Hagon vs Works Rear Shock
djb47 replied to ablumny's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
:cool10:Just returned from a 4,000 mile ride to Canada and back on my new Works Shock. Ride was very smooth and not bouncy and felt very different at first but either the shock got "broken in" or my bottom got use to the ride. Do not regret going with the Works even if a bit more pricey. -
Need a poll for second gen rear shock
djb47 replied to CaptainJoe's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
My 99 RSV shock gave out at 62,000, and I ended up replacing with one from Works. Just got back from 4,000 mile 12 day trip from KY to Canada and back. With their rough roads up north I was very glad to have the new shock under me. By the way Canada is a great ride but kind of pricey with the weak dollar. -
Rear mono-shock replacement questions:
djb47 replied to Semi-retired's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Just got my new Works shock this week. No they are not air adjustible, I don't think they are adjustible at all except raising or lowering the spring. You tell them what setting you want when you order. -
Hagon vs Works Rear Shock
djb47 replied to ablumny's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I called the one company who has their shocks made in England and did not seem like they wanted to do a shock with a max load over about 350 lbs. So if you ride two up and or with gear (rider at 200+) they weren't a market. I ordered one from works with extra heavy spring and got it this week. Looks very well made but is not adjustible so will have to ride as is. We are leaving next week for Nova Scotia so I should have a good deal to tell when I get back. Along that line, any help you can give regarding installation whould be a big help as my mechanic is a sort of shade tree mechanic and I don't think he has replaced a shock on this particular model:backinmyday: of bike. -
Why don't you call them and tell them you want a shock for an RSV rated for 450 lbs and see what they say. When I spoke to them they did not seem to want to push the manufacturer and get a max weight.
-
Ron, they did not offer anything, just said the weight was too much for their part. The american dealer seemed very putout with them and said they (English) have no concept of customer service.

I contacted Dave Quinn Motorcycles about the Hagon shocks and they said they would need the rider weight, passenger weight and baggage weight in order to tell me if they could build a shock for me. I gave them a total weight of 500 lbs and they said too much weight for their shock. They will not tell you what the load capacity is, but it seems to be some where around 350 lbs total. I don't know many riders with passenger and luggage that could come in under 350lbs (maybe Bangladesh). I checked the links on this posting and they are all over $500. now, and that is for OEM parts that will have the same problems as the one we have now. I went ahead and bit the bullet and got the Works shock for around $700.00 that can be rebuilt if needed. They only have the manual adjustment feature, but I never used the air adjustment on mine anyway. Looking forward to see how much difference this makes in the ride.

So far two riders on a western trip from Ky to rockies and back 4500 miles in 12 days. One day trip was Durango, Co to Azrec, NM to Taos, NM to Trinadad, Co to Dodge City KS in about 15 hours total of 650+ miles, with no interstate riding. This was right in the middle tof the trip.

We are heading for NS the middle of July and would love any information you can give us. We are planning to crossover from Maine to NS by ferry if possible. I don't see many maps but looks like there are limited roads so maybe they are few in number. Any help or information you could provide would be very helpful.:cool10:

I have been looking for a replacement for the rear shock for my 99 RSV. After much searching I contacted Dave Quinn motorcycles and can purchase a new rebuildable shock for around $400 with manual preload adjuster or $554 with remote adjuster. this is for the standard shock or $464 manual or $624 with remote adjuster for the heavy duty. I have ordered the manual heavy duty for $464. and was told I could add the remote feture later if I wanted to. Will keep you informed after installed and used. We are also planning a trip to Nova Scotia in July and find very little information about roads and sites to see, so any Canada members that can give me a heds up would be great!

My 99 RSV had the same problem and the dealer replaced the bottom trunk under warranty so I am not sure if there is a time limit on a recall.
-
Don't know if I have my facts right or not, but my understanding was that because the RSV is not FI, they will not be able to sell after model year 2010 or 2011. Also was told that any changes (like tape deck out and CD palyer in) would result in them (Yamaha) having to apply for a new import license. Not sure how much if any of this is true, just what I was told. I have a 99 RSV and plan to ride till the wheeles fall off!

Dennis, I am having the passing lights installed on my 99 RSV next week, but would like to keep open the option of replacing the lamps with something brighter. Please keep my in the loop on what you find out and decide to use. Thanks and looking forward to getting together this summer for some rides.

Looks like you will miss our beautiful state all together! The ride through IL and IN will look a lot alike (flat and lots of corn fields). If you change your route and come through Lexington, KY (home of the UK Wildcats) (Go Big Bule) you will pass through some of the most beautiful horse country in the world. I can also provide food and lodging as well as sites to see. Let me know if you change your route and come our way.

Sometimes (but not aways) I have a hard time getting the gas cap off my 99 RSV. I have to turn the key and then try to grip the cap with the other hand while turning the key to get it to release. The bib around the opening seems to keep the cap from going down all the way, but not sure. Any ideas would be helpful.

I never put up my 99 RSV (plum & silver) just ride when the weather permits. Last year we rode over the Rockies and temp ranged from 70's to 20's and back. Best investment I have ever made was an electric vest to go under my jacket. Temp control was lo, med and hi and I never got off lo. I grew up in Etown and there are some great rides in the area. If going to Burbon distillers be sure to see Makers Mark in Loretto, KY south of Bardstown. When you get back, drop me a note and let me know how the ride went.

As some of you may know I have been fighting the busted trunk bag problem for a couple of months now and am close to having completed (purchased used bottom on e-bay for $200.00, having to dismantle the backrest, replace the broken bracket welded to fram for bottom screws). All that is left is to attach the frabrecated bracket to the bike frame and put the screws through the metal and rubber plates in the bottom of the trunk bag. Just learned today (after reading a reply to a post from last week) that this is a Yahama recall and they will fix (don't know if they just furnish the plaltes or replace the trunk or what but am taking the busted bottom and license receipt to the local dealer to see what is involved). Just wanted to alert any other 99 owners to check with a dealer first if you have this problem (wish I had checked first).

Just an update on the continuing saga of replacing the broken trunk bottom on my ride. I was able to secure a matching bottom from e-bay (with the help of FreezyRider). It was listed for $400.00, I offered $100.00 and purchased for $200.00. Ordered the kit for the new bottom which is just a metal plate for the top and a rubber one for the bottom. I JB Welded the metal plates to the inside and went about removing the old trunk. Lesson # 1, remove all screws and bolts that you can see first. We ended up taking the speakers apart becasuse we did not realize the screws holding the brackes for the inside net pocket also held the trunk to the backrest. I must say I am very disapointed in the quality (or lack therof) for the plates welded to the frame that the anchor screws going through the bottom to hold the trunk to the frame. It's not metal and not plastic but breaks like plastic and we had to cut off the right side plate and are trying to frabricate something to replace it with. This is for sure a two person job, just getting the hinges from the top fastened to the bottom ( you have to have the lid partly closed to get it to aline but partly open to line up the screws coming from the outside). Will keep you informed as to progress. Just want to say I would not have known where to start without all the great help from this web site, you guys are the best support group since Woddy Allen in Everything You Wanted to Know about Sex but were Afraid to Ask (for all us old timers who remember the movie)!!!!

As I stated earlier this month I discovered the prior owner of my 99 RSV had busted out the bottom of the trunk and several of the screws had or were pulling throught the holes. Joe was kind enought to hook me up with an e-bay add for a replacement in the correct color ( got it for $200.00). It just arrived and I noticed some very fine hair line cracks on the bottom of this one also (but not all the way through. Joe also gave me a web site to get different fastners that have rubber and metal reinforcements (hope they work). I am worndering if I should put down a layer of epoxy or something to reinforce the bottom prior to instillation. Any thoughts would be welcome.

Purchased 99 Venture and found prior owner covered up anchors that attach the box to the frame. Several of the screws have pulled through the plastic bottom and it has several cracks and small holes where the plastic has broken. Joe has put me in touch with an offer on e-bay that has a bokttom for sale in the correct color (plum and silver) but they are asking $400.00 for it. Anyone who has a box for 2nd gen for sale?

Joe, Keep me posted. As soon as you set a date let me know, would love to get together again.

Has anyone read about the Dunlop Sport max Q2? From the article I read sounds like a good tire for sport touring and touring as the middle compound is hard rubber with soft sholders for cornering. Will be out in market summer of 09 and no mention of price. I too would like more than 8-10 thousand miles from a set of tires. With autos getting 50-75 thousand you would think a motorcycle should get at least half of that.

jrcain32, We just got back from our ride to Deals Gap, CSW, Devils Triangle, Cherokee, Blue Ridge Parkway, Maggie Vally, Pisgah Natioal Forest (great restaurant at the Pisgah Lodge) then back up to Crossville. The Devils Trangle is a better ride than Deals Gap in my opinion but is a little out of the way (best to refer to a Mad Map for TN). The scenery is breathtaking (if you have any left after the Dragons Tail and Devils Triangle). We wanted to do the Witches Knuckle but ran out of time. Good luck and ride safe.

Would like to order a set. I think they will look grreat on my 99 Gray and Plum RSV! If you need to hold for another full order I am OK with that, just so I get them sooner or later.
