I don't know if a running vehicle will cause damage but since there no need to have it running when jumping a motorcycle, I always make sure it is off. I'm still kinda new to actually using my Venture but I would have thought the last bar would indicate it was going on reserve soon. Good to know thanks. I've seen them around somewhere, could be a good option. Thanks. -

Brian: I have never bought a filtre for the Venture either but then I've only been riding it for 4 months. Bought one for the Virago about 6 years ago but couldn't find an aftermarket one that fit in the holder and had to get it from the dealer for $18. Seemed kinda expensive. The Venture filtre looks just like the one for the Virago. Frank: I haven't looked for a while but am fairly certain the switch is on reserve. Now if I can just remember which way is on and which way is reserve. Is the filtre before the pump or after it? Perhaps the petcock screen is getting plugged up. Wonder if Seafoam will be able to clear it up? Can't hurt to try. -

Bought a new battery yesterday, charged it up last night and put it in this morning. Cycled the ignition to energize the fuel pump at least 8 times without filling the carbs. Cycling the pump 4 or 5 times is the most I have ever had to do in the past so figured there is a fuel problem. Had a coffee while thinking about what to do next. I know where the fuel pump is but not the filtre. Went out again and found the filtre, wasn't too difficult. Couldn't tell if it was full or not. Decided to run the pump again to see if I could determine whether there was any flow. Cycled the pump 3 times and could see fuel in the filtre about half full. On the fourth cycle the pump slowed and stopped as normal so tried starting the engine and was successful. I'm wondering if there is an issue with the fuel system since having to cycle the pump 12 times seems a bit excessive to me. I have run out of gas a couple of times in the past and do not recall having it take so long to fill the carbs. Is it possible the pump is going south? The pump motor ran strong throughout this process. There was just one bar on the gauge but that should mean there is still plenty of fuel for the pump. There has been no surging or shortage of power at WOT that would indicate to me the filtre was plugging up. Should I be looking for a new pump or a rebuild kit or whatever is available? Any thoughts or suggestions. -
Been having battery issues lately. Battery is due, actually overdue, for replacement however it has been good enough to start the bike twice in a row but not three times without a good run in between. About 4 days ago it would not start after work. Mary came and jumped it for me and I have spent the last few days at her place in town so I would not be stranded outside the city and could get to work. Today I'm off work and I was planning on getting a new battery. Started the bike on its own in the morning as would be normal. It was running well on half choke at 2500 RPM for perhaps 5 minutes when it dropped to about 1200 RPM. Took the choke off and it seemed stable at that RPM but after a few minutes the engine just quit. Mary arrived about that time so we hooked up the jumpers to her vehicle and it turned over really well but would not start. Don't have a freaking clue what is wrong with it. While it was idling it was smooth and was charging well, volt meter read just under the 15 v line. Bike is currently on the street in Victoria.. nowhere to work on it there. Gotta either ride it or tow it home but after that not really sure where to start. Almost anything could be wrong with it. Will get a new battery today. Perhaps the fuel pump quit. Possibly idled long enough to empty the bowl? Didn't overheat. Any thoughtful suggestions other than dynamite would be very helpful.

Not discounting the value of useful applications, this is the best advice anyone could give on setting up a computer for the long run. I also never install any applications on "C: Program Files" but use "D: Program Files" instead but could be any drive. Also move the email and My Documents folders to another drive. In the event of a total crash and restore of the system partition all programs will have to be reinstalled but program data will usually be safe and personal files and email will always be safe. Backups to another HD add an important level of safety.

A couple of years ago I put a new E3 on the front of my Virago and rode it as normal during my commute, not pushing it but not holding back then 4 months later put a new E3 on the rear and did the same. Didn't do anything special to break it in or scrub it. Did not notice any problems. This summer put a new E3 on the front of my Venture while at the Cody Rally and rode around there for a week without noticing anything awkward either. Doesn't seem there is too much to worry about with new tires unless you really feel the need for speed and are driven to dragging your parts through the twisties.

I had Spitfire II tires on my Virago for about 4 years. They seemed to work quite well but the front tracked on metal bridge decks and both front and back danced a lot on tar snakes in the wet. They were replaced by E3's a year ago and I found they were never affected by metal grids and were almost never affected by tar snakes. While I was never particularly concerned about it there were quite a few serious pucker moments with the Spitfire II's. Two months ago I put an E3 on the front of my 90 VR which has a good E2 on the rear and while there hasn't been a lot of rain around here since then, tar snakes have not been an issue on wet roads so far.

Side Stand method not only stops motor but makes certain the transmission is left in gear. Often a good idea as I found out on top of the Beartooth this year. For as long as I can remember I had put the transmission into neutral before shutting off the motor. Not any more though, side stand down is now my only way of shutting down. The key is never left in the ignition, it's a habit since my house key is on the same ring.

Can you elaborate? What part of the swing arm needed tightening? Mine wallows in curves at or over 110 kph (75 mph). The fork oil has not been checked yet. Greased the swing arm linkage before the trip to Cody but didn't think to check for movement.

First off, there is nothing particularly difficult about using a clutch and shifting gears. It just take a little coordination and practice to get the hang of it. If your intention is to keep your scooter for a daily rider around town and get a bike for touring then the Venture is a good choice. They are comfortable, dependable and can pack a lot of stuff. With only 6 months experience on two wheels you will likely find it very difficult to handle in stop and go traffic. A bike such as the Venture is not a very good choice for riding around town because it is not only heavy, but top heavy which makes it unforgiving when stopping and moving slowly as in parking lot maneuvering. Adding a passenger and a few hundred pounds of gear makes it even more difficult. On the other hand, when moving at 20 mph or more big bike will handle just about as easily as your scooter. The same riding techniques are used on two wheels no matter what bike you are riding. The main difference in handling is in the balance due to centre of gravity and the power to weight ratio of the bikes. The size of the engine is not very relevant as there are quite a number of bikes in the 650 to 800 cc range that have twice the power of the 1300 cc Venture and weigh half as much. You can get yourself into trouble very quickly on the more powerful bikes. The answer to your question has a lot of "it depends" in it. Essentially, in my opinion at least, if you want to do some 2 up touring don't bother getting a smaller bike and working up but keep your scooter and get the big bike. Then practice for a year or however long it takes to get competent before taking the one you love out for a spin.

Blatant hijack. Since you have your triple tree apart, how difficult would it be to put a 1 1/2 or 2 inch riser or spacer in between the clamp and the handlebar plate?

A case of a LEO being in the right place at the right time

The LEO was being practical. I've been to traffic court quite a few times through work and have been surprised by the number of people who get off due to minor procedural errors and occasionally vague proof that causes some doubt. The level of proof would be much higher with a major crime like attempted homicide particularly in this case with no smoking gun and no injury. If the charges mentioned can be made to stick then the guy will have paid a fairly high price for his actions. -
One of the front fork airlines has a massive leak in it. Not sure if it is 68 or 69 but in any case they should both be replaced. http://www.partshark.com/fiche_section_detail.asp?section=15285&category=Motorcycles&make=YAMAHA&year=1990&fveh=385 Looks like custom ones will have to be made. Has anyone done this? It would be nice if I could get them made up before taking half the bike apart and having to bus it in the interim.

Perhaps not Partshark as they only list parts that are still available. The Yamaha OEM site lists all parts whether or not they can still be purchased. -
Attached is a pic of the HID ballast. That was my thought too but wanted confirmation from HID Country. The harness has a fuse, 2 ballast connectors and an H4 plug. As mentioned, my thought too but since this part is intended for an auto system why would it have only one H4? It is my guess that it only needs one to tap into the Hi/Lo system so the plug for the other headlight would be taped off. If that is the case though, this harness is perfect for converting a single MC headlight to dual Hi/Lo headlights.

A few of you have had dealings with HID Country. A while ago, about 6 months, I purchased a motorcycle H4 kit and a dual kit for H3 application. The H3 kit was not even close to the size they said it was and would not fit my fog lights so I sent it back. No problem there but there was a part that indicated it was for H4 which I did not return as I thought it was for the MC H4 kit but turned out it wasn't. I have been trying to find out what this part does. It looks like it could be a relay but has two connectors that apparently would hook up to two ballasts. The problem I am having is getting this part identified. I have been corresponding with Mike without success. He does not seem to know what parts my order included. He has not been very responsive, wait for a reply for a few days or a week then send a query through the site to support and perhaps get a response. Anyway, it getting a bit frustrating. The only other person I have corresponded with is Jason who appears to be their technical person. What I would like to know is if anyone has an email address for Jason? Attached are two pix of the part I am trying to ID. It would be helpful f anyone knows what that part does. In any case, I would like to contact Jason directly if I can find his address.
