My "riding" camera is an older (3 years) Olympus Stylus 1030W. The newer versions are Tough Series (TG-3XX to TG-8XX) they are waterproof, freezeproof, shockproof and will take 1080p video. I wear it around my neck on a 35mm type camera strap. I always wear it when I ride. It is flat so I can slip it into the front of my riding jacket. The camera strap is great for no-fear of dropping the camera and long enough to move the camera around to take shots while I ride and if I have to grab the bars in a hurry. I'm very pleased with it. I can operate it with just my left hand. I have used it in the rain and while swimming. It has a great auto-panorama feature that will take the next shot by just moving the camera to the side. I keep an extra battery and memory card for longer trips. When my wife rides along she users her 16MP Lumix DMC-G3 from the back seat.

Report of a motorcycle death on the Dragon
aharbi replied to midnightrider1300's topic in Watering Hole
I was in my PU but I had to swerve around a sofabed in the center lane of I-35 in downtown Austin TX. At night I wouldn't of had time and would of hit it. Glad I wasn't on the bike. -

Favorite tire! Are you kidding me! I don't have a favorite tire, I hate them all. No matter which one I'm running someone has had it crack, split, loose air, throw chunks, go flat and only get 4,000 miles. While the one they are presently running will last 50,000 miles grips in the rain like a puckered butt and runs as smooth as glass at 118mph. Just sayin...

Motorcycle Etiquette: How Not To Wave Like A Dork!
aharbi replied to SilvrT's topic in Watering Hole
How about the head nod. I use it often when my hands are busy or I see a cage driver wave his hand from the steering wheel and don't have time to wave my hand. Heck here in Texas (not counting Dallas/FW, Houston, San Antonio) we wave at everybody, you don't have to be on a bike. I've had farmers wave from their tractors off in a field at me. -
This is how I dress for the Texas 100°F riding. Cotton boxer shorts. Light cotton pants (not blue jeans) with mesh riding pants. Wickaway T-shirt, long sleeve RideCool evaporative vest. Mesh jacket. HJC Carbon helmet with Silks satin liner. I couldn't ride all summer they way I do in the Texas heat without a cool-vest. I have the one with zippered sleeves. I ordered it from http://ridecool.com/deluxe.htm it is a TechNiche's Evaporative Cooling Vest. I'm very pleased with them (I have several, spare, clean, dirty) With a rare exception it will last all day 6-8hrs (11am - 5pm). I lightly ring it out (not sopping wet) put it on over a t-shirt and wear a mesh riding jacket over the vest. Yes, the t-shirt gets wet when I first put it on, but you don't notice it after a couple of miles (better than wet with sweat). I find the sleeves are a big help. Wearing it for me means the difference of riding or not in the Texas summer. I also keep several frozen water bottles in the freezer for ready use to ride. Always have cold water as they thaw. I keep them in a soft insulated cooler bag. I keep a wash cloth wrapped around one of the bottles, always damp and cool for a refreshing wash of my face.

wet it - Tide - power wash rinse - repeat once a year.

Look at the nuvi 500 or 550 $299. Both are waterproof and will do routes at $100 less than the least expensive zumo model. Garmin doesn't list it as one of their motorcycle GPS because they want you to buy a Zumo

I've never had a problem getting a test ride. In fact I never have asked but they always offer. Never had to put down my CC either. Wonder if they see me ride up on the Venture and don't ask.

You should be able to pull it out by hand. Hold the pumpkin with your feet and pull. There is a seal on the shaft in the pumpkin housing, you can see it. May have to wiggle it a bit. Do not use a large screw driver to tap the seal or you'll tear it.

fix for broken windshield bracket tabs
aharbi replied to 54chevybelair's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I ordered a Clearview windshield. When I went to install it I found what many on this forum had found - broken windshield bracket plastic tabs. I hit this forum for a fix and found several. I opted for the one posted by 54chevybelair on 12/18/2011. I used a larger wire tie. It feels quite strong - stronger than the original but time will only tell if it will last as long as the steel strap fix. Right side (as sitting on the bike) http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk100/aharbi/Motorcycle/IMG_1240.jpg Left side (as sitting on the bike) http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk100/aharbi/Motorcycle/IMG_1243.jpg I also noticed signs of stress on the fairing windshield mounting holes from what appears tobe over torque by the PO. http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk100/aharbi/Motorcycle/IMG_1245.jpg not as fancy nor as pretty as the brass stock used by Cardon_One. I used fender washers to spread the load. http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk100/aharbi/Motorcycle/IMG_1248.jpg I like the Clearview shield as they use mounting holes not slots with great little black bolt inserts. http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk100/aharbi/Motorcycle/IMG_1250.jpg DONE with the windshield pouch mounted. The bell is yours, given to you not the bike, to be placed on your bike. You keep it if trading/selling the bike - to be placed on "your bike" the one you are riding. It is meaningless to a new owner/rider. It is a personal thing given to you by a friend not to be traded in nor sold.

Bet it goes faster than you'd think. Enjoy each day with them!

Best seat for a RSTD
aharbi replied to Steve-O's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Seats are a personal thing. Ask 100 different butts and get 100 different answers. Get a custom seat maker that will work (rework) with you till it's right for your butt. I like Russell Daylongs myself.- 15 replies

Perhaps the carbs need sync'd. This can cause it to run a bit ruff. It's a V-4 so should run pretty smooth but prolly not a smooth as a wing. A tach? why? the bike has a rev limiter. Unless you just like looking at a tach you don't NEED one. read page 4-6 http://www.starmotorcycles.com/assets/service/manuals/2008/LIT-11626-21-42_Royal_Star_Venture_1464.pdf

50mph Crosswinds. How do you ride? fast? slow? not at all
aharbi replied to deepforkriver's topic in Watering Hole
I ride for my enjoyment. I don't enjoy riding on windy days, say anything over 25mph. So if it's windy I don't ride. Now if on a trip and I have to ride in the wind I use my ear plugs and tuck-in while I ride. Wind from the back is not noticed and actually fun but from the front or sides not so much. But as stated I prefer a heavy bike in the wind. -
We rode that area last spring, stayed in Harrison. Some of the best riding I've ever done. Check out the roads around Jasper. Be careful on the switchbacks on AR Hwy 123 some of the tightest I've ridden. The whole rewards program(s) is kinda funny when you think about it. They give you extra points/rewards to make it less expensive/easier/nicer so you can stay away from home more often. Before I retired I was in the air 4-5 days a week. I caught planes like most folks caught buses. I was a million miler on several airlines and retired holding 860,000 frequent flyer points. And was a gold, silver or platinum member of just about every hotel chain. I just gave away remaining points to Make a Wish, Fisher House Foundation and Starlight Foundation before they expired. Naw, don't miss it. I like traveling on two wheels now staying in Mom Pop Motels on the back roads that I use to look down on from 30,000 feet.
