FUNNY, I just installed that very same vent from the sample place for my Clearview medium shield. Not sure about the factory shield thickness but the clearview is too thick for the two halves to clip together, one half on each side of the shield. I had to put a drum sander on my dremel and thin out parts of the half that slips into the other half. (hard to explain)...but if you have a CLearview be prepared for customization.... http://lh6.ggpht.com/_9EMyKcng_yA/TC8lzzR3thI/AAAAAAAADoU/NCbJu3-WCPY/s800/P6230823.JPG http://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/FuubbOYc0SbrrvJrVEu__g?feat=directlink http://lh4.ggpht.com/_9EMyKcng_yA/TC8lxmd2BXI/AAAAAAAADn8/9n2ZfJ3E_ko/s800/P6230817.JPG http://lh4.ggpht.com/_9EMyKcng_yA/TC8lx7JtDSI/AAAAAAAADoA/C0eA3fFEmt4/s800/P6230818.JPG http://lh6.ggpht.com/_9EMyKcng_yA/TC8lyYF53yI/AAAAAAAADoE/Zo4M2V5j1HE/s800/P6230819.JPG http://lh5.ggpht.com/_9EMyKcng_yA/TC8l0QqY7-I/AAAAAAAADoY/J03ZEWmoyWc/s800/P6230824.JPG http://lh4.ggpht.com/_9EMyKcng_yA/TC8l0vMuTZI/AAAAAAAADoc/aYgDY5ARFjI/s800/P6230825.JPG http://lh3.ggpht.com/_9EMyKcng_yA/TC8l0yQsjxI/AAAAAAAADog/_da5jwswhgk/s800/P6230826.JPG

With floor problem solved, Im on to plumbing. I need to replace what I now know is a not to code S trap under my tub. No vent off the trap is apparently the issue. However its original to the house and in the 14 years Ive been here, have never had an issue with smell or draining. My plan is to cut this mess off of the 1.5", 4' pipe that runs into the main vent/drain. To that, solder on a threaded adapter. Then run a new PVC S-Trap in the same config as the old copper. The connection to the 1.5" brass drain from the tub would be a compression fitting. Anyone have advice, better idea? thx.... (New Dunlop E3's coming btw!) http://lh4.ggpht.com/_9EMyKcng_yA/TC0NGSAd0uI/AAAAAAAADmw/zeQAYABSlwQ/s800/P7010849.JPG http://lh5.ggpht.com/_9EMyKcng_yA/TC0NGuG96oI/AAAAAAAADm0/CePwNfUNSCI/s800/P7010850.JPG

Very glad to have read this thread. My rear factory Bridgestone has about had it and based on this thread and others, I ordered a set of E3's from Motorcycle Superstore who had the best price and ha already emailed me the tracker. I have put my own tires on prior bikes but they all had tubes. Anyone have trouble getting the beads to seat on our 2nd gens?

Thx for the advice. Im going to repair the rotted areas, leave the rest, then new 3/4" over everything, then Durarock. That will solve this problem. BUT I have a new problem! The drywall on the ceiling has some mold on it. I was intending on pulling down the drywall and putting up greenboard...until I went in my attic to check on a wiring plan and was reminded I had blown in insulation put in last year; the recycled and treated newspaper type of stuff. My attic is not tall, cant stand in it so imagine its 90 degrees outside, kneeling in a 100+ degree attic with roofing nails above you hitting your head while you attempt to rake insulation out of each joist bay. It got real nasty real fast. So now Im wondering if I can spray some kind of mold killer (again) and greenboard over the existing sheet rock?? Thoughts? thx again andrew
-
Actually, regarding floor height, I removed a ~2" concrete and wire mesh base (old school) so even with 1/2" existing, 3/4" new plus durarock, I'd be about back to where I was. Yes, Im thinking existing rotted areas will be cut out, replaced with new 1/2", then 3/4" over it all. Thanks guys.

Thanks Guys. Craig, If I understand, your suggestion is to lay a 2x6 or 2x8 on the flat with a portion under the wall plate, secured with screws thru the wall plate and on the other side thru the joists. If so, thats brilliant and I can do that in just about all bays. Beer30: Good questions. Thx. Of the four walls, one is an outside wall. One runs perpendicular to the joists, the other two walls that run parallel to the floor joists happen to be sitting on top of floor joists however none of the three are supporting anything above them. The one perpendicular inside wall to the floor joists is not load bearing. Anyway, I can do a lot of what you (and Craig) suggested. I have room to put cross joists in. Along the two walls where the joists run parallel, Very little in the way as far as in floor plumbing and electrical (lucky). Here is a drawing of the room. THe red line is the outside of the bathroom. THe Yellow line is the inside of the room down to the studs. THe gray "boxes" on the outside and inside walls are craigs idea. The longer grey "boxes" along the two parallel walls are new joists I'd hang off of a new cross joist. http://lh3.ggpht.com/_9EMyKcng_yA/TCYLFmfemMI/AAAAAAAADmY/rpBLHxOGuJU/s512/bath.jpg I had a contractor in here yesterday (for other reasons). He suggested I not tear up the existing 1/2" plywood. Although mildly rotted near the toilet and under the tub, it was dry and not moldy. He might patch up those areas, then go over it all with new 3/4" plywood then top it with Durarock. This is a lot easier! What do you think? andrew

Not bike related ! Im in the middle of a 2nd floor bathroom remodel. The walls are demo'd back to the studs. The floor down to the plywood sub floor. I didnt expect to have to replace the plywood sub-floor but it's rotted enough that the whole floor need to be replaced. I have a very good understanding of floor and wall construction but Im looking for advice from better educated people on the subject. The sub floor obviously extends under the walls. Do I cut the plywood flush against the walls or do I come into the room a bit? I imagine if I come into the room a bit, I'll need to support the edges of the old and new plywood with new framing between each joist and somehow along the side where the joist run parallel to the walls. If I cut the plywood flush against the stud walls, I dont see how I'd support the edges. Any experts have advice? Id appreciate it . Thx Andrew

Sirius for me for years. Went on Ebay, bought an older model with a dock, on the cheap. Handlebar Ram mount keeps it in place. Magnetic antenna sitting on top of the brake res. Not sure if this is right but I read that XM satellites are newer and follow a different orbit resulting in better audio. I had a friend come over with XM in his car and I have to agree. Sirius in my car sounded sort of muffled when compared but Im not changing out hardware now.... http://lh6.ggpht.com/_9EMyKcng_yA/SgcFULDy9SI/AAAAAAAAB8I/mrvrkKRSGRk/s640/P5100249.JPG

Hope this helps those cagers see me! http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:cCvz7yGnBJen9M:http://www.motogearoutlet.com/images/product/Intake2HiVis.jpg

Handling on my Venture
ablumny replied to rumboogy's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
This thread and the described problem got me thinking about my handling complaints that I never did anything about. SO, I jack the bike and sure as sure the handlebars swing left to right like they are riding on slick 50. I get in there with a screwdriver and am able to tighten the steering bearing nut a bit more then 1/4 turn. On to the air in the shocks. I happen to have an air shock pump but never used it, never checked the air pressure in my shocks. measured 0 in the rear and 5 in the front. Bumped the rear to 30 and took the front to 0. then bumped tire pressure up to the advised 40 front, 42 rear. BIG difference for sure. Im guessing going from 0 to 30# in the rear shock is sort of like adding the leveling links? The handling is so different. Thanks for the great advice! ( I need a "maintenance day" on long island ! ) -
I also have a GPS and a Sat Radio on my 2nd Gen. I wanted the radio to be on and the GPS to talk to me at the same time. Simply splitting the signals lowered the overall volume. I came up with a way to isolate each output and overcome that problem but I couldnt control the volume of each device satisfactorily. My final solution was to make my own simple mixer. The whole story can be seen in this thread: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?p=348263#post348263 If you have some technical ability, this was easy to do, rewarding and it has worked great since I did it. I can individually adjust volume of each device with no loss of total volume.

Well, two days in the shop and no trouble found! No excess drain on the battery when the key is off and a perfectly working charging system on a new battery. The thing started for them multiple times under multiple conditions. So frustrating! For some reason the garage didnt charge me anything though!
-
Thanks guys. The mechanic checked all switchable lights, all of them function correctly and aren't staying on. The cigarette lighter is shutting off as it should when the key is off. He says the charging system is functioning correctly. He said something about a defective alternator thats charges correctly, staying in a position when the engine stops, that may cause a drain. There's somethign causing an intermitant and quick discharge.

Appreciate that Freebird. I dont think I'll have to beg for help . I like this guy at the garage I found and it's 1 mile away on the same road as the college. What complicates the problem, aside from me being 300 miles away, is that she expects to turn the key and drive all the time without fail and anytime there is any hint of an issue you;d think she'd was just delivered life altering news! She eats my heart out !! KIDS!
-
Unbelievable! I run up there two weekends ago, buy a new battery, get the charging system tested (ok) as best I could from the local auto parts guy and a week later the new battery is dead. Since the charging system is putting out over 14v all the time, I assume there is a drain on the system when the key is off somewhere. Fortunately I hooked up with a garage a mile from the college and (Marhts) and he's been accommodating. She says the dome light is in in the off position and didnt leave the headlights on. Everything else is dead when the key is off. ARGH!

Appreciate that Bob! Thanks Andrew

ah. Someday I may need to ask a local VentureRider to bail me out and help me handle the next auto crises my daughter has up there !

Hello NY's!. My daughter attends Keuka College, on Keuka Lake. Closest real town is Penn Yan. Any members from the area? This area is about an hour south of Rochester, 30 mins SE of Canandaigua, 30 mins SW of Geneva. Anyway, I had to run up there (from Long Island) to solve a car problem this weekend for her. (long story) While I was driving around to find the local CarQuest, I saw a beautiful Gold first gen on the driveway of a Penn Yan home. Anyones here? I saw a couple of 2nd Gens lined up at a Penn Yan gas/food mart with 20 other bikes as well on Saturday.

Bad motorcycle crash in Phoenix, several dead

I dont usually comment on these things, mourn a story like this in private but this is one of the sadest things ive seen. I think about these guys enjoying their ride and then this, I am sick. Part of the irony is they were on Carefree Highway. -
Repacked my BUB's today (pics/video)

DONE and much better! Thanks Mike. I repacked using the fiberglass mat only. Its hard to tell the real story via video but here's the comparison: [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eFAL3Dt963g]YouTube- Venture BUB Mufflers RE-Repacked[/ame] -
Repacked my BUB's today (pics/video)
ablumny replied to ablumny's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
YA, I have seconded guess this whole plan at this point ! The fact is the Moose kit isnt really designed for normal bikes as it is for atv's, race bikes. You comments make sense. After running them a bit more today (and outside of my garage, it was pouring yesterday) I can say they are softer then I thought yesterday BUT I agree with your assessment of the screen and stainless mat material and will repack them today with just the fiber glass mat for which I have plenty! Now that I've done it once, I can see how easy it was and the material to buy for next time. Anyone else planning to do this to your BUB's, I'd follow the pictorial for repacking on the venturers site but use Mikes advise on material. I happen to like the black tip look. Thanks. I'll post another sound test later. -
The BUB's on my 03 RSV had been getting louder and this season the packing must have eaten itself because they sound louder then ever. On the Venturers site someone posted a pictorial on how to repack them and what to buy, which I did. I also took this opp to paint the peeling chrome tips flat black. I bought two kits from Moose Products, $25 each. Each kits comes with stainless steel screen material, stainless steel padding and a lot of fiberglass matting. For Bub's, there is way more then enough fiberglass material in one kit for both mufflers but not enough of the other material. It did come with replacement rivets, that was appreciated. $50 though? Not again. Anyway, it was easy, only requiring the rubber mallet and a good amount of persuasion to get the baffle out of the shell but they eventually gave way, then the tips popped off the baffles easily. I expected better results through. I admit that was part of my prob too. At the height I ordered, the curve portion was in my line of sight. Cleaview insists the recurve shouldn't have a visual affect and for that reason, they were willing to bypass their normal return rules and take care of me. At the time I didnt want to order a taller shield, rethinking it now.

Gauges Not Working?????
ablumny replied to StarRider07's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Agree, it takes a while before the water temp gauge starts to register. If you've waited long enough, sounds like somethings wrong. As far as the oil pressure gauge, I had the same prob, the oil line wasnt filling and the gauge wasnt working. I pulled the line from the gauge, ran the bike until the oil line filled, then quickly re connected it and the gauge worked fine afterwards. Kinda like bleeding the line I guess. Im told later on that that wasnt necessary, but it seemed to work. Good luck
