Been wondering for a while whether feet forward or feet under would be more comfortable for touring. I've seen quite a number of comments that Gen 2 are more comfortable than Gen 1. In what way are they more comfortable? There are a lot of people who have gone from Cruiser style forward controls to Sport Touring bikes with controls under or even further back than Gen 1 and find them better. Seems to me sitting with your weight more on your thighs would be more comfortable than with it on your tailbone. This is a serious question and not intended to stir up any controversy. Of course, a little controversy is always a bonus.

Does anyone else have these problems?
camos replied to SpaceMan's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Not too sure this relates to your #4 problem but thought I'd throw it out for consideration. When I first got my Virago when driving a straight line down the road the handlebars were not centred. More of an annoyance than a problem as the bike still steered where I wanted to go. Got a couple of straight 2x4's to make sure the front wheel was aligned with the back wheel and found the handlebars were out about 1/2". Loosened the tripletree fork clamps, straddled the front wheel and torqued the handlebars until they were square with the wheel. Tightened the clamps and no more annoyance. Doing that is probably a bit more difficult on a Venture though. If your problem is the same as the one I had then I would think the fairing being attached to the handlebars (yes/no?) would also be out a bit which would be fairly noticeable. -
You can use Apple's free iTunes to get songs onto your computer from a CD. Just save them in MP3 format then upload to your MP3 player. There are others of course but that is the one I use on my media centre for playing music. Publishing music is about making money. Free downloads do not make money for anyone. I am doubtful there are any free music sites that will not have the potential to get you into trouble. There is quite a selection of "free" music on torrent peer to peer sites. If you don't know about torrents, just google "torrents" to get a handle on them.

Headlight Upgrade
camos replied to Locomotive's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
On the highway, those really white lights coming at me are at the best annoying and at the worst blinding. I don't like them and as a result don't think I should be putting them on and doing the same to someone else. Been thinking about trying the ones below but have been kinda stalling since the reviewers both mention them being best for inclement weather. Anyone have any experience or even an opinion on the yellow lights? The Ion Crystal puts out an amber/yellow light that's less reflective than white light to greatly reduce the amount of glare in extreme fog or blizzard-like conditions. Greater definition in snow makes this a superior snowmobile headlight bulb. Bulb Type: H4 Anti-Vibration Wattage: 60/55W=110/100W Color Temp: 2500 Kelvin -

To prevent that kind of thing from happening in the future you could go into your profile and set the sort option to have the latest post at the top of the thread. About the only down side I have found is :sign yeah that:points the wrong way. Something I was thinking about the other day and just thought it might be a useful point to throw out for consideration. This GB had two threads going for a while which was a bit confusing. Could there be a separate forum for GB's to take place? Might make it easier to track them. -
Battery for first gen?
camos replied to elag's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
This is the first thing that should be done when experiencing any possible electrical malfunction before chasing individual components. The stock wiring is adequate only if all connections are functioning well. Adding a second or more grounds could help but is essentially just treating a symptom that could also be treated by cleaning the original. Upgrading to a larger wire gauge is definitely a good idea but is not necessary and what it mostly does is give clean connections which can be attained without spending any money. I can't remember the number of times I have seen people chasing/replacing "faulty" components like plugs, coils, carbs, stator, R/R and the TCI with no lasting solution to the problem. Eventually finding a bad connection to one of those components was the real culprit. Food for thought. -
Seems to me Ontario figures it is Canada and the rest of us are just mugs.

Battery for first gen?
camos replied to elag's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
How long ago did you upgrade the cables. Seems like a case of corroded and/or dirty connections, not necessarily just from/to the battery. Go over the starter circuit, charging circuit, ignition circuit and TCI connectors with contact cleaner and a green scrubby. Put them back together and coat with dielectric grease or silicon spray. I would suggest doing that and checking the cells with a hydrometer before considering battery replacement. -
We all know it was a great idea you had Tim. Still a bummer to have it ripped off. Perhaps you are expecting too much from your lights. The beams from fog lamps mounted low are not meant to extend beyond the low beam and should actually be somewhat less. Fog lamps have a wide beam while driving lights have a narrow beam. Fog lights can be on all the time. Driving lights are not particularly good for near or side lighting and should be turned off with the high beams. Fog lamp aim at 25 feet measured down from installed height axis Up to 18" (46 cm) 1.5" (38 mm) 18.5" to 28" (47-71 cm) 3" (76 mm) 28.5" or higher (72 cm) 4" (102 mm) axis = centre

I'd like to run amber fogs all the time too but wanted to be sure the Pilots would not be too much for the charging system to handle. If siliconed to waterproof them, how are the LEDs cooled? Looks like those amber ones throw an impressive amount of light. For me I definitely want a fog light pattern and I gather the projector lens focuses the light. If they started out as fogs then the same pattern should be maintained. This is a very cool project you have started here.

I have a set of 55w Pilot fogs on my Virago that I like and have been thinking of putting the same ones on my VR. There are no other electrical accessories on the Virago and the two @ 110w have not adversly affected the charging system for the past two months that they have been used but that is only at night. The Virago stator is rated at 16 amps, can't remember what the Venture stator is rated at. I'm still a bit leary about running them all the time on the Virago and the VR is not on the road yet. The Pilot fogs are H3s, what type of bulb can the LEDs replace?

I'm with you Ken, there have been studies that rate cell phone use equal to driving drunk. Even the hands off transmit is dangerous. I believe using a cell phone while driving should be grounds for losing your drivers license as it is for DUI. I wonder if intercoms would be rated similarly. That said, I don't own a cell phone but do occasionally wish I did. There is also the safety aspect of carrying one which makes it a good thing to have a long. Nothing like a couple of ambivalent statements to confuse things eh?

Indian regulator/rectifier group buy
camos replied to Dano's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I wondered about sending the payment in US or Cdn funds but went with Cdn because the shipping was different. I did consider doing a conversion on the latest rate but since that could change in an hour or a day decided not to. For future group buys it might be a good idea for a US based organizer to give the costs delivered to Canada in US funds. Sorry to be bringing this up after the proverbial horse has gotten out of the barn. -

Hey Dano: My original order was for one but I bumped it up to two and that was what I paid you for. The list here only shows one for me. Just wanted to make sure the second one did not get lost in all the paperwork you have to keep track of. Thanks. -
Blew main fuse
camos replied to Venturous Randy's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Or, when was the last time you cleaned the terminal connections? Dirty or corroded terminals add resistance which increases the circuit load which equals more amperage for each cruddy connection. Not just on the high side but could also be the ground end. -
removing collector
camos replied to chocking's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Well that's a bit disappointing, the article mentioned getting better breathing so I was hoping to get a bit more growl out of the stock exhaust too. I might do it this Winter anyway just to see what happens. Thanks Clay. -
removing collector
camos replied to chocking's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
What does removing the baffles from the collector do to the sound of the exhaust? -
When it comes to pilot screw adjustments, 2 1/2 turns out is not a particularly magic number. That number of turns out is only broadly meant to get the motor running. Fine tuning by 1/4 or 1/8 turns from there to find the sweet spot. Do one carb at a time turning in or out as it may require until hearing a roughness in the engine then turn it back 1/8 turn should get to the right spot. The pilot jet sets the air/fuel mix for the idle circuit. For this adjustment to be most effective the carbs need to be in sync and clean with no gobbed up o-rings. If the adjustment is way off the 2 1/2 turns then there are at the very least, minor problems with the air or fuel delivery. I think more often than not, some crud and somewhat degraded o-rings cause over compensation when adjusting the pilot jets. Cheers Clive

Looks to me like the left hand ones are good while the right hand ones are not. Light tan is a good colour, white usually means lean. Assuming that is, you are burning gasoline and not alcohol. I haven't come to terms yet with a high percentage of alcohol.- 5 replies

Former "brakes" post saved me...
camos replied to CdnDave77's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I still have a lot to learn about Ventures, thanks for setting me straight randya. If that is the case then I have no ideas on why anyone would overfill a brake reservoir. -
Former "brakes" post saved me...
camos replied to CdnDave77's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
When I got my VR The M/C was filled to above the window so no level could be seen. It was very clear and looked like there may have been no fluid in it. The day after getting it home, I started the bike and the brake warning light came on so I opened up the M/C and it was indeed over full. Turned out the rear reservoir was down. My suspicion is that when the warning came on the PO added fluid to the front system which may have bled through to the rear enough to turn off the warning. I wonder how often that happens. If the M/C is level, there is no point in adding fluid above 1/2 - 2/3 up the window. -
Former "brakes" post saved me...
camos replied to CdnDave77's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
From what I have heard this situation can easily occur if the M/C is over filled. There is a flexible reservour gasket that give some space for expansion and after that is used up the system begins to pressurize. Without the dramatic event you endured, it can just wear the brakes out in half the time. -
Can a Brother get a hand?
camos replied to GuthDaddy17's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Thanks for the pn. I had to get the first filtre for my Virago from the dealer for almost $18 cuz non of the other outlets listed one for motorcycles. Been using Rotella-T from Walmart, seems to be a decent oil for a reasonable price.
