook up to tell the computer the headlight is on? Could the sensor be hooked up to the power side of the relay? -
The spaces between the lobes on the armature can become gobbed up and create dead spots. Along with new brushes cleaning the slots can rejuvenate many starters.

Weird charging issue
camos replied to ScottXD45's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I have not gotten into the wiring system on my Venture very much yet but on my Virago the factory ground from the neg terminal is to the engine only. Connecting copper to aluminum is a source of corrosion so that connection needs lots of maintenance to prevent it from degrading. The engine connections to the frame are something that would rarely, if ever, be cleaned up. Many Virago owners have found that adding a second ground from the neg terminal to the frame makes things work better. -
There is a test of various oils on the Amsoil site that might be of interest. These tests have been done on Royal Purple Max-Cycle and Valvoline 4-stroke among others.

Boy I can just imagine the confusion that Smart Switch could cause me while driving down a dark country road. Does the switch need to be flipped 2 times or three times to get the right combo? Damn, can't remember. Seems kinda dark, must have been just one flip. Well perhaps it won't be that difficult but two $6 switches versus one $42 switch... hmmmm.... Thanks for the info, always good to know what is available.
-
Good info. First would have cleaned the battery terminals then checked the ground to the block. Now I have the magical third check.
-
Thanks for the explanation of 87a. Looks like one way or the other two relays are needed to make two sets of lights work properly with the Hi/Lo beams.
-
What does 87a do? I have fog lights on my Virago wired through a switched relay as you also described. On the VR there are driving lights but I'd like to add fog lights switced to work with the Hi/Lo beams. If the Hi beam powers the relay for the Hi beam driving light combo, what powers the relay for the Lo beam fog light combo?

Any Ideas as to popping when off the throttle
camos replied to Brian D.'s topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Your mods increased the air flow resulting in a slightly lean condition which causes the popping. To fix it you will need to richen up the fuel delivery. -
Help, wifes Virago is using a lot of oil
camos replied to raceman62race's topic in General Tech Talk
Have you checked for an oil weep/leak from the bottom of the oil filtre cover? The bottom bolt has an o-ring on it that does on occasion get lost/forgotten. Pulling the bottom bolt out can also abrade the o-ring so it does not work very well after a few/many filtre changes. The level should be no higher than about 1/8 inch down from the top of the window, any higher and oil will get burned off. If the oil level is in the middle of the window the oil level sensor (not pressure) light will tend to come on quite often when cold, when going up a steep hill and even during strong acceleration. -
Seems to me the Smart car is a step up or perhaps sideways from a trike. Kinda like a motorcycle with 4 wheels that can keeps you out of the rain. They should be driven with as much care as one would ride a motorcycle. Also an alternative when it is too slippery to ride the bike. Took one for a test drive a couple of months ago. I don't know if it has been changed with the gas version for the US but the diesel version for Canada has an evil electronic manumatic transmission which has a 1 or 2 second delay when throttling up from a stop. My Mary Jean really wanted one until she drove it. I think it is something that one could work around or get used to. Whatever the pluses and minuses, the Smart cars do have a "cuteness factor" that I find very appealing.

Seems like the classic poor ground connection from the battery, neg passes voltage but not much amperage. Might help knowing 750 what. If it is a Virago then they are well known for gobbing up the ground connection at the engine. Lots of people recommend putting a second ground from the battery to the frame. Leaving any bike for 5-6 months outside is bound to get corroded connections.
