Shinko tire question
bobcat replied to bobcat's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Thats my sentiments exactly...thats why I posed the question regarding Shinko tires..I want to be convinced that they are not a POS.. I must say that members seem to be satisfied with them.. -
Shinko tire question
bobcat replied to bobcat's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I must disagree with you on this one...My current front tire is a Metzeler 880, and I can't hardly believe it myself, but it has 31,000 on it..Its ready to be changed but it still isn't that bad (suprisingly)..I get about 17-18K on the rear...I have never failed to get at least 20k from a front tire...Maybe it has something to do with where I live (Nevada)..Lots of flat open roads.. Thats why I asked the question about has anyone gone 15K...If no one has reached that then that would tell me the tires are not that big of a bargain...Mind you, that's only my opinion... -
I'm debating whether to buy a pair of Shinko tires..The price is enticing but I can't seem to escape the old addage " you get what you pay for" My question is: has anyone put over 15k on this tire and can offer a positive testimonial after doing so... Inquiring mind wants to know Thanks

So does everyone hate..............
bobcat replied to Blue Giant's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I have a love/hate feelings for Metzeler 880's.....When I bought my 86VR it came with a new set of 880's..The rear prematurally started chuncking out at 6k and I replaced it with an Elite III...however, I'm now ready to replace the front tire..it has 31,000 on it. I'll reorder a Metz 880 but only for the front.. -
First I'd try syncing the carbs and changing the plugs....BTW, if you were fighting a stiff headwind, that could do it also.

Along with bongobobs suggestion of cleaning up the solenoid and battery connections I'd also toss in a new set of spark plugs -
Need help dealing with a fuel leak
bobcat replied to bobcat's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Seafoam here (Reno, Nv) is available at Autozone and Napa auto supplies....Seafoam claims it can be used in just about any gasoline engine, even in lawn mowers..Not sure about diesel -
I'm getting ready to buy a new front tire online for my 86 VR (120/90 18)...I've mostly used competition accessories but I thought this time I'd ask other members where they get their tires online and why... Thanks in advance

Need help dealing with a fuel leak
bobcat replied to bobcat's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I might add that I've been a regular user of Seafoam...I add about 1/3 of a can every other tankful.... PS....I like that idea of the camp fuel -
Need help dealing with a fuel leak
bobcat replied to bobcat's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
That's what it must have been, a sticking float..As recommended I removed the drain plug and turned the key on to flush the bowl..I replaced the drain plug and started the bike..No leak Thanks all for your help -
Noticed a funny odor coming from my bike...I discovered fuel leaking from the over flow tube from the right rear carb... Anybody have any experience dealing with this type of problem? (and how to fix) Thanks

Snag A couple of years ago I was rebuilding my carbs and I asked that same question to MRCYCLES...They said it has been too many years for rebuilding kits to be good anymore so none were available..Evidently they had pulled rebuilding kits from the shelves some years prior(Dried gaskets, diaphrams etc) so parts had to be ordered individually.... I can tell you one thing, its not cheap especially if you include diaphrams...

Switch for headlight question
bobcat replied to bobcat's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Masterguns I just finished installing a off/on switch so I can shut off the headlight...real simple. I removed the headlight fuse and wired the switch there..The switch itself I installed inboard of the radio..If you remove the radio panel you'll find the spot I'm talking about..I had to drill a small hole for the wires from the switch to go through and of course a hole for the switch itself.... I've been wanting to do this for years. Its was so simple I now wonder why I procrastinated so long.... -
Stator ouput voltage
bobcat replied to CrazyHorse's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I'd check the battery with a hydrometer..you could have a couple of weak cells or a dead cell..Just because a battery checks out ok doesn't mean its good under a load... -
Switch for headlight question
bobcat replied to bobcat's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I have at times wished I could shut my headlight off..here's a couple of reasons...There have been times when I have gotten a motel room where the parking spot was not in front of my room and when I parked my bike I was lined up with the window of someone elses room..I would have prefer to shut my light off out of courtesy...that also goes for entering a campground at night Also, although its never happened the thought crossed my mind if I were ever in a situation where my bike was losing charge and I was out in the middle of nowhere that I could go many miles further with the headlight off... -
I have various reasons for wanting to do this...I want to install a off/on toggle switch so I can shut off my headlight when I feel like it..Has anyone done this? I was wondering if I did shut off the headlight would the red light start flashing and would the high and low beam icon also start flashing....

Spark Plug troubles...
bobcat replied to Ivan's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I use non resistor plugs....NGK DP8EA-9 or #5829 I get them at Napa Auto Supply -
I've heard this about Pyramid seals several times before that they are too tall (or thick) and are near impossible to install....This is one of those occasions where trying to save a couple of bucks will cost 2-3 times as much in the long run....OEM is the best way to go
-
I've had good luck using LUCAS POWER STEERING STOP LEAK to stop fork leaks...With bike on center stand. lift dust cover and apply stop leak around the seal then put dust cover back in place...take bike off center stand and bounce it up and down a few times..Wipe off excess stop leak..it will take a little time but it should stop leaking...sometimes it takes a second application..I've done this procedure 4 times and it stopped a fork leak every time..

Cramped legs???
bobcat replied to Ga Dawg's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Something is not right with your seat that has you almost sitting on the gas tank....All I can add is that I'm 6'5 with a 32" inseam and have a 86 Venture that is very comfortable to ride... When I bought my bike the previous owner had the shift lever set so high that I had to bring my foot off the peg every time I shifted...(Very uncomfortable)..After adjusting to my liking it shifts a lot easier...I bring this up because In addition to your seat could be the shifter is not adjusted to you.. -
newbie electrical gremlins
bobcat replied to longrider805's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Sounds like a potential TCI problem..the TCI sits under the battery..I'd pull the air filter box to gain access to the TCI plug and clean the plug connections...Also if you haven't already I'd change the spark plugs.... The real tech guys should be weighing in on this soon... Good Luck- 30 replies

Usually thats a sign of dirt between the pads and rotor...Try blowing the dirt out with pressurized air..If that doesn't work I'd take the pads off and clean them and the rotor with a fine steel wool pad...
