Jack I live in Reno and spend a fair amount of time riding in the Sierras...I ride with a few other fellows and all of us have different brand bikes( Gold Wing, BMW 1200, BMW R100, Harley, Kawasaki 1400 and my Yamaha 1300)....The one thing we all have in common is we all get great mileage in those Sierra Mountain twisties so I've concluded that the slow low speed is the reason....

that low speed feeling
bobcat replied to Indyventure's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I would check two things....First, and the easiest would be front tire pressure then I'd check the tightness of the steering head bearing... Many years ago my bike had a strange spongy feel to the steering...I wound up being a roofing nail in my front tire and the loss of air pressure- 19 replies

Need Cruise control brain
bobcat replied to CrazyHorse's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I know its not what you're looking but something you might want to consider.....For years I messed with my c/c..It worked then it didn't then it would lose speed when engaged or it would shut off while engaged and so on..I finally installed a Vista cruise control (friction lock) that I bought from JC Whitney for $35...No more c/c problems, it works great... -
Add me to that list too....as other members stated, when a problem arises with starting my first glance is at the kill switch and every time that was the cause.... I've wondered why they're on the bike in the first place..

One more comment regarding high winds.....Its definitely easier to handle with a full face helmet with the shield closed...

I agree completely.....I've put well over 150K on first gen 1300 Yamahas...I've used Castrol GTX 20/50 the whole time with no problems.....good stuff

I live in Nevada and riding in heavy winds is a way of life...I don't know if you ever get completely comfortable in heavy winds, I know I don't..The only thing I do different in heavy winds is to hunch down behind the windshield..this seems to give better control to the buffeting...

Sounds dumb, but

Deep 18mm swivel socket or socket w/universal... 3/8 drive.....10-12" extention and rachet..This setup is the easiest way to remove the spark plugs... When installing plugs I suggest putting a thin coat of anti seize on the threads...- 9 replies

Carb question
bobcat replied to oldschool's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
When I rebuilt my carbs a couple of years ago I tried to buy rebuilding kits also but all the places I tried said the same thing....no kits available..you have to order each part seperately...the cheapest place I found for OEM parts was www.mrcycles.com -
kill switch problem
bobcat replied to Wizard765's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I too want to thank everyone for their replies and solutions...I had the exact same thing happen to me this past weekend so I was watching this post with interest.. I'd like to bypass the kill switch..has anyone out there done that? If so, how'd you do it...To me the kill switch is nothing more than a PIA Thanks -
Hot weather riding, engine temp
bobcat replied to Gearhead's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I wired an off/on switch directly to the fan so I can turn the fan on whenever I want like in the situation you described.....This way I don't have to wait for the engine to get too hot before the fan kicks in... -
Oil change question
bobcat replied to Locomotive's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
You'll drain more oil when the oil is hot..I try to change my oil after returning from a long run or I let my engine run until the oil is not warm but hot to the touch... -
If it ain't one thing, it's another
bobcat replied to Russ's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I'm guessing you initally filled the radiator and never checked it again after the engine warmed up to see if it needed more coolant...(Thats my 2 cents worth) -
Fork Oil - Level or Quantity
bobcat replied to Squeeze's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Try this, you have nothing to lose...I did this and it worked on mine..My rt front fork was leaking to the point where fluid was running down the fork and getting in my brake pads..I had a container of LUCAS POWER STEERING STOP LEAK that I used in my Ford truck so I figured why not..I lifted the dust cover on the fork seal and put a bead of stop leak around the top of the seal then put the dust cover back in place..(while on the center stand) It took a little while to work itself in but the fork quit leaking and hasn't leaked for about 2 months now..As an after thought I'm considering adding about 1 or 2 oz of stop leak to the fork oil but for now I'll let well enough alone.... -
Rizz.....I change my fuel filter everytime I change the rear tire.(with rear tire off the access is easier)...About cracked plastic.. Go to the end of the existing crack and drill a small hole..this will prevent the continuation of the crack (this method is called "stop drilling")..I use ABS cement to patch cracks..The fairing is made out of ABS so the cement works well and its cheap..I use a toothpick to apply the ABS cement in the cracks..

Jack As posted by Jeff I too had the same problem that I thought I could live with until the rt brake switch started to smoke.....I disconnected it immediately and ordered a new switch, about $35...Just for sh*** and grins why don't you disconnect the front brake switch and see if thats the problem....There are 2 tabs top and bottom on the switch..use a small bladed screwdriver and it'll come off real easy...
