Snag...You made many good points that I cannot dispute...

For those of you that suggested Colorado there is another club like ours that has a rally in Montrose, Co...Sept 15-19, 08 check it out at www.venturers.org I'm all signed up and ready to go, just biding my time until Sept
-
I'd suggest Cedar City, Ut....The scenic beauty of the area is second to none....From C/C is easy access to Bryce, Zion,Cedar Breaks and Kolob Nat'l parks...The town of Cedar City has everything there that a rally requires..Motels,Restaurants,grocery stores,Walmart, laundromats and a Yamaha Dealer..For the more adventurous, Las Vegas is about 150 mi away... I might add that I co-hosted a ride-in for another Venture club in Cedar City that was a resounding success...

I use my trunk rack to put on something thats bulky but on the light side.....You don't want it too heavy because you'll want to often open your trunk and if the lids too heavy it makes it ackward to deal with....I found that out the hard way

fork dependant speed wobble ?
bobcat replied to 6m459's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I always equate a front end shimmy with the steering head bearing...that has always been the case with me... It seems odd you'd get a wobble with one set of forks and not the other but I'd still tighten the steering head bearing if for no other reason then to eliminate it as the potential problem..... -
Bad Stator?
bobcat replied to Schlepporello's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I agree that it sounds like a battery....One of the best ways to check the battery is with a hydrometer... About where to buy a battery.....years ago I needed a battery and was new to town..I looked in the yellow pages under battery (duh) and found a hole in the wall battery business that had all sorts of batteries..New, used etc.I bought a new battery for my Venture and had it for 5-6 years..A hydrometer check showed it was getting weak in a couple cells so I bought another and that one has been in for several years now...My point is the batteries I've bought weren't brand names but they were good batteries and a lot cheaper....I've bought all my vehicle batteries from this guy and have not gotten a bad one yet..... -
steering head bearings
bobcat replied to Locomotive's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I've always adjusted the steering head with the bike off the center stand...I tap the spanner nut just enough to get the looseness out..As freebird said its tough to describe how tight to go, Its more of a feel thing so I'll say tighten it until its barely snug..You'll get a better feel for it with the bike off the center stand.. -
You've got to pick the time and place to prove your point...Your story is funny until its realized that you could have provoked that kid into killing himself....the best part of the story is no car turned left in front of that kid...after that the story is hilarious

As freebird said, everyone has their own idea about oil...A chemical engineer stated to us at a seminar that oil starts to break down at 2k...so, if one changes their oil at 2k you cannot get better protection than that..admittedly that was about 20 years ago and oil technology has improved but I have used that advice ever since and have put over 300k since then on my bikes with no problems....As the saying goes...different strokes for different folks (Dandy Don MNF)

I've been using Castrol GTX 20/50 in both my bikes for about 15 years....I change oil every 2k miles... I wait until its on sale for 99 cents a quart then I buy a couple of cases

I think that dealer is full of sh**... Still sounds like a loose steering head bearing.. This will not cost you a penny....between the handlebars is a big nut...I believe a 1 1/8 SAE will work..Loosen that nut..Under that nut is a spanner nut (notched)..take a long screwdriver, put the blade in a notch of the spanner nut and tap the spanner nut clockwise about a quarter turn or so...if it is still noticeable loose, tighten it some more but just until its snug...tighten the top nut and button it up, your done.... BTW...do this with the bike off the center stand... This should tighten up your steering head...

If it were me with that problem the first thing I'd check would be the tightness of the steering head bearing....

Exhaust leak on 1st Gen
bobcat replied to cjacobs's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Chuck If I remember right, the clamps fit into a slot of some kind...In other words you have to rotate the clamp until it slides or fits into a groove then tighten it down.... -
Rear Brake Master Cylinder
bobcat replied to cjacobs's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Just like third bike came through for cjacobs..... I have had fellow members come through for me when once I was looking for a headlight and another time for a rear brake rotor.... I'd suggest posting ones need or needs on this forum before going to ebay -
Your last post changes the equation..you didn't mention in your first post that you wiped down the bike before you left and the extention was not loose......that makes the probability of it falling off minute and the possibility of a thief getting it more likely....I'd like to think thats not true but unfortunatly that seems to be the reality......

I would like to think that a fellow biker wouldn't steal from a another biker but as the replies indicate those chrome extentions are prone to falling off, and they cost about $100-$160 to replace..If someone lost theirs then that could be enough motive for some low life to steal someone elses...My 86 VR chrome extention was hanging on by a thread when I notice it..I had to reglue cracked plastic with ABS cement and use washers and loctite to replace it correctly...

What gas mileage do you get ?
bobcat replied to greg_in_london's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Not only is speed a major factor determining gas mileage but many forget ones actual style of riding.....How you take off from a stop or how you power out of a turn, how you pass a vehicle etc all are determining factors....I ride like an old man....because I am one -
Plastic repair / higher gears
bobcat replied to CAZCO's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
- my MPG is about 31 - 36 depending on the head winds. Have had Goldwings that got 48 on the back roads, and 45 on interstate. This Venture runs about 1000 -1,200 tighter than a Wing, need to put in higher gears or a sixth one!?!?!?!?!?!?! Thanks for any help or guidance! Caz ***************************************************************** 31-36 mpg is too low in my opinion unless you're fighting a 40-50 mph headwind....Before you dig into the gears I'd do some tune up work like change the plugs, run Sea Foam through the fuel system a few times, sync the carbs, check the diaphrams, check the air filter etc..You should get around 43-44mpg in the twisties/sweepers and 40-42 on the interstate at about 70mph or less -
Plastic repair / higher gears

The first thing you want to do is stop drill the crack...drill a small hole at the very end of the crack, that will stop it from progressing..The fairing is made out of ABS..I use ABS cement that you can buy at any hardware store or Home depot/Lowes etc..I use a toothpick by dipping it in the glue and working it into the crack... -

running a little rough
bobcat replied to PBJ's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
By making plenty of mistakes has taught me to do the cheap fixes first..Replace the plugs first then see where you're at..Check the air filter, check the carbs idle adjustment, sync the carbs, replace the fuel filter etc. This is all stuff that doesn't cost much and will let you know if the problem is superficial or is going to take some digging into... -
that low speed feeling
bobcat replied to Indyventure's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I agree with Bongobob, sounds to me like a classic sign of a loose steering head bearing...No biggee..between the handlebars is a big nut..I can't remember the size but in SAE terms its about 1 1/4"..You'll need the socket that fits..Loosen that nut..Under the nut is a spanner nut (w/notches)..I use a long screwdriver and a rubber mallet and tap that spanner nut in a clockwise direction about 1/4 turn or less..Tighten the top nut and you're on your way...Many will disagree with this method but I've used it several times over the years with different bikes...- 19 replies
