Stator R-n-R, how much trouble am I in?
camos replied to camos's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
After getting an extension magnet and an extension mirror today it only took two tries to capture the pin. The mirror was no help since it would not fit through any of the holes into the case. It was the smallest mirror Canadian Tire had although a specialty tool store may have a slimmer model. The snake camera would have been the bee's knees for that purpose. If it ever comes up, I'll be voting to become the 51'st state. Fed up with the cross border Hoo-Haw. Thanks to all for the ideas and moral support. -

You are such a ray of sunshine Kevin. I took a bunch of pix and have written a procedure that will not include snapping a bolt off or dropping stuff inside the engine. Perhaps I'll get it posted before you need to start your install. -

A flash of hope! Went out again to have a look just in case but no such luck. The pic below shows a hole on the left with a very (in)convenient chute into it. Probably landed there and shot right in. I'll try the mirror and magnet method tomorrow. Thanks for the input though, much appreciated. -

That's me, that's me. As I recall there were at least 2 holes under the stator that could have been an entry point. Well, the collector is broken so it will need to come off sooner of later anyway. Possibilities, thanks. -

The case would not go on because the shifter lever was not quite oriented correctly so I pulled the case back off and heard a metallic clink, clink but no thud so it's unlikely to have hit the concrete. Didn't appear to be on the floor but will go and have another look since I don't have a magnet pickup tool so tomorrow is as soon as I can get one. Since I can't see it I'm not 100% sure of anything. Also don't have a small mirror. There are a couple of 1" or so holes that the pin could have easily fallen through but no direct view of the bottom of the case. If that doesn't work what is the easiest way into the case? -
Today I pulled out the old burnt out stator and while re-installing the case the pin that goes into the starter gear fell out. Most likely it managed to get itself into the case since it was nowhere else to be seen. I can't see it in the case but it is definitely not on the floor or otherwise visible so....

Been there a few times myself in a 48' boat, the light blue one is probably about 42'. It's definitely not a nice situation. Looks like sand in the water so it's probably fairly shallow. Somewhat like the entrance to the Columbia River where the outbound flow turns the sea into total confusion. During bad weather the swells can be so deep boats such as those two can hit the bottom. Chose to stay out to sea a few times rather than mess with that ****.

I have had an HJC IS-Max for about a year and a half which I am very happy with. I wear this helmet 7 hours per day 5 days per week 52 weeks per year plus a few hours on the weekends and find it very comfortable. It has a flip down sunshade and is Bluetooth ready, according to the manual, for a Chatterbox headset but I installed a Sena SMH 10 which fits just fine. The helmet costs between $180 and $225, approximately depending on the retailer, which puts it in the lower to mid price range and seems to be a very good value. This helmet is meant for a round head which for me was not so good since I have an oval head. It only took a few minutes to shave a little of the foam on the forehead area to get a perfect fit. The other down side is the chin strap uses D-rings which are difficult to navigate with cold fingers so I added a clip converter. HJC has an excellent method of changing the face shield which can be done in minutes with no fuss. There has been no opportunity yet to test how well it will slide on asphalt.

Setting Private Message options
camos replied to camos's topic in Computer help and tips for using this site.
Still can't find those Additional Options listed anywhere. Perhaps they can't be pre-set. Might just be a case of wishful remembering. -
I think I remember there is a way to set the default options that appear checked below a PM message. There are a couple of options I normally un-check but sometimes forget to do which is kind of annoying.

That's pretty much me too with exceptions. I just bought my first cellphone 2 weeks ago after thinking about it since just before going to Cody. Thought it would be a good idea to have one for emergency purposes but never did get one at that time. Anyway, I bought an old iPhone 3G from a friend for $50. He got it unlocked for me so I can use any SIM so when in Canada I use the Speak Easy SIM sold by 7-11 stores for $10 + minutes and when I go to the US I can get a SIM from Wal-Mart or somewhere else. The Speak Easy has a no contract option with minutes added that do not expire for a year. I'm finding uses for this old technology smart phone. It has Wi-Fi so whenever near a free source I can do email and surf the Internet, neither being of much importance but I can if I want. What I have found most useful is a weather app and grocery list app and of course FreeCell to fill in time when necessary. I have missed bidding on a couple of eBay items in the past because I could not be at home when they came due so that may be another perk of having "smart" capabilities. The iPhone also has Bluetooth and MP3 abilities which will likely be useful while riding my Venture. Just thought I would throw another perspective out there for consideration.

They are indeed a PITA but there is a solution. There are chrome lock T hangers available for about $60/pr but a better method, I think is to get a couple of small crescent wrenches for a few bucks each. When not in use they can be left on the lock as a decoration.

That's how I grew up too. Seems to me our parents were the green ones though while we Baby Boomers became the super consumers who created all the wasteful practices that need to be corrected today. Just sayin.

Jacking up a First Gen?
camos replied to yamagrl's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Getting onto the center stand can be a bit difficult. It takes some strength but mostly it is a technique. What I do from the side stand is step on the center stand pedal so the left side hits the ground then rock the bike up so the right side of the center stand is down too. Here is where the technique comes in, while pushing down on the pedal lift up on the left passenger hand rail while rocking backwards. This uses your body weight on the pedal as a lever and your leg muscles to help lift the bike. Takes some practice. It's easier if you are 200 lbs and strong but I've been told even little people can do it but probably they will need to refine the technique. To start with, it is just hard to do. I hear it really helps to drive the bike onto a piece of 2x6 before trying to do the lift. However, never having done it this way I suspect you might also want to have a second piece of 2x6 to put under the side stand in order to keep the bike from tilting way over. To lift the bike with an MC jack, roll it under from either side depending on which side you want to work on then jack it up. The trick here is to find the balance point. The arms will contact the header pipes which is OK. To get a balance, I think the back arm of the jack should be just in front of the center stand. -
I have read about the CMS headlight issue but don't remember that it also affected the dash lights. It's good to know since I also didn't know the start button turned off the dash lights. I'm planning on taking the start button apart this weekend. This also has encouraged me to get some auxiliary lights that are directly wired through a switch. Thanks for the hint.
-
This morning when I went to start the bike the headlight and dash lights were still out. As I backed it out of the shop the headlight and dash lights came on with no help from me. Nice!! I surmise the problem was the start button since the only thing I did last night was to spray it with electrical cleaner. I never noticed the dash lights went off along with the headlight when starting. Life is indeed a long term learning experience.

Stopped at the grocery store after work with everything working normal. Came out, fired up the VR and no headlight and dashlights no CMS backlight. Engine started OK, turn signals, tail light and brake light were working OK too. Checked the fuse box found no blown fuses or weak or corroded holders. Wiggled and pulled the start button. Also checked the headlight bulb which was good. Are the headlight and dash lights connected in some manner or did I win the lottery and get two problems at once? I'm at a loss. Any ideas? I need to ride this thing to work tomorrow morning.

Evan, I can't weld. It looked to me that the repair you did while on the road was to the rear of the collector where the muffler attaches. My problem is with the front end of the collector where it attaches to the forward exhaust header. Actually "headers" would be more accurate. The right one failed, cracked all around. It had been repaired previously with one of those stainless wire mesh bandages and the left side while it is not leaking yet has also been repaired. I think I will need to pull the collector and get a coupling welded on each side that will accept the header pipes. The most unfortunate thing with all of this is last week the rear header pipe on my Virago broke just before the muffler so I have no alternative transportation with both of my two old bikes down with exhaustion. I've been planning on modding the exhaust on the Virago to duals, one on each side. I have the mufflers but need to get the rear header pipe modified to go out the left side. This needs to be done so the Virago can be my transportation while I re and re the carbs and set the valves on the Venture. That leads me to doing a quicky patch on the Venture exhaust to get it in reasonable working order so I can get to work on the Virago so that I can then get the work done on the Venture. Ain't life grand. I was thinking of wrapping some thin sheet metal around the break between the collector and the header pipe along with some muffler cement and a couple of hose clamps. That's the theory and hopefully it will work well enough until the Virago gets back on the road. I'm certainly open to alternative suggestions.

Had another look at it and my exhaust is broken on the front end of the collector so I guess it would not have helped anyway. I'll stop by CCT tomorrow and see what they have to offer.

I bought an LG 42" LCD yesterday from Future Shop and was told by the salesman that most factories are stopping production of LCD TV's so if a replacement is necessary during the warranty period the LCD TV would be replaced by an LED TV. Mostly I don't go for extended warranties but that sold me on it. I'm too easy.

Pulling TCI plugs?
camos replied to camos's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Good thing there isn't. Tried lifting the tab with a screwdriver but then could not get an effective grip to pull on it. Thanks Gary. -
Passed a MkII on Dallas Road on Thursday. Couldn't see very well due to the blinding sun. Looked like it might have been Kevin in Victoria. Not too many MC's wave at scooters.

I'm trying to get the TCI connector plugs out. They wiggle but don't want to come out. There is a tab on top of the plug, is it a latch that needs to be lifted or do I just need to pull harder?
