High RPM Missfire
bobcat replied to Sheradan's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
You mentioned you synced the carbs...Double check to make sure you put all those rubber nipples back on the sync ports.. -
For what its worth....I've likewise have never had trouble using 20/50...I've used Castrol GTX 20/50 for well over 25 years in both my bikes...During the heart of winter I will drop the wt to 10/40 but as soon as thats over I'm back to using 20/50..

Bike backfires on deceleration
bobcat replied to bobcat's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I'll be dipped in sh**...you hit it right on the head..After reading your post I thought what the heck might as well check those nipples before going any further and sure enough the R/F carb was missing a nipple....Thanks for saving me the anguish of trying to figure out why the backfiring... I owe you a few beers if we ever meet...- 6 replies

Today for the first time my bike started backfiring on deceleration...these were not the usual rumbling or small pops I normally heard when coming down a mountain road but rather loud backfires..It did it both in 3rd and 4th gear at about 4000rpm decelerating to 3000 rpm..I thought it might be due to altitude but it did it at lower elevations also... I did the needle modification to lean out the bike, could that be causing it? All else is good..starts and runs fine..alls good except the backfiring..

How to best change spark plugs on "87
bobcat replied to jonsmyth's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I use 18mm socket with a universal joint (3/8 drive) with a 18" extention and ratchet...The long extension makes it easy.. -
Reverse bleeding?
bobcat replied to Bulldawg's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Pulling off the saddlebag on the rt side shouldn't be a problem...I use a 10mm socket with a 1/4 in rachet and extension..take off every 10mm bolt or cap you see inside the case and it should come out easy.....Also I never knew there were so many ways to bleed brakes..I must be a dinosaur because I can't think of anything easier to do on a bike then bleeding brakes the old fashioned way...Its always worked for me -

I did as you suggested..I can't believe how simple that was..All in all it took me about 20 mins, and I'm slow...I was about 20 miles into my last bar on the guage..I took out the float and bend the rod down..Now I have two bars and I'm at 145 miles..That seems about right.. Again, thanks for that great idea..

My trip meter is not in sync with my gas guage either...There have been times when I thought I was running on fumes and would put in 3.5 gals when I got to a gas station..By my calculations I should get about 200 miles out of a tank of gas but when the gas guage gets down to its last bar (at about 140 mi)and although I know I'm safe, I look for gas, just in case>> I've been meaning to carry a 2 gal gas can with me and run my bike until it runs out of gas to get the actual miles it can go however I've owned my bike over 15 years and I still haven't got around to doing it....Maybe tomorrow:fiddle:

shimmys gone
bobcat replied to loadmaster's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
A front end shimmy is usually caused by a loose steering head bearing but if new tires did the trick all the better...If however it starts to shimmy again then you'll know what it is.. -
Just a word of thanks!

I agree with you Dave...The thing I've always liked about this site is its truly bikers helping one another...I've gotten great advise that has saved me both undue trouble and money as well.. -
simple oil question
bobcat replied to KarlS's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
About 20 years ago a chemical engineer told a group of us (bikers) that oil starts to break down at about the 2000 mile mark so if you changed your oil every 2k then you would get the optimum use from that oil....It may be BS but I have followed that advise ever since... Also, I have used STP, or a similiar product, for years in all my vehicles...I believe the hype that oil will maintain a higher viscosity for a longer period of time by adding STP..I've NEVER suffered any type of ill effect by using it and I swear it helps the bike shift smoother.... -
simple oil question
bobcat replied to KarlS's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
For what its worth...I've used Castrol GTX 20-50 for years..I change oil every 2000 miles and add about 1/3 of a container of STP with each oil change...I have no reason to change this routine..I've never had an oil related problem and that includes leaks.. -
carb mod....can't find #4 washers
bobcat replied to bobcat's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I eventually found the #4 steel washers at Radio Shack...I didn't know those other washers would work also, but I do now.. Thanks -
Charging a new battery
bobcat replied to FROG MAN's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
In my opinion 5-10 amps is too much...I'd suggest putting in the acid, let it set for a couple of hours then trickle charge the battery until the light turns green..That may take a day or two but it will be worth it in the long run.. -
Improving gas mileage...update
bobcat replied to Venturous Randy's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
My bike must be an oddball..it doesn't seem to matter if I average 70 or 80 mph my gas mileage stays at 40mpg with little varience..When I add gas I can take the gallons used, multiply it by 4 and it will equal the amount of miles..(within 1-2 miles)sometimes much to my amazement... I've been following this shim post and although I'm tempted to modify the needles I think I'll leave well enough alone.....- 44 replies

mountainbob
bobcat replied to mountainbob's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I have a 86VR also and that happened to me too..Here's what I did..(real simple) Take that triangle shaped panel off the rt side that has the grill and reflector.. Just above the cylinder, staring you in the face is the thermostat..It has a brown and blue wire going to it...disconnect and clean up the connection...I used a small wire brush and electrical cleaner and that did the trick.. I forget which is which but there also is a single wire going to a switch..I cleaned that up also and squeezed the female end just a bit so it fit more snug..I think that was the fan thermostat..Might as well get them both while you're in there -
Seems to lack the "oomph" it had...

Just for sh*** and grins I'd replace the plugs... -
