  1. Naah!!! It's a conspiracy. You need a Guardian Bell hanging on your computer to keep the gremlins away.
  2. Sometimes my space bar does not work too. A work around is to arrow left or mouse left to add the spaces missed and then keep one character to the right of the cursor until you finish the post. The next post should work properly until whatever sets the condition off happens again.
  3. Shaw offers McAfee Security Center for free to their subscribers. It has firewall, virus scanning and automatic updates for free as well. Shaw used to supply a custom version of F-Secure before changing to McAfee. Both packages seem to work very well. I have never subscribed to Telus so don't know if they offer any free A/V software.
  4. The border guards probably don't bother with lower priced items particularly motorcycle parts which do not have duty on them because of lineups in the office. I almost always get to pay the tax when getting parts shipped through customs. There is never a lineup when I'm doing it but they sometimes don't bother when the tax is below $15 or so. Could be just the luck of the draw but probably the the PITA factor is the most prevalent reason.
  5. I know, I'm trying to suck it up but have been feeling traumatized for the past three days since I learned we may get a flake of two in the middle of this coming week.
  6. Surprisingly, your description also fits where I live. I don't seem to need heated gear to ride year round although there is the occasional miserable ride to contend with including a few days when riding is not advisable due to ice. I do understand your point of view though. I went to Australia when I was 20. It was March when I arrived and the temps were in the 60's. For me, having just come through a winter, I was very happy with a Tee and shorts while the vast majority of people were dressed in heavy winter coats. It's all relative. Enjoy the good effects of global warming while you can since the bad effects are more pervasive and a huge disaster. Think droughts, wildfires, floods and the Polar Vortex. You are lucky to have to endure breaking into a sweat while decorating your home for Christmas. A snow free Christmas is a treat I often get to enjoy as well. Hope you have a good one.
  7. You live in Florida, what else would you expect??
  8. There is an outfit in Blaine WA (whose name I forget at the moment) that offers a US shipping address for a nominal cost. Well worth the trouble when online retailers offer free shipping in the lower 48.
  9. I believe you are right but too often Steve is not let out.
  10. Enjoy it while you can Kerry, prediction is we might get a dusting around mid-week. Just the thought of it is traumatizing.
  11. That's an interesting historical tidbit. My 90 had a few of the louvers missing so I left it that way for a while and then decided to remove just the louvers leaving the housing installed. My 89 had perfect louvers and shortly after I got it I removed the whole insert so they would not get lost. The 89 was close to perfect condition and I had the intention to keep it completely stock. Turned out I liked the look of no louvers better, thought it looked cleaner and liked the glimpse of the engine. With respect to heat issues, our rather bland climate did not require closing the area off.
  12. There are so many times when plastic parts in particular are held on or together using a simple although not so obvious method. However, sometimes there is a screw or something solid that is not so readily visible. I totally empathize with you and I also think you made the best choice by asking before continuing. More than one person on VR.org has done everything that could ever be needed on our bikes so it is the best source to find information.
  13. I used to do that too but a while ago I tried to find some and apparently that kind of product is no longer available. I did find some baby powder that would spray a dusting on the area.

    I want one

Taurus 2x2 All Terrain Vehicle Perfect for getting to work in the winter. Wonder if they will ever get over to this continent?
  15. I believe the anti-dives on the MkI's are activated by the brakes so there could be a leak in either the brake line or the fork oil. Knowing which type of oil was puddled would indicate where you need to look closer. Perhaps a spray of baby powder will help to point out where the oil is coming from.
  16. All good to know if I ever need to get in there. It is so much better to be prepared with parts before opening up anything to do with the engine. Thanks Heather, you have come through again.
  17. Rather than waiting forever for an answer, I checked with Google and it appears the pistons should just pop out. Seems there are O-rings in the cylinder and nothing on the pistons. Probably much quicker to pop them out and use some 600+ grit to clean the cylinder walls.
  18. If the mounting screws are long does that mean the bottom part of the Twinkie extends quite a way into the engine case? Besides the gasket, are there O-rings that might need to be replaced?
  19. Remove the carbs to get the twinkie off? I thought it was just a little thing that allowed a couple of hose connections. My 90 has the oil in the coolant problem so I pulled the twinkie cover off but did not try to remove the whole thing. It is just one of those things I'll get to eventually if the 90 does not become a parts bike first.
  20. Yesterday I pushed it too far and ran out of gas about 2 miles from a gas station. So, I'm on my way on foot with my little gas can. Walked about a mile in a light drizzle having been passed by more than a dozen vehicles non of which stopped to offer me a lift. I was feeling a bit grumbly but since it was my own fault was trying unsuccessfully to suck it up. Suddenly a guy on a bike stopped to offer assistance. He had passed me a few minutes earlier going the other way but when he saw my bike on the side of the road he turned around and found me. He offered to take my gas can, get it filled and meet me back at my bike. I told him I didn't have any money, just a credit card and he said that didn't matter. I gave him the can and started walking back to my bike and almost got to it when he arrived with some gas. The guy's name is Steve. I am sure there are quite a few people on the forum who have met their own "Steve" and I also know that there are quite a few "Steves" on this forum. For all the "Steves" who make this world a better place, take a moment or raise a glass... "Here's to you Steve."
  21. The other day I noticed the left front rotor was a bit rusty. Today I took the caliper off and found three of the pistons were stuck. Spent half the day pushing the pistons out, cleaning them then pushing them back in. It was downright tiresome. Is there a better way to clean the pistons? I have never taken a caliper apart. If the pistons were not stopped would they pop out of the caliper? Discovered an interesting detail today though. The two pins that hold the pads are directional and must be inserted from a particular side or there is not enough clearance to insert the cotter pins. So remember from which side you removed the pins or you might have to spend 15 minutes scratching your head with dirty fingers.
  22. A bit more on a related topic: last January my engine was running a bit rough, all four firing but all four plugs were getting sooty. The roughness was not at idle but started at about 3500 RPM and above. I had cleaned all the ignition connectors and the battery terminals with only a minor improvement. The problem turned out to be a bad stator that was only partially charging the battery and probably not putting out enough voltage to adequately supply the coils at the higher RPM. After replacing the stator and doing nothing else the engine ran perfectly and has done so since then.

    Aaaaggghhh!

Assuming you are not married to the Wicked Witch of the North, congratulations on your achievement and best wishes to you both for the next 40.
  24. I have always thought the E3's were dual compound, long before the MT designation showed up on their site. I went to the Dunlop site for confirmation and found on the spec chart that only the rear tire is multi-tread so, you appear to be right. Now I have no explanation why my favourite tire wears so well.
  25. No matter how much we like carving corners, we all spend more time riding on the center than on the edges. Squaring off is likely due to a single compound tread which would naturally wear off more in the center than on the edge. Having a harder compound in the middle to take the extra wear caused by upright highway riding should be beneficial to evening out the wear pattern. No claim to be an expert here but it is my understanding that feathering on a four wheeler is caused by excessive camber, primarily due to suspension issues. I don't know how that relates to a motorcycle since when we go around a corner we are inducing excessive camber. I have been wondering whether tire pressure has anything to do with it. Then again, perhaps it is your fault because you are too often riding too fast in circles.
