  4. ya, the waving thing is interesting. I dont think he was so serious about it and I wave to anyone but Ive been passed by plenty of guys that dont bother.... "whatev" as my kids say
  5. I think I could have rented a GoldWing but I wanted to try a Harley. Like I said, I wont go out and buy one but I wont let the personal anti Harley feelings continue... and yes, PAcific Coast Highway (1) is beautiful and I only covered a small portion of it!
  6. The Story: I travel on business all over N. America but rarely get to stop and see where I am and whats going on in the places I stay. I recently had an afternoon available in San Jose CA and decided I'd rent a bike. I convinced a friend of mine to take the afternoon off and the plan was set. He rides a Harley Ultra Glide or something like that and apparently its not all that easy to rent anything but a Harley so thats what I did, I rented an 06 Electra-Glide. Renting: The rental place was fun. Too older folks, Harley lovers, riders for sure, own the place but they were actually from the next town over from where I live back home so that was cool. Thier mechanic who takes you through a "pre-rent" check list was a young "its Harley or nothing" kind of bad-butt who thought he eyed me up correctly as being out of my element as a rider and no way I could handle this "very heavy" bike. Despite my explanantion that I ride a Venture of similar size and weight he insisted on talking to me like I was a newb and this'll probably be my last day on earth.....but here's the key anyway! The Bike: The bike wasnt a bad ride while it was rolling but at a stop, you could lose a filling it was vibrating so much. The transmission sort of loudly "snaps" into every gear, the controls are so far out of place (at least for me), I didnt like the signals being separated on the handle bar and the radio controls were unusable while riding (but the sound quality was great). The way the luggage covers opened was also a pain and a poor design in my opinion. I definitely dont like the keyless gigantic knobby looking think that you turn to start it. The gauges were nice and well placed and the stock seat was just fine. Power? I couldn't find it. Its big heavy bike (as heavy as a Venture) and Im a big guy, but still it didnt compare in any gear at any RPM to my Venture. Overall it, despite all the bike observations, it wasn't as bad a ride as I expected. Id never spend the money to buy one ($23K base model) and was very happy to immediately jump on my Venture when I got back. I do have a slightly better respect for Harleys now The Ride: Our ride took us North from San Jose, East side of the Bay, on roads I cant remember but were beautiful. Saw San Quentin, Golden Gate Bridge, Pacific Coast Highway and places along the coast. Just amazing and I will do it all again ! The "wave": My die-hard Harley riding friend and I joked all day about the "waving" policy of bikers. I asked if it;s ok as a Harley rider to wave to a non-Harley cruiser rider. Flat out "no"! (but with a smile). Certainly not to Gold Wing riders and sport bikes and while I wasnt sure I swear he turns his head whenever he sees a BMW . I made the HUGE mistake of not only waving to every bike I passed but I waved to a Goldwing Trike! GASP. I though he'd abandon me right then and there! 10. Yep, I went with an LED LCD but smaller. No doubt hard to sell but for under $500, someones getting a huge HD TV and thats still a good deal if you want it and cash is tight.
  11. Not sure where to put this. Please move if necessary. I am selling my 62" HDTV on eBay http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270462271174&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT If your local and intrested let me know. $500 and motivated thx andrew
  12. Well this problem has disappeared. I cant decide what did it, cleaning all the ball joint or adding MotorKote but its fixed. Thx for the advice.
  13. ~200 miles with 8oz update. No change in gas mileage, no change in the engine whine and no change in how it shifts.
  14. "bent shifter forks in the tranny"
  15. Heel or toe, the shifter is stuck down. Only after continued prodding of the shifter and engaging the clutch does it pop back up. to me it has the feel of a gunked up linkage but as stated I thought I did a good job of cleaning everything
  16. I have my Garmin 2720 (and Sirius Radio) mounted to my handlebar with short body ram mounts. http://lh3.ggpht.com/_9EMyKcng_yA/SkYU88bxLyI/AAAAAAAACac/fC2YRYO6U9A/s800/P6270652.JPG http://lh4.ggpht.com/_9EMyKcng_yA/SgcFVKKs-hI/AAAAAAAAB8Q/XCe8Xjfx3l0/s800/P5100251.JPG I have since replaced the white home grown bar clamps with Ram mount U clamps, but u get the idea.
  17. I peeled back the boot on all four joints. Sent in some spray graphite grease, twisted the joints and was satisfied that they were operational. HOWEVER, my plan now is to dive in deeper, taking the whole thing apart, apply proper grease and adjust the linkage. Im just hoping this problem doesn't originate in the tranny. thx
  18. Thanks pegscraper. Yep, I greased the troublesome ball joint under hte floorboard. Mine was gunked up badly so I thought I found the problem but even after cleaning and greasing the remaining joints (and the one behind the exhaust pipe is a pain in the $#@@! flb_78: Im certainly not coming to a stop in 3rd. What Im saying is I am rolling to a stop, downshifting through the gears in search of neutral and ultimately 1st. So as Im rolling the shifter gets stuck in the down position, doesn't pop back up which has left me in a gear, other than first, stopped at a light. So while the venture is well built, Im not pleased having to launch from a stop in any gear other than first thanks guys...
  19. I may have thought it was clutch fluid related for all but the main problem of the shifter hanging but maybe. I'll check the fluid anyway. Thanks Any ideas on how to properly adjust the linkage?
  20. Ive read through similar threads and have tried the solution's offered but my problem persists. a. If I downshift, the shifter will occasionally stick, it wont pop back up. b. Although less frequent, I also have a hard time getting it into neutral c. Even less frequently, I have a tough time just shifting through the gears. I am running Amsoil 20/50, Im on 200 miles with MotorKote added. I made sure all the ball joints for the linkage were tight, clean and lubricated. (b) and © I can deal with as eventually I get my way. (a) is a problem. I can roll up to a light in 3rd, drop it to 2nd, shifter hangs. Now Im at a light unable to get moving in 1st. Any ideas?
  21. Well stated. That is exactly how I ride; intersections, tailgaters, trucks; the are aiming for me for sure!
  22. Yup....something about a Midnight.... http://lh6.ggpht.com/_9EMyKcng_yA/SnT6NZu4OdI/AAAAAAAACz0/OpYPckbpTus/s800/P8010599.JPG
  23. OK, I'm in. Amazon, $26.39 free shipping for the 32oz bottle. Hoping I have good results like so many. thx for a great thread!
  24. Doesn't look like a Long Island meet is in the works?
  25. FREAKIN SQUEEEEEaaaaK!!!!!! This squeak came back. I tore the whole trunk apart again. I took the center panel off between the rear speakers and shoved a rag in each side as suggested. Still the squeak persisted. Turns out, one of the support rails from the trunk platform was the culprit. The bolt was tight but I found out also stripped. So it felt tight but wasn't tightening against the frame. Worked that bolt out, replaced and the squeak is gone. aggravating! Thanks for the tips.....
