brake bleeding
similost replied to PRAIRIECOOT's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I use a hand operated brake bleeding tool.. basically a pump you put on the bleed valve, then suck all the fluid and air out with.. be careful and don't drain the reservoir empty though... I will also crack the banjo's at first to get the air out of them before using the tool.. just crack the banjo, then depress the pedel or pull the lever slowly until fluid leaks out, and tighten while still slowly flowing.. Very quick and easy with the right tool... -
This brings up an interesting question for me... I live in a state where no reflector is required on a helmet.. but often ride in a state that has a law for reflectors on the helmet.. I also have no pipe laws here, other than one has to be on the bike, and no noise limit.. THey don't even require it to be the original pipe.. just a pipe.. but other states have laws about that... Or say there is no law for turn signal lights where I live, but there is in a neighboring state... What do you think a cop will do in one of the other states? I'm sure start writing?... however.... I've seen many cops in the other states while riding without reflectors, and with a LOUD pipe... never a problem.... so far..

I get them from a friend here in VA.. I know if you search around on the web for UV leds you can find them too... some sites have purple, but that is not the true UV or black light..
-
So since we can't see the pictures well enough, you going to let us know what it is? Going by color only, I'm leaning towards an owl..
-
Sorry.. can't tell much from these pictures.. can't get a closer cleaner picture? Looks like a log stuck in the tree..

If you ride with lights on, you are best to stay away from red and or blue lights... I've had a few friends that got hassled for riding with those colors.. Other people I know and myself with other colors haven't really had any issues that I know of... I ride with Black light LEDs on and never been stopped, and have ridden past many a cop with them on.

Sinking in asphalt
similost replied to Murphster's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
My Roadstar has the same kickstand the venture does... Every now and then on soft and fresher asphault it would sink in, but not bad. Just a little hard to get the stand out, but it never went so far as to fall over.. I figure the Venture is a little heavier, so I'm imagining it will.. I haven't had my Venture long enough to find out for sure though.. I do know they will sink so far into soft ground you'll be real happy so come back and see it laying on it's side... I won't go into how I know about that.. -
Great tip on the notes and copies.. never done that.. usually just wing it the next time, and always forget something... you add age and CRS, and now I know I'll be making a list! Thanks... OH YEAH.. we'll be taking some firewood too... only we'll be doing brats instead.. so I'll do an extra for you

Well.. this should be interesting... My wife and I are going to take our first trip camping with the motorcycle. Going to load up the trailer and the bags, and take off for about a 4 hour ride. Two nights of camping, along with a float trip down the James River next weekend for the holiday... I'm used to camping, but this should be interesting loading up the trailer for the first time. Never pulled a trailer with a bike before. Have lots of years and miles under my belt, or I wouldn't be attempting it.. I intend to load it up and pull it around for a couple evenings to get the feel of it, and to figure out how to best load our gear into it... This is kind of a small "feeler" trip for a 4 day rally we will be going to in PA... Try and sort out the things we don't know, figure out what we'll be needing that I forgot (it's been a couple years since I've been camping, and need to replace some gear and such) and hopefuly all will go well for the big trip in about 3 weeks... If anyone feels like passing out tips.. I'm all ears..

I use a foot pump.. about 4 presses will put 50 lbs in the rear..

BTW.. I use a pair of Howard's Hog Horns on my Roadie They don't have a rating on them on their site, but I've put them up against all the other airhorns I've seen out there.. other than train horns, they are the loudest I've seen on a bike.. They are all metal, and you can completely disassemble them to clean the diaphragm and air chamber. Great quality chrome on them too. They aren't cheap though, but what's your life worth? I know for a fact they have kept cagers from taking me out. Damn near put a lady into the wall when she started to come into my lane and I laid on the horn and she jerked the wheel back over... I would buy another pair for the venture, but I can't quite figure out where I would mount them... SO.. I'm going with Steible this times around.. thinking a pair should wake a few people up. oh.. here's a sample sound of the Dynamic Duo I have on my Roadie.. http://www.howardshorns.com/dual.wav

Braver than me.. I'd never use any addative in a bike with a wet clutch... how many miles you done in that year and a half? These bikes got a weak enough clutch as it is..
-
All a person needs to do is ride a Ducatti for a few minutes and listen to the chatter of the lifters on them at idle, and you will think these Ventures are the most quiet bike you've ever been on.. For that matter.. you just need to be about a half a block down the street from a Ducatti idling at a light to listen... They actually sound like the clutch in them is about to fly apart.. All bikes have their own sounds they make.. some much worse than others...

What Year To Buy??
similost replied to t-binger's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Stock a Sporty will walk on a 1600 roadie. Not sure about the 1700, but it would be close, but I'm gonna put my money on the sportster... Had a friend I ran a few times on a Sportie... The roadie will take it off the line up to third gear, but then the Sportster will blast past it.. But then I had done a lot of work to the engine on mine... port matched the heads to a Nemesis intake and cleaned up the head ports a little, added a true ram air cleaner and a FAIC pipe, (Forced Air Induction Collector) jetted it, then added a Revmaster. I've yet to find a sportster that will take my Roadie... Not saying they can't be worked on and do it, but a stock one hasn't touch mine yet.. I've run my roadie against a couple of stock 1700 roadies and took all of them by a pretty fair margin.... -
What Year To Buy??
similost replied to t-binger's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
I bought my Roadstar in 03, and have always loved the bike. My wife and I wanted something a little bigger and more comfy for the longer trips, and something that would be a little easier to pull a trailer with. (very few options for a hitch on the roadie, and we didn't want one external to the fender) We looked at wings for a while... Too cramped for me (6') and I didn't like my feet being right under my hips.. Plus, we don't want to be considered Wing Dingers.. SO.. we just walked in this past month and bought an 08 venture off the dealer floor... My wife loves it... we never knew we liked music on the ride.. that was a plus we weren't expecting... She loves all the extra room she has on the back of the venture, not to mention the added trunk that will fit all her "take alongs" I had taken the boards off the Roadie, and went to Legand forwards.. I love them, and the highway bar too, but I've found that floorboards sure do give you a lot more movement and places to put your feet compared to the roadie.. LOTS of room... just not much in choices for where and how to put your highway pegs... I'll tell you though.. after all the time you have spent on the roadie, once you get on the interstate in the Venture, you're gonna feel like the engine is wrapped out... (even though it isn't) Compared to the RPMs that the roadie turns, and what the venture turns at 65 or 70... big difference... still trying to get used to that... You're gonna miss the torque of your roadie too... The venture doesn't have much torque at all.. but once you get the engine wound up.. DAMN does it have some HP... Keep the engine wound up and in the power band, and you'll love the power... I'm very happy with my Venture, but it sure isn't a Roadie.. I'm SO glad that my wife taked me into keeping the roadie and not trading it in... I hope to take the roadie out this weekend... I sure do miss riding it... I love all the personality it has... The Venture just don't seem to be an individual like a Twin can be, but it's still a really great bike! -
Another Cruise Control Problem
similost replied to BJB's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Wouldn't an 05 still be under warranty? I'd let my dealer sort it out if it is under warranty.. much easier than troubleshooting electrical problems yourself. -
I've always found waving to be an interesting point of this hobby, or sport or lifestyle or what ever you want to call it... and I think how you look at riding is how or why people wave... My wife and I were behind a guy and his girl a few weeks ago, and they were in this little bitty old triumph car... It must have been small british car day, because as we were behind them, they passed about 5 or 6 other small british cars going the other way... Interesting.... the all waved at each other... I guess people like to look for that one thing that makes a common bond between them, and acknowledge it... Back when everyone was riding horses, di only the car drivers wave at each other? I mean, you don't see all car drivers waving at each other, so did all horse riders? I doubt it.. it seems to be the ones that do things different and are the minority only wave... Seems for people that their main way of traveling is on motorcycle tend not to wave.. usually BMW people it seems.. at least in this area... they are the ones that seem to ride a bike everywhere, and even in the rain and yes, I've seen snow.. Then you got the weekend HD guys.. they always have to wave with a peace sign, and I've heard people say that's because they ride a V, and they are proud of that.. OK.. what ever.. Then you get the people that damn near break their arms trying to make sure you see them wave.... Ya know... at times, I get tired of worrying if I should wave or not... I just wanna ride, and I may not even notice someone else on a bike... they are just another person on the road like me... Not sure if any of you know who Mordeth is, but this guy is funny... Here's his take on waving... I love his HD to sport bike rider wave... LOL [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqykEhOIaRk]YouTube - BIKER WAVES[/ame]

I'm also going to mention the part about registration. Some states do require it, some don't. Being from out of country could cause problems. Their best bet would be to check the laws in the states they plan on riding through. In my state, it has to be registered, and titled. I had a heck of a time buying a trailer in another state that didn't require a title, then trying to get it titled and registered... Would be a real drag to have something happen, and find out they didn't play by the silly rules they have all over the place here... If it were me, if I was going to another country, I'd try really hard to look for a rental... Even if they did get by with it, it could be a real mess for the person they sell the trailer to for them to get it VIN'd or registered or titled, or what other law they have to deal with, making it harder for them to sell the trailer before they leave.

When I lived in Illinois, I would ride in MO, where they had those vapor sucking pumps.. I made a tool out of steel.. just forked the end of a flat plate.. kind of like a golf shoe spike installer tool... You would pull back the spring sleve, then there was a hump on the nozzle.. just slide the tool over that, and it would hold the sleeve back to fill up normally.

OK.... I'll play... Mine's a real mess... but I use it constantly, and this is the leftovers of about the last 5 big projects... one of which took almost 3 months to get complete... BTW... excuse the crappy pictures.. just clicked real fast...

Remember what our parents said about our bell bottoms????... funny.. when you are young, you didn't understand what adults didn't understand, then once you get older, you can't remember why you don't understand kids today....

You can change out just the rear tire, but if you are getting close on the front too, might as well just do them both at the same time.. It will be like you're riding a completely new bike.

On my Roadstar I do something that supposedly isn't recommened, but many people do it. I run a Metz radial on the rear, and a bias on the front... AMAZING how much it changed the handling. It made the bike feel very light and manuverable at highway speed. I was wondering myself if I could get a radial for the rear of the Venture for when I do need to shop for my first tire for it... Guess I need to start looking around after a get a couple thousand miles on the bike.... IF IT EVER QUITS FREAKIN RAINING!!!
