  1. I am planning on rebuilding my front calipers as I suspect one of my brakes might be dragging. I pulled the calipers out and upon inspection the pistons were as smooth as can be except for the small section that sticks out of the caliper while in the normal position. Running my finger across them I can feel that they are a little rough. Some of it is just dirt and some might be actual damage to the piston itself. My question is: How much pitting is okay in the caliper piston before it ought to be replaced? It appears that any roughness in the piston itself remains outside the caliper when a set of fresh pads are installed therefore I would presume that it is fine to go ahead and not replace these and just polish them as much as possible before reinstalling in the rebuilt caliper. I have included a few pictures of what I am looking at here - I know it is a little hard to tell, but it was pretty much the best I could do. Also, is there anything else I ought to be checking for on these? I did notice more dirt build up on one of the caliper's pistons than the other, which leads me to believe that something is wrong with that particular caliper (ie leaky seal or something like that). Thanks for putting up with my dumb questions...
  2. One last question on this stuff. I obviously need the bearings and oil seal. On the fiche I am seeing the part labeled as "collar" (#9. P/N: 90387-22016-00) on the fiche for 2001 RSV found at http://www.partshark.com/fiche_section_detail.asp?section=39099&category=Motorcycles&make=YAMAHA&year=2001&fveh=1032 Do I need to replace this collar as well? Thanks all
  3. What a load of... "Go buy it yourself"... sheesh.
  4. Glad that your friend is okay. Hopefully he'll stay that way and won't find any soreness/bruises etc from this as time goes on.
  5. Yikes. I'd definitely shop around. Check with whoever you have your homeowner's (or renters) insurance with as well as your automotive insurance. Sometimes you can get a multiple policy discount. I am currently with progressive, no citations, violations, crashes, claims etc. but still considered a "high-risk driver" due to my age and am paying half of what that is for 2 motorcycles. (Full coverage on my RSV). I realize that a newer vehicle is worth more and whatnot, but wow. That is intense. Shop around and hopefully you'll find something good. (By the way, I know Texas is not Indiana, but I have insured vehicles when I lived in Michigan and Illinois, and for bikes, I have never paid close to that). Good luck friend.
  6. Glad things are going well!! I hope that everything continues to go as well and quickly as possible!
  7. Okay. I was pretty sure about it, but before I started pulling my own out and whatnot - I just wanted to double check. Thanks.
  8. I know, dumb question, but is what I have outlined, what everyone has been calling the 'pumpkin'? I've always referred to this particular piece as the rear axle gear assembly... But, 'pumpkin' is certainly thrown around quite a bit... Thanks. Like someone had said, I do ride a 2nd gen so I guess that makes me kind of slow with some things... I'm okay with that.
  9. If it turns out it will not be a simple 'plug and play' type setup, it probably would not be all that difficult to put in a switch somewhere and a relay that taps into the existing turn signal circuit to activate the four way flashers. In reality, that method may be cheaper as well.
  10. On the 2001 RSV US model we have: Left side (where driver's left hand would go): - Headlamp High/Low toggle (No off option) - Turn signals (blinkers) (Left/right, push in for off) - Horn Right side (where driver's right hand would go): - Engine shut off switch (Red one) - Cruise control toggle (Up for resume/accelerate; down for set/decelerate) - Cruise control cancel - Hazard on/off toggle (causes both, left and right, turn signals to flash simultaneously on both front and back of the bike) -- this is the toggle switch that is to the left of the cruise and unlabeled. It has 2 positions, up and down. - Starter button Another thought is that I believe there may be an extra relay for the flashers, so you may want/need to check for that as well. Hope this is what you were looking for.
  11. I guess I'll keep my mouth shut then. Congrats on the weight by the way!
  12. I think that over-tightening the screws/bolts that hold the windshield in place has a lot to do with it too. (As well as the big windscreen blowing in the wind)
  13. Well shucks; Looks like I ought to be in for one of these too. While the hammer and screwdriver work, I sure do prefer to do it right...
  14. Hmmm... What about browser toolbars, plug-ins, add-ons etc? Do you have any of those in common on your work machine and home machine?
  15. Shift Lever One thing to do (to keep organized and make sure you don't miss some that the dealer would have put on would be to go through the assmebly instructions and check everything that the dealer would/should have touched... Or just start at the front (or wherever) and work your way all the way around the bike...
  16. Looks like some great scenery out there! Glad you guys had a good ride
  17. Quite frankly, I don't see an issue with it either way. It seems like a lot of work to go through and pick apart a whole thread post by post, deciding which ones ought to come out and which ones ought to stay, etc. Unless it is very clearly one or two that are way out of line or something... I can certainly see pros and cons to both methods. But whatever you guys want to do; I'll just try to stay out of trouble
  18. I was wondering how ya'll were doing up there... They weather people are telling us that we will only get 8 here in Lubbock. wohoo. I too thought I left this crap in the midwest. It was a good time trying to get in my truck this morning. It was like a big popsicle. It was funny at first. Then I realized it was BOTH of the doors were frozen shut, (door handles, locks, and all the way around the edges too). Although we were getting some thunder & lightning earlier too. That was cool. The only time I've ever gotten snowed/sleeted on and thunder/lighting in the same storm was during a tornado or two a few years ago.
  19. EDIT: Sorry, I did not read this very carefully earlier and had missed some pertinent info... end edit ---------------------- https://ask.census.gov/cgi-bin/askcensus.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=781&p_created=1103807925&p_sid=VnXw98Tj&p_accessibility=0&p_redirect=&p_srch=&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPSZwX3NvcnRfYnk9JnBfZ3JpZHNvcnQ9JnBfcm93X2NudD0xMjc3LDEyNzcmcF9wcm9kcz0mcF9jYXRzPSZwX3B2PSZwX2N2PSZwX3NlYXJjaF90eXBlPWFuc3dlcnMuc2VhcmNoX25sJnBfcGFnZT0x&p_li=&p_topview=1 Here is some more information on it. I don't see anything regarding a fine for not filling it out (I did just skim over it very quickly though, so I could have easily missed it) but I DO see that they claim that you are required by law to fill it out 'completely and to the best of your ability'. Lucky you.
  20. Weird... Well, I've got a bunch more words about this but I should probably keep them to myself...
  21. This is simply 100% false. My mom happens to be a real estate agent and for the last couple years she has been doing appraisals under the main appraiser that her office uses (times are a little slow for her so she decided to pick up some extra cash by helping him out for a while). Property values are decided based primarily on market conditions for that particular area. Also on, of course, condition of the house, land, etc etc. But no. They do not ever refer to the census to determine the value of a home. Local cities or counties do have government appraisers that come around once a year (well, are supposed to) to appraise your property to know how much 'rent' (property tax) you need to pay for your little chunk of land. But again, this has NOTHING to do with the census people.
  22. I will reserve all other comments except for this one. Beware of the possibility of it being a scam. The census bureaus typically send those things out in mass to chunks of zip codes at a time. Your friend can call the local census bureau and determine if it IS, in fact, a real one or not. It sounds like if one were to answer all of that kind of information it would be quite easy to 'walk off' with someone elses' identity. In other words, sounds a little bit like a scam to me... Just a thought. It is ALWAYS wise to check the validity of anything before putting down personal information.
