Model by Vin ? Help Please
camos replied to asigetic's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Not that I have had any experience working on a Venture but I've been reading the forums for quite a while. Yesterday I removed my '90 VR from storage, where it has been sitting for over a year, and rode it to my workshop. I am about to embark on the same journey you are. Mine runs, you did not indicate whether yours does or not. I stored it with Seafoam in the tank and had it on a float charger and it fired up first try. What happened during the time in storage is the display stopped functioning. Also, when I got it there was a problem with the neutral light and gear display shutting off after warming up. Those two things are first on my list. The lack of neutral light and gear display are symptoms of poor connections in the switch located inside the left cover. There could be other causes but that is the most common one and is supposed to be a fairly easy fix. The faulty computer display is also most commonly caused by poor connections. This one is apparently a bit of a headache to fix since it requires removal of the fairing to get at the computer and likely will need re-soldering of the connection joints. Check all wires for signs of overheating and clean all connections. Pay particular attention to the battery terminals and neg to ground connection. Clean what is there, neg term to engine, and add a second ground from the neg term to the frame using a #8 wire or larger. Changing "all" fluids is a good thing to do with an unknown history and is reasonably easy to do. If it's running OK, inspect the fuel tank for rust caused by condensation and change the fuel filtre. Cut the filtre open looking for signs of rust will also aid in assessing the state of the tank. Don't forget to check the fuel lines for swollen or punky rubber. If the engine runs but not properly, the carb's may be gobbed up with varnish. Drain the tank of any old fuel inspect tank and replace with a half tank of fresh fuel and half a can of Seafoam. If you can't get Seafoam in your area use about 4 oz any brand of camp fuel which is just naptha. This should clear up minor blockages in the carb's otherwise a tear down will likely be needed. Assuming the Mark I VR's have one, does the class system hold pressure? To make it work the ignition must be off and in the ACC position. There is more but that will be a very good start. The 1st gen Ventures are mostly the same but there are some specific differences between '83 and later Mark I and also between '86 and later Mark II. So do take the time to put the year and model of your bike in your profile. Doing so will be helpful to others in answering your questions.- 9 replies

I had a look on the Ride for Dad website and could not find any mention of the poker run route. Doesn't matter much where it goes to I guess. Last year was great weather but the forecast is not so great this year. With the large number of participants I think it will be a bit difficult meeting up with people one has never met and have no idea what they look like. Anyway, unless you have a better idea than I do, I'll be on my black and white xv1100 which doesn't look much like a Virago anymore although it does still have the pods and is also decidedly scruffy at this point which should make it fairly recognizable. Also, if it's raining I'll be wearing my grey Teknic waterproof textile jacket. If you see an unfashionably dressed rider on such a unique bike it will probably be me.

The Ride for Dad is an all day event, in two parts. The parade in the morning and a cruise somewhere for the afternoon. I'll be on my Virago.

This year's Motorcycle Ride for Dad for Vancouver Island is on this coming Sunday. Is anyone in the area besides me going to attend? Would be nice to hook up if possible.

This has not been substantiated but apparently it is made with high density rigid polyethylene. Here is a how to repair using a kayak as an example. http://www.kayak-repair-central.com/plastic-repair.html

Are you getting a qualified electrician to do the other wiring. You know, the kind that get "electrical permits" and finish with "electrical inspections". Anyway, electrical wholesalers will most likely have the wire for less than small box retailers. Don't forget to wire in a data line and an Internet connection to your router.

There are a number of DVD's available from Ride Like a Pro. See their site here: http://www.ridelikeapro.com/store/instructional-dvds/browse/6-dvds?sef=hc

Given the choice I will always pick the Postal Service but some companies will only ship by one of the courier services. Mostly it doesn't make much difference in Canada but it's significant when getting goods from the USA. FedEx and UPS both have charged me brokerage fees of $25-$30 while USPS has never done that. That amount of money almost negates the value of buying online from abroad.

I wondered if the yellow adapter would come out, didn't want to start prying on it if it would just break. The good news is I had a spare and got the R/R installed in my Virago and it works great. I'll give it a shot tomorrow and hopefully will have a complete spare unit for my VR. Thanks for the timely advice. Very much appreciated. -

Despite Tim's good explanation and pic that displayss everything very well... I managed to reverse the pos and neg wires going into the connector. The problem is I can't get the pins out of the connector to change them over. Anyone know how to do this? -
What about this: http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/4/Auto/Towing/Trailers/PRDOVR~0408087P/Snowbear%252BElite%252BSeries%252B4.5-ft%252Bx%252B4%252Bft.%252BTrailer.jsp?locale=en and this: http://www.canadiantire.ca/AST/browse/4/Auto/VehicleAccessories/CartopCarriers/PRD~0401064P/SportRack%252B18%252Bcu.%252BFt.%252BEnclosed%252BCar-top%252BCarrier.jsp?locale=en Will require a minor amount of work but it's in your price range. Might be able to pick them up used.

Seems to me #18 wire is a bit on the skinny side for a 30 amp circuit. I'm glad you mentioned it though since I didn't even think about the size of wire having to fit through the plugs. I already updated the fuse from the glass tube to an ATO type. Both the main fuse and the spare's glass tubes broke while I was trying to get the holder apart to check what was causing the lack of ignition. They were both probably 1996 vintage and pretty much just fell apart. -

Mounting in the pod will be much easier on the Virago than under the seat which is already full of relays and connectors. Could still be in a bit of a pickle though as the left pod is where I planned to mount the ballast for the HID headlight. Have to do a temp mount of both units before I'll know for sure. @ Snaggletooth: What wire gauge were you thinking of using? The stock is probably #14 off a 30 amp fuse although it might be #12 with thinner insulation. -

The R/R on my xv1100 quit working properly a few weeks ago. It was putting out 11.5 v which kept the battery somewhat charged and with the help of a charger it was able to manage my daily commute. On Sunday last the stock R/R gave up the ghost and blew the main fuse. Today I looked into installing the Shindegen mentioned here. The only place with any airflow it possibly could be mounted is under the seat but that position may not be very weather tight. The only other place available is in the left pod that used to contain the AIS. That position is reasonably weather tight but there is not much if any airflow. Anyone got any thoughts on this little conundrum? What's more important, airflow or weatherproof? -
Thanks for the link. I had seen it before but was not sure which patch we were referring to. I like the other patch better and think it would be perfect if VR.org was an option for it.

How did you ever come up with that meaning? Everyone knows that RTFM = Read The Fine Manual. Everyone does know that.... right?

My mounts arrived today. They look great. Thanks a lot for all the effort you have put into setting this up for us.

Dang, like that's going to happen.

The Westbound vehicle is the one on the right. I got the deer one wrong. I don't think there would be time to make the choice of hitting it at an angle although if there was time I would be aiming for it's rear end which would probably put me on an angle. I'm also pretty sure that at the time I would not give a rat's ass about minimizing damage to the animal. It would be all about saving me. The double hazard sign got me. The cab and trailer in the rear view mirror I disagree with. If I can see the cab, not just the grill, then that is enough clearance for me. The centre line is a 2-way turn lane, never a passing lane. Do I need re-education?

Just tried the IE version 8 that comes with Win7 and the cheeseburger Rolodex works fine on the very wet coast of Victoria.
