  1. I agree with Condor. Maybe the moderator to can "kill" the thread so that it just drops lower and lower and does not show up in the "new posts" list. Then a poll could be opened to get things going again.
  2. Good idea, just in case this thread dissapears.
  3. Fist fights are no fun for me... I never get to hit anybody more than once.
  4. I would not carry into Canada. I would not even drive a car with an NRA sticker across the border. They (their government) seem to be very hostile to anybody that takes responsibility for their own safety. Now here in the Great state of Texas and other states it is a different story. I have carried when touring by myself. I carry in states besides Texas, but only when my concealed carry permit is recognized in that state. I have never had to use my weapon, or even show it to anybody to get out of a situation. I hope and pray everytime I take it with me that I never have to. I have been glad to have it on more than one occasion though. My only complaint is that it slightly damaged the paint on my tank by vibrating against the paint through the material of the tank bag. The meaning of gun control to me is having a steady aim, and the knowledge of when and where to point the gun.
  5. A job is why I came to Texas 22 years ago. I have not looked back. No income tax, great economy, and reasonable housing prices. I don't know much about Houston except they have great hospitals there and it is the only place I have been with Vietnamese language radio stations to compliment the 5 or 6 spanish language stations. Best of luck. Hope you can deal with the humidity. That is the hardest part for me.
  6. Don't feel picked on. My springs thread also dissapeared also. That said I'm interested in the answer. Four ways would be a great safety enhancement for the RSTD.
  7. 16 miles to work this morning at 32 degrees. The ground was warm enough that there was no ice where the usual suspects left their sprinklers on. It will be in the 60s when I ride home. That's 32 miles in one day, not bad for January 9th. Might even take Mrs. Sweetie to dinner for her birthday on the back of the bike.
  8. Side arms for the passenger? No way am I giving my wife a gun, then putting her behind me!
  9. Your doing the right stuff already. The more you learn about this disease the easier it is to know how to change your own habits and behavior to control it. For me the secret is two fold. First, learn to count the carbs. I found that if I count the carbs I eat (and stop eating when I've had enough) my sugar profile is much better. The other thing is to combine aerobic and resistance training exercise. When I do both, and take my meds (metformin only so far) my blood sugar is 100 or less in the morning, and the highs are never over 140. I have to think of the exercise as a medication. Exercise is probably more important in the long run than taking your meds, as it will help slow the progression of the disease. There are some other tricks, like always eating some protien with your carbs. This slows down the rate at which your body converts the carbs into sugar and helps to keep the blood sugar from climbing so fast. Have a small handfull of peanuts or almonds with your morning cereal. Skip the baked potato and go for the whole wheat bread. The best advice I got was from my father-in-law (who only has an 8th grade education) He said to look at that food just like it was poison. When I thought about that I knew he was right. I have to have it, but if I cheat by eating that candy or cookie I am really poisoning myself. I have lost 40 pounds in the 18 months since he told me that. As long as I have the blessing of a body healthy enough to exercise I think I'll be OK. So keep on learning about it. And look in places with information you can trust like your doctor, or a local support group. Also see if your insurance will pay for education from an American Diabetes Association (ADA) certified diabetes educator. These professionals are usually RNs or dieticians that have additional training and pass stringent certifications to be able to practice their craft. Keep your spirits up, and best of luck.
  10. Here is my thought on the matter. I try to keep an air gauge in every vehicle I own. Once the two kids started driving, then mamma and I both bought recreational vehicles, I ended up with 8 different air gauges laying around. Since I used to evaluate measuring devices when I worked in avaition, I took them all and measured them against a calibrated source then I measured their repeatability and reproducability. Long story not quite so long, the variation was huge. On accuracy against a calibrated source they varied as much as 10 pounds. On repeatability and reproducability the worst of the bunch were good to a tolerance greater than plus or minus 5 pounds. The best was only good to plus or minus 2 pounds. So here's my theory: take a tire gauge that is reading low by 6 pounds, add in variation that could measure low another 5 pounds, and you just overpreasured your tire by as much as 20% cold. Then put the load to it on the road and heat it up a bunch and you could have a tire that is over preasured by 25%. That could add a lot to the stress and possible failure of a tire. Moral of the story, I threw away 5 of the 8 air guages I had and bought 5 new ones. Of these, I check them every year. The real kicker was that the best guage I found was not the most expensive. It was the little Campbell Hausfeld electronic gauge that cost about $10.00. http://www.aircompressorsdirect.com/catalog/images/AU1100_500.jpgThe worst one was a cheap analog gauge with the needle style readout. Buy a good gauge and check it every year. And if it is an electronic one replace the batteries every year. Then when you check your tire pressure always check it two or three times and take the average.
  11. I just took off my 130 front tire and I'm going back to the 150 stock size Avon. This tire is still narrower than the Bridgestone 150 tire that came with my bike. Last year I put the narrow tire on at the same time I installed the leveling links. I'm going back to the stock size tire to see if the links made the difference or the tire. I didn't have any complaints with running both. Just want to see if there is a big difference. Seems to be conventional wisdom on this site to do one or the other. I'll scrub in the tire tomorrow, along with my new stiffer front springs. Hope to do about 150 miles after breakfast in the AM. Might do more after lunch if mamma wants to go for a ride. I'm thinking breakfast at Eagle mountain lake, and lunch in Bowie, Texas. Ride back past Lake Amon G Carter. Course I still have to convince mamma that this is a better use of our time than working on the house or fixing the car, or fixing the ....
  12. They're probably moving to Craig's list. That service reaches lots of people but doesn't charge the big bucks that e-bay charges. Also, it is locataion specific so you don't have to worry about shipping, you can just go pick it up.
  13. Count me in for a PC 545. I'll check in on the 20th to see if you made the goal and to make payment. This is the best price I've seen on the PC 545.
  14. With the new digital TV signals there several of the local TV stations have full time local weather channels. One even has a link to the camera that the ground controllers use at DFW airport so I see what conditions are at the airport from the comfort of my living room. I go past the airport on my way to and from work, so that camera is a good indicator for me.
  15. OK, I'm in. Jack, I sent you a PM with my shipping info. $94.00 was sent to paypal@cast-aways.com
  16. Don, sorry you're feeling down. Don't discount the flu though. The flu shot usually coveres only three or four strains the experts predict may be the most common ones to go around. A bit like predicting the number of hurricanes or the timing of earthquakes. There are many strains that are not covered. Here's hoping that your natural defenses bring you back to healthy.
  17. There are two different configurations of passing lamps. The halogen configuration is a 35watt H3 bulb. I don't know what the other bulb is.
  18. All I know is that when I'm old enough to need a walker it had better have good brakes, cause I ain't slowin' down until the very last possible moment....

    BMW's

The one BMW guy I ride with is a great guy. He doesn't slow down when the road curves, so the rest of the cruiser riders in our church group usually don't invite him on rides because they can't keep up. I like to ride with him when I have time, but when he goes out ridin he ain't coming home for 4-5 hours. I generally can keep pace with him since I switched to Avon tires, but it's a challenge. The guy is a great guy and is a credit to his community.

My mamma always told me that nobody is totally useless. They can always serve as a bad example.
  21. Hey Eck, I have heard your comment before about not swapping types of oil. But others I've talked to say it doesn't make a difference. I lean toward your point of view, but only because it makes sense to pick something good an stick with it. I cant' defend that point of view with any better reason. Can you educate me on why it is best to stick with one type of oil since the manufacturers all say they are compatible with oil of the same ratings?
  22. I have a little different take on that. I believe it works because of Freebird's vision, insistence on civil discourse, and on sticking to the subject of motorcycles. I've been on other sites for other vehicles I own (trucks and cars) looking for much the same stuff I originally came here for. What I found was that this site had spoiled me into expecting that everybody behaved. What I found on those other sites were bullies and trolls just waiting to berate the newby, or to pick a fight with someone that they didn't agree with. The other thing I found were almost non-existent moderators. By that I mean either not there, or no vision for what the site could be. I'll give credit to Freebird for this site's success in that area as well. Not to take away from the fine moderators on this site, but they wouldn't be here if they had not been recruited, massaged and maintained by Mr. Freebird. There is a lot to be said for the leadership that we enjoy here.
  23. I think that makes the bike look better at least. To me that stock Rocket III motor looks more like a tractor engine than a motorcycle engine. I'm sure I'd love it if I had one to ride. Triumph is coming out with a touring edition of the Rocket III. They left off the trunk though.
  24. I rode my bike from Dallas to SLC this summer to see my dad. I stayed at the University of Utah guest house while in SLC so I could have access to a shower and a nice place to have friends visit me. While there I met a gal from Texas in an Army uniform. She came over to talk about bikes when she saw me packing mine for the trip home. She told me about the toy hauler she bought her husband last year. She said after her last tour in Iraq she decided she was never sleeping on the ground again unless in the line of duty. That toy hauler sounded like a nice way to combine biking, camping, and site seeing. I'm going to have to look into one of those toy haulers. So Cliff, if you see me on the road be sure to wave. Let me know next time you get to Dallas/Fort Worth I'll buy you a beer at Willhoits in Grapevine.
  25. I love to ride cross country. 3500 mile road trip, camping along the way, is a great way to see the sites. I told my friend at work that I ride the bike thousands of miles to get to that country, why coup myself up in a motel room when I get there. That said, my better half has a different idea. If I'm going to share some of the greatest motorcycle roads in the country with her, the only way I'm going to do it is to fly us both to the closest airport and rent a bike, or trailer the bike I have to a bed and breakfast nearby and make the ride a day trip. That's my reality. Mamma is very understanding when I take off alone cross country on two wheels. Sometimes that is just what I need. But if I wanted to spend my life alone I would not have married the gal. I'm just sayin....
