  1. I followed jlh3rd's and V7Goose's posts on the subject. FANTASTIC data and THANK YOU to both plus everyone that added to their posts with tips, tricks and improvements. I started the project and have the 1/8" x 27 NPT TAP and the HELP! 42009 Spark Plug Non Fouler available to someone who needs it. (see V7GOOSE's post) Neither "tool" is particularly hard to find or expensive but I'll never use either again and try to give back where possible. I am willing to ship it to someone who needs them. PM me if you need it, I'll even cover shipping. Send it to someone else when your done!? Anyway: Everything is prepped on the gauges. Based on forum member tips: - Went with Mechanical gauges - Ordered 1/4" black ABS (from an eBay auction) to make my gauge bezel - Bought auto hose to cover the oil line to prevent an exhaust pipe issue I'll post a picture of the final product when done. In the meantime, if you're thinking about diving in, it was simple to get started: WATTS parts from Lowes and everything else from AID AUTO http://lh5.ggpht.com/_9EMyKcng_yA/Sj64PKtyDVI/AAAAAAAACK4/aVoDWufRPy4/s512/P6210533.JPG M20 Oil Drain plug, drilled and tapped with A712 elbow. Drill press comes in handy. Yep, Teflon tape b4 install. The rest from the gauge kit http://lh3.ggpht.com/_9EMyKcng_yA/Sj64PaRLU6I/AAAAAAAACK8/0UFeQIT9zkA/s512/P6210534.JPG A213 adapter (left), rethreaded with Non-Fouler. The rest came with the gauge kit http://lh3.ggpht.com/_9EMyKcng_yA/Sj64QC1kujI/AAAAAAAACLE/G3_qDtZPG_Y/s512/P6210537.JPG My personal pref. SunPro 1.5" gauge kit. Got these from PepBoys, $35 http://lh4.ggpht.com/_9EMyKcng_yA/Sj64QkYTREI/AAAAAAAACLI/5fv-PrSKjTA/s512/P6210539.JPG Unused parts. Far left are two Non-Foulers and the tap below http://lh6.ggpht.com/_9EMyKcng_yA/Sj642gKRNiI/AAAAAAAACLQ/qRpWORpAySA/s512/P6210540.JPG Hope this helps someone!
  2. Thanks. Im thinking Ill just get the links.
  3. THanks. I figured the ride would be hard but also hoped that a temporary increase in air pressure would simulate what the links would do before investing. Seems so. thx again
  4. The links raise the rear of the bike a bit, thus improving handling. I get it. When I was messing with the rear shock air pressure, I crapped a brick when the back of the bike jolted up when I applied air to the shock. Luckily I only got it to 50psi. So the question is, if pumping air into the shock raises the bike, does that have the same affect as changing the links?

  6. The subject was splitting the AUX input between two devices. With just a splitter, there are all sorts of noise volume and clarity issue plus possible device damage. My prior fix sort of worked. Im not sure if it was so many adapters and connection points or something else but the while the volume split worked it didn't work consistently. Different power sequencing between the two devices would often yield different volume levels. The solution was suggested to me by a friend; a passive mixer with ground loop isolators. Parts from RadioShack for less than $15 for the mixer parts and $12 each for the isolators from Walmart it works great. Complete output separation between the two devices, crystal clear, with an easy way to adjust the levels between the two. I chose to have access to the knobs but I suspect it could be a set it and forget it type thing as well. I also chose to hard wire right to the Audio Pots but a bigger box could support panel mounted 1/8" mini plugs. I just wanted to eliminate all possible adapter failures. There are small 4 channel passive mixers from partsexpress.com for $50. This device (plus the schematics to build one) is at http://www.parts-express.com/pdf/245-042.pdf. Hope it helps someone. http://lh4.ggpht.com/_9EMyKcng_yA/SjDctwk4Z-I/AAAAAAAACAM/y05-ad9EBKk/s512/P6100356.JPG http://lh5.ggpht.com/_9EMyKcng_yA/SjDcuEv0gDI/AAAAAAAACAQ/V4pG6r0ACYM/s512/P6100357.JPG http://lh3.ggpht.com/_9EMyKcng_yA/SjDcuXRp5ZI/AAAAAAAACAU/QynoIgLJdX8/s512/P6100358.JPG http://lh3.ggpht.com/_9EMyKcng_yA/SjDdBzujydI/AAAAAAAACAk/0DtvukpU3TE/s512/P6100361.JPG http://lh6.ggpht.com/_9EMyKcng_yA/SjDdCDjZnII/AAAAAAAACAo/QtXPJCDwzvk/s512/P6100362.JPG http://lh3.ggpht.com/_9EMyKcng_yA/SjDdCWeB8AI/AAAAAAAACAs/A-BinhkvnDc/s512/P6100363.JPG http://lh6.ggpht.com/_9EMyKcng_yA/SjL5OSwWHwI/AAAAAAAACBU/TUO08l_tWuo/s512/P6120377.JPG
  7. Its a beauty! Looking at eBay comps, good deal too. Congrats!
  8. Related question: When I picked up my venture, the previous owner tossed in a headset/mic set-up but just one. It plugs into the factory connector (front or rear) and the speakers work, I assume the mic works as well. Can I buy a single matching setup that plugs into the factory connector and works with the factory system? There's no labels on the one I have.
  9. I used a meter to figure out where the headlight line was but I am sorry I cant recall the location or color. It was on the same side as the cigarette lighter. I forget if the cigarette lighter is switched or not but if it is, then why not pull from there
  10. Ive had mine on for about 500 miles and it hasn't moved on it's own. Pressure must keep it in place. As a matter of fact, I like that I can reach back, pull the backrest forward a bit and make on the fly adjustments if I need to; and after a while it the saddle I sometimes do!
  11. 5' 10" 30" inseam 280# (yea, yea) 05 Midnight Venture 20+year rider So I recently moved from an 1100 VSTAR to the 05 Venture. - The Venture is smooth and comfortable. - First bike where I wont have to buy a Corbin Seat (although they are awesome). - First bike my wife WANTS to ride with me on. - Way plenty power riding two up - Easy to maintain on your own if thats your thing - Added Bub Slip-on's, sounds great and can still hear the awesome sound system - Storage space amazes me every time I load up but... - Yep, took a while to get used to the new dynamics of this much heavier bike. After a short bit of time with it, u-turns no prob again but it is heavy and I felt and still feel like I cant toss it around the twisties like I did my Vstar. I'm reasearching the "fixes" here. - I like the bigger tank but because I cant help but beat on it (smooth and fast is tough to ignore) I'm getting ~33mpg I have no idea about the comparison to your Harley but the Venture stand on it's own as a great deal and a great local and long distance rider. ....and everyone knows Midnights are better!
  12. Huh? Drilled an extra hole where? Moved it in which direction?
  13. I can see that problem. The adjustments are up and down yes, but the forward and back adjustment is really only changing the angle of the backrest around a stationery point. The position of bracket is stationery and even with the adjustment screw all the way out and the backrest leaning all the way back towards the rear of the bike, the bottom of the it is still pretty much in the same spot. http://lh3.ggpht.com/_9EMyKcng_yA/Sh5xDAhMYmI/AAAAAAAAB-0/SlMhvlocUIk/s512/P5270279.JPG YamaDuck: by whacking the bracket and opening the angle of it, didnt you wind up pushing the top part, the point where the backrest connects to the bracket too far into the rear seat? STILL, an awesome product!
  14. Update: Ship date 5/26, received 5/27. Nice. The instructions say 5 mins, it took 10 Great unit. Lots of adjustability and feels very stable. Very much recommended. http://lh5.ggpht.com/_9EMyKcng_yA/Sh2_-PH3NeI/AAAAAAAAB9c/hGxMlSTCfas/s512/P5270281.JPG http://lh5.ggpht.com/_9EMyKcng_yA/Sh2_-cy-h0I/AAAAAAAAB9g/fJMqdyOk0_k/s512/P5270280.JPG http://lh3.ggpht.com/_9EMyKcng_yA/Sh2_-4bGlBI/AAAAAAAAB9k/Mdqp2KkJfrU/s512/P5270276.JPG http://lh5.ggpht.com/_9EMyKcng_yA/Sh2_99fwJGI/AAAAAAAAB9Y/7cb2tDsQd4Q/s512/P5270282.JPG
  15. I have a MIO C520 for the longest time. Worked great, nice and small and easy to plot my own routes however not sunlight readable, not rugged and not watertight. Be careful buying a unit made for a car is my point. Based on what I read here, I went with a refurbed Garmin 2720. They are all over eBay, I paid $110 and it looks like it came from the factory, complete with everything it;s supposed to come with. Positives: I can see it! It recalculates super fast. It's waterproof. It's rugged. It's glove friendly. It has a wide screen display with extra map data off to the right. It can speak the street names in a few pleasent voices. I love the Garmin PC software that allows me to create routes on my PC and dump them into the Garmin and since the Garmin takes standard GPS Map files, I can also download existing ride maps I stumble on. OVerall great unit for the money. Negatives: 2720 doesnt have a battery. It doesnt have an internal speaker which is worthless on a bike anyway but the 12VDC cigarette adapter included has the speaker built in, but also useless on a bike. However, Garmin sells a cable kit that'll allow for hard wired power plus output to your bikes sound system. It doesnt have a docking station. Connection has to be made and unmade each time you remove the unit. The cable kit can include the cradle if you get the right one. It's larger then todays units (specifically deeper then I like). Anyway.... There are a few Garmin models in this category, 2730, 2820 for example. Check eBay and do a search here on the forums. Hope that helps.
  16. Ordered mine from Utopia two weeks ago for my 03 Midnight Venture. Ship date is May 26. Looking forward to it. Back takes a beating after a while. I'll put up a pick and review when I get it on.
  17. Cant argue with that at all.
  18. Just wanted to thank the members of the forum and the moderators. I've had my 03 RSV for a week, have received plenty of great information here and gladly paid my dues. This bike had been popping headlight fuses almost daily. I had started taking the normal diagnostic paths of disabling external devices, tracing power leads for accessories, still the popping fuses. Carrying an allen key and box of fuses in my pocket was the norm. Before going down the path of a more detailed diagnoses or takign it to the dealer, I decided to do a search on "headlight" here and stumbled across a problem that seems to plague many who have the added passing lamp kit; pinched wires in the steering head stop and that is my problem! Repired the connection, wire tied it back and problem solved. Again, thank you all for your contributions to the site. Without, I may have spent many more hours and dollars on this one. Andrew
  19. Actually, I studied your schematics before taking this route. I'm not that smart to know what to do with your drawings and none of my engineering pals would volunteer! thx
  20. I recently mounted a Garmin 2720 GPS to my recently acquired 03 RSV and connected into the AUX input. Lots of background humming was solved with a Radio Shack ground loop isolator. I then split the audio out from the 2720 and my Satellite radio with standard 1/8" splitters. The 2720 is mono out and is cutting out one channel from the satellite radio when both are on. Just being connected and not on, the 2720 is messing up the satallite badly. I had hoped to share the AUX input as I did on my prior ride with an aftermarket audio system. I see many expensive solutions talked about here. I also picked up on a few inexpensive idea (thx guys). But after speaking with an engineering type friend of mine, he came up with an easy plug and play affordable solution. It was simple and it works: - Simply put a Ground Loop Isolator on the output of both devices that will share the AUX input of the factory radio. A number of adapters are required to make the transitions from headphone type jacks to the RCA types of the Ground Loop Isolator and back to headphone jack of the AUX input. Everything is Radio Shack available. Wall Mart has the Isolators for $13.50 by me ($18 @ Radio Shack). - In my case, since the Garmin 2720 is mono out, I also had to get a 1/32" mono - 1/8" stereo adapter. - In all I spent ~$40 for the connection hardware, no soldering, just plugs and wire ties. Hows it work? - Adjust the bike volume to a comfortable level and the device output volumes of both units so that the GPS is comfortably louder than the other device, in my case the satellite radio. - Although I have to crank up the bikes volume slightly more than I used to, it sounds just as good as it did before and when it GPS time, she chimes in nicely. Hope it helps... _______________
  21. The 03 RSV I just bought came with a CD changer thats integrated liek the factory one and an spare long looking cable. You are welcome to it for free, just the shipping if you think you can use it.
  22. sorry, i messed this post up! see http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=35536
  23. Lake George Area is awesome riding and it a short trip into Vermont riding
  24. Interesting comment. Sorry to hi Jack this thread. I just picked up an 03 RSV and the brakes squeal bad. Im sorry they do bad glad I see this is a common issue. Recomended replacement pads?
  25. I think we rode about an hour off Cabot Trail to get to the end and Meat Cove.
