  1. You could replace the lens with one of these.
  2. I was on the bike and I had to dodge a hide-a-bed couch that fell off a pickup. The civic behind me hit it, spun out and took two other cars with it. Taught me a lesson, I never follow a loaded pick up down the highway. Another time in my truck I ran over an almunim ladder laying in the highway. Pulled over to check damage and the owner of the ladder who was standing on the side of the highway (I-35) trying to retrieve it, wanted me to pay for it! Idiot, always the "other guys" fault.
  3. The family of the seven children are either Mennonite or Amish I know the community is. They have a way to take care of their own. The funeral and burials will be on private property. I believe the community will protect the family from WBC. I really doubt they would ask the guard due to their heritage.
  4. It was great seeing everyone. I left a little late but arrived with the group still outside tire-kicking. Following are some of the pictures I took. Most have been cropped and where taken while riding. The group as I arrived. http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk100/aharbi/ME030811Blanco/P3084142r.jpg http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk100/aharbi/ME030811Blanco/P3084145r.jpg I love this sidecar rig. Tom suggested the LBJ Ranch just a piece up the road. I had an all day pass so I took the back roads home with a quick stop at Luckenbach for a cold ice tea. http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk100/aharbi/ME030811Blanco/P3084198r.jpg Got home at 5:30. All in all a real nice day.
  5. Thanks, I didn't know either.
  6. Have you thought about running Linux? I run Ubuntu (64 bit) and never have a problem. Loads faster, runs faster, shutdowns faster. All my programs are open source (free) I have two Windoze programs that I need and run them in a Wine session. Just a thought. I have run all the Linux "flavors" over the years but have settled with Ubuntu being the most user friendly, most compatible with my HW, yet I can drop to the shell and get down/dirty when I have to. It has taken some time for me to ween off Windoze programs and find a suitable Linux replacements. But I've done it. I have friends/family that call me in a panic when Windoze crashes and they fear they have lost all their pictures/documents/files/etc. I boot their machine from a Linux flash drive, copy all their files onto external media, leave them a "live" Linux CD so they can at least run their computer till they can get Windoze fixed. I don't mess with Windoze anymore, ain't got the time nor inclination to spend countless hours were I could be out riding. Just sayin...
  7. Family genealogy, digital photo/document restoration. Fishing, grandkids.
  8. Be careful of wet and shady areas especially if in the snow line, they may be icey. I would obey the speed limit signs on curves, I have found them to be very accurate. Try not to stop on the steep grades and watch how you park on the same as you have a good possability of 1) not getting the bike back off the kickstand and/or 2) the bike falling over 3) park the bike IN gear on a grade facing UP HILL. Leave plenty of room between vehicles, Leave plenty of room between vehicles. Leave plenty of room between vehicles. Enjoy the ride. http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk100/aharbi/Montana%201%202009/P8081893.jpg
  9. I have two of their windshields, one on my Vstrom and one on my V-Star. Fit & finnish is excellent. I've had them for several years with no problems. I have never seen one nor do they have pictures of their windshield for the Venture. I'm leaning toward a Clearview for my Venture only because I've seen them on other Ventures and I know what I'm getting. Till I see one on a Venture I'm a bit reserved.
  10. Motorcycle friendly GPS. Comparing Nuvi 500/550 to Zumo 665 If you shop around you can find a new Nuvi 500 for $200. No bells whistles like the Zumo 665 but will do all the GPS, routes, tracks, etc. Can also be used on your boat, hiking, car etc.
  11. I too mount first, engine off (already warmed up before hand), kickstand down. I lay my tummy across the gas tank holding the bars with the front brake on to make more room. My wife is shall I say well nourished. She olds the backrest with her left hand, places her left foot on the left foot rest, leans to the center of the bike. Stands up, swings her right leg over her seat and sits down. I sit up, start the bike, put up the stand and away we go.
  12. Pictures! pictures, close ups, lots & lots of pictures. With the macro settings on the digital cameras bet you can see the "old crack" vs the new fracture in what broke.
  13. Thanks for sharing. Rode it in summer of 2009. Brought back nice memories.
  14. Or the town got greedy. The only thing they had going for them was the name. Wonder what the merchants had to say. I'm sure the townspeople complained about the rally. Guess they don't realize how easy it is for us to "pack up" and move on down the road, spend our money someplace else. Guess they think we are all RUBs.
  15. This is what I did. Note discussion was only a month or two ago. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?p=531838#post531838
  16. Just replaced mine this fall with a Yuasa YTX20HL-BS $89 from www.tristatebattery.com OEM lasted 7 years. I use battery tender religiously, bike is garage kept.
  17. Dave, you may have the receipts needed. Hopfully you used your cc to charge all your purchases at Wallmart. They will have a record of your purchases and what was purchased. The id numbers (bar code) will identify the item purchased. At that point I would think it would be up to them to prove you did not use the purchased item on your bike. Anyway, I would not provide them any evidence to use against you untill you hire legal councel. 1) GET A LAYWER! 2) get your bike back. You are playing hard ball now. They will charge you storage AND will not release it to you till you pay the $600 diagnostic labor. Get a copy of what they found in writing. ie. what the $600 paid for 3) contact regional Yamaha (go over the stealer head) that the dealer left you no choice but to file legal action. 4) post your ordeal on every motorcycle - yamaha related forum. Turn up the public pressure. 5) buy a Honda to ride till this is settled a few years from now. Cause I know you won't be riding a Yamaha in the near future. Good luck buddy
  18. Using the heel/toe shifter depends on what type oil I'm running with what brand of tires set at a specific pressure and if I'm using green or orange antifreeze.
  19. Yes, I would never of smoked. Even though I quite 6 years ago.
  20. I have no plans to replace the Venture. I hope it will last to the end of my riding days. I do have plans for adding a Concours 14ABS to the stable real soon.
  21. No. But just about everything else does. I'd plan it around a major maintenance schedule. May as well do a coolant change, replace the fuel filter, lube all the rear suspension, rear end oil change, rear brake shoes swop/replace/fluid flush. You will either have these parts off or have easier than normal access to them. My bearings were fine at a little over (if I remember correctly) 23k. Cleaned, regreased anyway. My thinking is if they looked fine at 23k I can extend the next time to at least another 23k or about once a year to 18 months with the riding I do. Also, I do not pressure wash the bike, very seldom rode in the rain (just lucky) so there was no external force to washaway the existing grease. I used the Honda Moly 60 paste from the Honda CAR dealership. A motorcycle shop either won't, can't, get it, have it or charge way too much for it. I won't lie, it wasn't an easy job for me and I had the bike on the stand of a month till I got it back together thanks in part to the folks on this site. In fact it's been almost a year to the day.
  22. I have used the Break In Secrets on my last two bikes. Have about 30k on both of them now with NO problems. Remember the back-pressure (engine breaking) is as important as the acceleration. I used dino oil both times (what was in the bike). I changed the oil twice, once at 100 miles again at 500ish and then went to synthetic oil which I have been running ever since. My break-ins took two days. ps. don't tell the dealer you did it this way.
  23. I like the washing instructions on my riding gear. You know the ones with armor and made of ballistic this and kevlar that. The gear that is suppose to save your hide should you take a tumble from the bike. Hand wash only with mild soap Do not machine wash Max temperature 40'c Do not soak Gently squeeze and if necessary carefully rub Rinse with care Do not ring or line dry Do not iron Do not dry clean Do not bleach
  24. Look at the Nuvi 500 or 550
  25. I'm more concerned with engine wear than performance. I had K&Ns but replaced them with the OEM. After reading a number of articles about ISO 5011. It would appear that although K&N does breath better it also allows more dirt to be sucked into the engine. Best flowing and best filtering is really a contradictory statement. The K&N site does have a contra argument to the ISO 5011 testing, but being involved with the ISO testing folks for a number of years in my job I tend to lean more toward their findings. Bottom line, K&N was next to last for letting in the most dirt, or in other words was second best at letting in the most dirt. But the best in letting in the most air. Having ridden my bike both ways I find negligible difference in performance. Just saying...
