  1. Rick, I haven't been to the dealer yet. Just though I would ask about other sources first. Kevin, anyone local you prefer? I've been to the dealer, SG Power, a few times and most always leave feeling skinned. I prefer Adrenalin and Victoria Motorcycle but don't know if they can get OEM type parts.
  2. I need to fix the gear indicator and have read in the tech section that I will probably need new gaskets and O-ring. Is there a good place to get them in Canada?

    Dremel

There are actually two straight mandrels in the kit with different size end screws. Good idea, if a tool is difficult to use it will not likely be used often. Not to mention, I can see me fumbling that screw and losing it without too much difficulty. I think that would be very useful too... added to my look out for it list.

Hmm, I didn't see it and every part has it's own spot in the tool box. There are a lot of parts in the kit that require a naked spindle so there must be one. I better have a close look. There is a diamond cut-off wheel and drill in the kit but no work light. So far I have only used the tool with the flexible extension and a light on the motor wouldn't be any help. Seems very handy though, hang the motor on the bike and work with the extension. Only took a couple of minutes to clean off the previous patch material from the tab. Bought some Q-Bond last Friday and will hopefully get time to fix a few broken bits on the VR tomorrow.

Hah! I knew it would be something obvious that I had missed. Never even noticed that little screw. Perhaps that is also the answer to a question I had not asked yet. There are also grinding wheels and sanding discs in the kit. Do they mount to the end of the sanding drum using the same screw? Thanks for your help.

    Dremel

I finally bought a dremel kit, mainly to fix a few broken tabs on the fairing but I'm sure it will be very useful for other things too. What's up with the drum sander bit? There is a rubberish drum on an armature and some sanding tubes that apparently slide on the drum. There is nothing I can see that will hold the tubes in place and even light pressure makes them slide up or down. Obvious or not, what am I missing?
  7. For an islander that would be $113 minus the cost of the ferry = $13 saved. I ordered some E3 tires for my Virago and a few other things a while ago which were all shipped to Washington for free. Went over on the ferry to pick them up and stayed for a few days of sightseeing. Didn't save anything but it paid for my trip so I figure I came out ahead.
  8. Here is another non answer to your question and perhaps even worse, it's a question. Anyway, why not buy the tires online and have them shipped to Cody for installation? Cross border shipping for tires is a killer.
  9. A Throttle Rocker came with my Virago. I only used it occasionally when taking a longer trip and would take it off whenever I left the bike out of sight for any length of time. Mostly I just commute and don't go anywhere so the Rocker sat in my house. After a few years, I found it in a drawer and thought what's the point of having it if I never use it. So I put it on. Three days later I was at the municipality paying my taxes, came out to find a guy on a Harley in the next stall over. We chatted about this and that then he left. Then I left and don't you know the Rocker was gone. It's gospel, lock it or lose it.
  10. I just did all the cables on my Virago today. The only cable that will need oil on the Venture is for the choke. No special tool is needed although shops may use a cable luber it isn't necessary. A piece of stiff paper or light cardboard or thin plastic like from a milk jug. A small 1 1/2" or so piece wrapped around the sheath to form a funnel then taped tight works like a charm. Use just a dribble of clean motor oil. Put a cloth under the lower end of the cable to catch the oil that makes it to the far end.
  11. When I had the circuit board out, to my untrained eye the solder traces and joints looked smooth with no cracks. What about checking continuity to see if there is a cold joint that doesn't look bad? Is it difficult to figure out which trace connects to the plug terminal? Or is that not a good idea? Gary are you suggesting running the iron along the traces to resolder them or just redoing the wires that poke through? Under the circumstances with the bike just sitting on it's center stand for a year or so I'm kinda doubtful that a solder joint is a likely cause. To me the most vulnerable and therefore most likely cause would be oxidation or corrosion at a ground connection somewhere. I still haven't found where the neg term of the battery is connected to the frame or engine. Do I need to remove the fairing to find all the ground connections?
  12. I got the CMU panel out and the LCD display and examined the circuit board. Everything looked clean with no indication of corrosion and nothing on the circuit board looked cooked or at all unusual. Hooked all the connections together but no joy, the red warning light is lit and the backlight for the display is lit and the neutral light is lit however still no output from the display. I've never been particularly good at soldering so I'm hesitant to try soldering the display circuit board without having a good reason to do it. While in storage the display worked properly over the course of about a year. A couple of months after I had last looked at it, the display was not working. Something happened while it was just sitting there. Could there be a fuse or possibly a bad ground connection somewhere that would disable all the readouts without cutting all the power to the CMU? I'm under the gun if I want to get this thing working so I can attend Cody.
  13. I'm not sure if we got our wires crossed and you probably know this but anyway, iTunes will sync with the iPod but essentially only one way. Whatever music, playlist arrangement is on the computer gets transferred to the iPod. Music cannot be transferred from the iPod to the computer. Kinda annoying but solved by 3rd party software that will download the music directly to your computer. The music can then be put back into iTunes or not, as you wish. Pretty much what I said before but thought I'd clarify. Thanks for the link to Floola, it does more than the software I purchased and is free. Very cool.
  14. I don't know anything about the FJ1300 but came across this article about the local police choosing the Honda ST1300 over the FJR1300, among others. http://www.roadrunner.travel/article-5893.php Not too much detail there but you might find it to be of some help.
  15. Oh, should have guessed. MLO is certainly easier to spell than dielectric grease.
  16. Well that makes sense with the plug being so obstinate the solder joints probably get torqued while removing. If they weren't cracked already they probably are now.
  17. A squirt of WD40 worked wonders in getting the connectors to wiggle enough to rock them apart. Non of the connectors looked the least bit corroded. Never heard of MLO.

    Virago's

The rear cylinder runs hotter because it does not get as much airflow as the front one. The needles in the carbs are supposed to be different sizes to supply more fuel to to help cool the back cylinder. I've read of people changing to a gravity feed when their fuel pump quits. Don't know much about it but seem to recall doing that only sort works and getting down below a 1/4 tank will also cause starvation to the back carb, I think, which will cause it to cut out. Make sure the fuel line is routed straight as possible to aid in fuel flow. I've never heard of this issue with carb kits, perhaps Yamaha is clearing out old stock that they can't get rid of any other way. It might be Yamaha dealers or just a dealer doing it though. I'd be looking for the proper kit.
  19. The difficulty separating the plugs was overcome by using WD40 and all the CMU wire connectors looked good but I sprayed them with electrical cleaner anyway. I now have the LCD display out of the CMU. Could a blown fuse be the cause of no LCD display? The warning light is the only thing that lights up when the ignition is on. Looked at this thread on the CMU removal and soldering on a MK1: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=33328 Hopefully it is the same as doing it on a MK2. Is it the strips indicated that need to be soldered or the connections (bumps)?
  20. Not sure what you mean here but iTunes will not download music from an iPod, it will only upload to it. Which means if for any reason you lose the music on your computer you can't rescue it from your iPod. Unless of course you buy some relatively inexpensive 3rd party software that will allow you to download from the iPod. I found this out when I had a HD crash with all my music on it. Can't remember what the software is that I got but it was about $12 from FutureShop about 6 years ago. Haven't needed it since. At home I play all my music with iTunes on my Windows Media Center. It will take music files from a CD or DVD and convert them to .mp3 format and save them to the HD. Initially I got iTunes because I got an iPod but found it worked great and was free. I'm sure there are other apps that will do the same just as well but it works for me and I like the way it does it. I prefer Windows and the only things I have from Apple is the iPod and iTunes.
  21. Practicing what has already been mentioned will get you there but in the mean time when you need to put a foot down because you have lost your balance make it a quick dab then back on the peg. Put your foot down forward and and the bike's motion will bring your leg to vertical by the time you lift it. Otherwise your foot can get caught up in the kick stand or saddle bags. You may also find a little body "English" will help fine tune your balance.
  22. That's the method I was using to do it but since it wouldn't budge I did wonder if there was something that I could not see that was holding it together. Now that I know there isn't I'll apply more patience, some WD40 and perhaps some pliers. Sometimes it is the little things in life that cause an inordinate amount of grief. Thanks skydoc.
  23. So I got the CMU loose but I'm having difficulty getting the plugs out of the back to release it completely. They don't seem to want to budge. Is there some trick to unplugging them?
  24. Very timely post and will probably be helpful to asigetic as well. This afternoon I started to clean up the connections around the battery area then pulled the windshield off and started looking around for the way to remove the front fairing. Got stumped - duh - so I came in here to read the manual on how to proceed. Got a feeling the fairing might have to come off to get at the rest of the connectors I can see but can't reach. For now though I just have to figure out how to get the headlight off. Thanks for the heads up.
  25. You don't really need to ask for his address. Click on one of the pix of the bike in the garage then click on the "i" button, scroll down to the bottom for the LAT/LONG and enter that into google and you know where he lives. Interesting little feature of phone cameras don't you think?
