My son, a career Marine with 18 years in has also spent multiple tours in Iraq. He too spent a lot of $$ on his own gear (wanted the best available). As for chow, he's eaten a ton of MRE's. The food has always been there and it's very rich in calories (eat it at home and you'll gain a TON of weight), but as has been mentioned, stress, combined with carrying VERY heavy loads on your back will cause ya to lose weight. He's lost more than 25 pounds on each tour....

:stirthepot:Well....if ya really wanna shake things up "buy an American vehicle". I was looking at the latest Car and Drive and they have a listing of % of each vehicle which is made in the US/Canada. Per Uncle Sam, it has to be 70+% to be "Made in America". Using the gov's standards, Car and Driver show that the Ford 150, Chevy Siverado and Dodge 1500 are NOT "Made in the US', while the Toyota Tundra and Honda Accord are...just sayin'

2001 BMW F650 Dakar w/ hard bags and trunk. Great bike and a real hoot to ride!

Uh, thanks Charlie but you can keep it...I've had all I care for this year already thank you:whistling:

For what it's worth, there's a guy on the classifieds section at GL1800riders that just posted a complete set of saddlebag AND trunk tail lights for $125 for 01-06 GL1800.......Looks like it was just posted a few hours ago. May be worth checking out.

Personally, I'd avoid I-95 like the plaque. Yeah, it is the "fastest" way, but IMHO it is one of the worst roads (especially Motorcycle roads!!) in the country. Too much traffic, too many nut jobs driving...etc. Take another day or two, ride down on decent roads where ya can really ENJOY the trip.. I used to go for the races and not the party. THe party's kinda overrated anyway .... I'd rather ride than put up with the traffic.

Forest was right....stupid is as stupid does. Or, as an old engineer friend of mine put it, it's tough to make things idiot proof 'cause idiots are so ingenious....
-
What he said! Otherwise, a flat tire at the side of the road leaves you subject to whoever comes along.....

You mention a "P" frame S&W. Not really familiar with that one. The "J" frame Smiths are great little revolvers. Grips are readily available in all sizes and calibers are .38 or .357. Put on a set of crimson trace laser grips and you've got the best "quick" site setup going. They're available in both a small and larger size for these revolvers.

Remember that the Venture has the aerodynamics of a brick. Pushing that big, upright windshield through the air at high speed will definitely takes its toll on mileage. Lower speeds = a LOT less drag and, therefore, better mileage. Couple that with a light touch on the throttle and your mileage will go way up! Personally though I always caught myself cracking the throttle pretty hard and that really kills the mileage:no-no-no:. My best was low 40's (42.4?). I've got the same issues/problem with my Wing now. Can't stay "off" the wick:whistling:. Oh well, it is nice to know you CAN get better mileage if you really want to....

IF they're all leather, soaking and wearing till dry will work, BUT it's not very much fun. I'd look hard for a set of shoe trees that "lock". Failing that, try a decent shoe (repair) shop. They can do it without too much trouble. Only problem is "finding" a shoemaker these days:fingers-crossed-emo

Gotta say I don't like the paint job on the lowers up front. Personal thing I guess. Looking at that, plus the relocation of the "badge" to that area and the new shape of the panniers, looks more "BMWish". Not a bad thing, but I think I like the '10 better. Glad they didn't screw up the powertrain. Wonder why, with all the "goodies" they STILL didn't go with an electrically adjustable windscreen. (My old FJR had one!).
-
Well, Honda's announced the '12 Wing. Looks like same powertrain with some mod's to the bodywork, specifically the side cases. I like the older model better, but that's just my 2cents.... Glad I bought my '10. The 12 doesn't appear to be any quantum leap forward.....
-
That really bites, but at least you weren't ON it when it happened!. If it makes you feel any better back in 07 I bought a new FJR out of state. Took it to the courthouse to get it registered. While I'll in the Sheriff's office, this moron in a Dodge pickup backed right into my new (203 miles) motorcycle and shoved it backwards about 3 ft. I went walking out the door carrying my helmet and a guy says "is that your bike out front. I say Yeah, he says, that idiot out there in the Dodge just backed over it". Took out the forks, fender, front wheel, brake rotors, etc. Wound up costing about $1800 and my "new" bike was in the shop two weeks. The perpetrator never evey apologized or said he was sorry. 'Tis a good thing murder's illegal, 'cause I sure thought about it!

What was said in the opening post is the absolute truth. I too wound up with a Wing (which I truly enjoy) BUT I've never found any site or group of folks who are as enjoyable and "fun" as this group, while always being helpful and considerate of other folks opinions and needs. GREAT BUNCH HERE!!

Also. watch out for sand, ice patches, etc. that aren't there later in the year. FInding stuff like that in a curve'll ruin your whole day....

Nice Ride!! You'll love your new 'Wing!!! I've never looked back since I first climbed on mine last fall! Enjoy it!! You WILL find it rides like a sport bike!!!

Is it just me or is this whole winter being a PITA for riding. This morning, early, the driveway was finally almost cleared of snow and the road looked pretty good. Decided I'd take the little bike out for a while, checked the tires and went in to get ready to ride. Looked out and "surprise" it was snowing like heck. Now we've got an additional 4" or so and it's still going strong. (and the temps are supposed to be in the 50's by Sunday!!) I'm gettin' cabin fever! I know y'all in the frozen north are used to this (used to live in Mich and Ia myself) but come on, this is Dixie! I usually get to ride several time a month year round, but NOT this year...
-
Oz has sure had its share this year, that's for sure. Stay Safe!!

Early summer is nice, though once I caught some SNOW at night in JUNE:doh:. BEAUTIFUL ride!!
-
I really enjoyed mine. If it was more comfy for the wife 2-up, it would still be in the garage. What a GREAT solo ride....
-
I ride pretty much all year, though I do avoid (1)snow, (2) ice, (3) rain/wet roads WHEN it's cold ('cause it'll BE ice in some places). Temps don't bother me too much, I've got good gear and I wear it. If it's in the 30's or cooler I break out the electric vest and socks, otherwise, just suit up and ride. (Unfortunately THIS year we're having a lot (for Kentucky) of snow, so that's cut down on saddle time a good bit...

Good looking Bouv! We've had two of 'em over the years and Nobody wanted to mess with 'em, yet they were great with the grandkids when they were tiny. I've got pictures of the first one asleep with my two very small granddaughters sleeping on TOP of the dog! A Bouv and a 12 gauge is about as safe as you can get!

I'm a fan of arctic cat. I've got two of 'em, a '99 300 4x4 manual shift and a '05 500TRV (two rider vehicle) 4x4 automatic. Both have winches, both are very capable. With that said what do you really want to do with it. EITHER of my machines is capable off road, however if you're going through the woods the smaller machine is WAY more agile and will go places the boys on the 500 and bigger machines can't ever dream of going. We've got a lot of trails around here that are basically "horse" trails. The lil' cat will go through ANY of them, the bigger machines simply can't make the tight turns between trees that a horse or smaller machine can do. Look at where you want to ride and then make your choice! Good Luck!
