Cleaning and Bleeding Brakes

Have you purchased O-ring seals and scrapers for Yamaha brakes? If so, do you happen to have part numbers? -
Cleaning and Bleeding Brakes
camos replied to camos's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
That's a really good idea, particularly for us Canadians. A while before attempting this job I looked into getting the O-ring kits from the local Yamaha dealer although I don't recall how much the cost was they were extremely expensive. I could get the same Yamaha kit in from the USA for $50 less but that was still on the expensive side. Thanks for the idea. -
Cleaning and Bleeding Brakes
camos replied to camos's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
So I just updated my post on Cleaning and Bleeding Brakes to include the cleaning part of the process. Popping the pistons out is pretty straight forward and just takes time, most of which was spent in getting the pistons back in. There was nothing unexpected that happened so all my stressing and delaying getting to it was unnecessary. I did not replace the o-rings, just cleaned them with my special toothbrush and some brake clean. -
Timing Advance

Perhaps you are referring to something else here but if a carb leaks enough gas into the cylinder to cause a hydro-lock then a delay in firing will not prevent damage because just turning it over with the starter will likely break something. -
Rode to work this afternoon and will be riding home at 23:30. Not as nice as VAZ's ride but I'll take it.
-
It was 32F when I rode to work at 22:45 New Years Eve and then rode home the next day at 07:40 in 34F for a sum total of about 25 miles. Not a very exciting ending or beginning for me but sometimes that's all you get. However, getting out for a short ride is way better than not getting out at all. The only unusual thing about that night was that it was warmer in the morning than it was at night which made it a really good start to the year.

Glacier National Park? Is it worth it to get a passport?

Be sure to hang the bag as far away from the tree trunk as possible, not forgetting bears can reach 8 to 10 feet high. For sure, don't hang it on a branch over or near your tent. -
I don't know for sure what Vigilink is all about but assume it has something to do with advertising. There have been a few times on here that Vigilink has failed to forward to the url that I'm after so I ended up on the Vigilink page. There may well be a button to help get to the intended url but I'm not interested in advertisers or their s**t so a simple copy/paste is my preferred solution.
-
It's vigilink that is messing up the url. Try this one https://www.summitracing.com/int/parts/mrg-8090/overview/ I got there by copy/paste the original link in the post.

I've noticed that too. My theory is that free and happily content people are very accepting of foreign differences which also translates to those who disparage the religions of others and I would go so far as to say those who have a racist bias are not happy and are looking for someone to blame for it. Yes, you don't see many refugees fleeing to Communist or Islamic countries. I don't think that is about the people so much as the politics of those countries... freedom is probably the most important thing for happiness but prosperity likely runs a close second.

Totally agree. I wonder if other cultures have ignorant PC people as well, or, is it just us?

Exactly so doesn't it make you wonder what lame brain is pushing this Happy Holidays substitution for Christmas. There is nothing intrinsically wrong with the term Happy Holidays but I can't recall it being used during Thanksgiving and other holidays. Saying Merry Christmas to anyone from another faith is not being the least bit intolerant. Christmas is not just about celebrating the birth of Jesus, it is also about good will and brotherhood to all. That's as inclusive as you can get. All other religions have their own set of important celebrations that aren't necessarily grouped around the winter solstice, which was celebrated long before Christmas was ever thought of. Merry Christmas to all.
-
Right, I've noticed that too. This country is following in the footsteps of the leftist PC apologist tree huggers in California. I wonder if The Donald is having a positive affect on the war on Christmas around here like he is with our neighbours south of the border. One can only hope.

Any gain in re-torquing swing arm bolts??
camos replied to kyle's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
So that's a pertinent question. More important, however, have the bearings ever been lubricated? Don't know about the Gen 2's but Gen 1's after 90 had grease nipples in the joints which made it much easier to prevent excessive and or early wear on those points. -
I'm pretty sure plug wires with resistance are carbon core automotive ones and are not what you should be using. Instead look for solid core wires. All the resistance is in the cap resistor. As far as radio interference is concerned, the R on the spark plug stands for resistance which is supposed to cut the radio interference. There was a fairly lengthy discussion on the Virago site quite a few years ago about this same corroded resistor issue and quite a few people recommended replacing the resistor with a suitable length of #10 solid copper wire. It worked and many claimed that it gave a stronger spark.

There are two grommets for the tank cover. A slot one at the front and then a round one for the bolt at the back. I got the rear one from a Yamaha dealer a couple of years ago so they might still be available. Don't know about the front one though.

Hazzard a guess?
camos replied to s.tyler58's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Getting very close to the cost of one of them Yamaharleys I'm guessing. -
Thanks for your kind offer Puck but I've already ordered one from the other side of the world so you can keep it available for anyone else who might be in more desperate need. When I was searching for the cables that no had left were being offered for about $17 so I know I likely spent more than necessary but other than gas, brake pads and oil, my 89 VR has not cost me anything in the past 3 years so that $27 does not seem so bad. It's just a plain pull cable of a certain length so they are very likely available from some other application for much less. Perhaps if you or anyone else has the choke cable off the bike, it might be very useful to get a measurement of the overall length and the size of the end buttons. That cable oiler looks like a good solution for quickly lubing a cable. I did it the KISS way by applying a few drops of 30 wt oil then letting it dribble down before adding a few more drops and then a few more drops... While that was happening I spent time in the yard vacuuming up a bunch leaves so it all worked out pretty well.
-
The choke cable on my 89 has been sticking for a while so today I disassembled it at the handlebar to oil it and noticed one of the wire strands had come away from the end piece. So, I decided to order a replacement and was very surprised to find part 26H-26331-00-00 is mostly unavailable. Tried Boats.net, Part Shark and a few other places that normally have parts for these old VR's. I did finally find a Yamaha one on eBay.ca for US$27.00 in Norway of all places but with free shipping worldwide. There might be some available locally, somewhere in North America, for less but I never found it. Anyway, thought I would mention they now seem to be as rare as hen's teeth so if your VR's choke cable is on the iffy side it might be a good idea to source a new one out.

Quite so and that is part of why I decided to go with a dumb TV connected to an Android box running KODI which can be regularly updated and has way more options than any of the smart TV app I have seen. If someone is only interested in connecting to the Amazon service then the Firestick may be an adequate option but the Android boxes are faster and offer more capabilities than the Firestick.
-
I bought a small smart TV six months ago and was very disappointed with the apps that came with it. Returned it for a not smart version of the same model for over $100 less then bought a media box with KODI preloaded from Amazon for $70. Works way better with a bigger selection of apps and cost a bit less. Win-Win as far as I can see. Never owned a Firestick but heard they can get a bit hot running video through the USB connector so opted for the media box. Have two of them now and they work great.

EBC Sintered HH - Part Numbers Front & Read
camos replied to BigBear's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I was unaware the Gen 2 used the same pads as the Gen 1. So the EBC sintered version is FA 123 HH and is what I use on both the front and rear of my 89 Mk II. -
Amzoil 20w-50
camos replied to Big Auggie's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Exactly. From what I have heard Amsoil is a good oil that is on the expensive side. The V-twin designation likely refers to being able to stand extreme the temperatures generated by air cooled antiques. Rotella T dino has been proven to work very well over the years, decades, and is relatively inexpensive so unless you are dedicated to :mo money:then it is the logical choice. -
What do you guys think of this?
camos replied to Chaharly's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
If you want only Bluetooth connectivity to a headset for music then you can get an adapter to go from the 5 pin connector to small stereo plug and a Bluetooth transmitter similar to the one shown in your link for about $20 total. This setup won't allow talking on the CB though. Most of the transmitters are rechargeable battery operated. I have been using one for about 4 years without issue other than keeping it charged. Recently I found one for about $12 Cdn that is powered by USB so it can be turned on or off with the ignition. Haven't installed it yet but do expect it to be much more convenient. -
Well, let's see, 1 lb ground beef costs about $2.50 which will make 4 patties. A good bun is about $.50 and the rest of the ingredients probably cost a buck. So $3 versus $9... Hmmmm, well on the way to paying for my next bike.
