rear shock leak?????
LilBeaver replied to Red Rider's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Quite a bit. The book says that the front holds 18.7 fl. Oz., and while it does not (or I didn't find it at least) indicate how much the rear holds, I would estimate (based on what I found on my garage floor) somewhere between 10 and 20 fl. oz. some folks seem to have indicated that their shock let loose of the oil all at once, but mine seemed to leak out continuously for several days. -
different type of poll type question (maybe)

http://www.camelbak.com/sports-recreation/hydration-packs/2010-mule.aspx This is what I use - got it for about 50 bucks (including shipping) from some place... I'll have to check to see where I got it from. But I fill the bladder up about 1/2 way and lay it flat in the freezer the night before I go for a ride. Next day, fill it up the rest of the way with water and I've got cold water on demand for most of the day. Been using these for several years and love it. -
rear shock leak?????
LilBeaver replied to Red Rider's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I'm guessing that you'll have some that will say to not touch your bike until you get a new one on, and some say that you could ride it forever. However, I rode mine for about 2 months (after it started leaking) before replacing the shock. Handling was affected some and the ride quality also declined, but, it is my main source of transportation so I rode it anyways. There was a member that posted I think within maybe the last week that he had triked his bike and only had about 275 miles on his rear shock - you might could work out a deal with him so you aren't paying hte 450+ for an OEM one, or the 700 for the works. My suggestion would be to, first of all, make sure you clean the oil up the best you can (to make sure that you don't get any on that rear tire), put some air in the shock (if you don't have any in there) then take it out for a test ride - take it easy on the leans and see how it feels. If you are comfortable driving it, then enjoy - if not, then park it. I felt the most unstable during really hard cornering, the rear end would be rather unpredictable if I was leaned way over, but other than that, I still managed to ride okay. Oh yea, and replacing the shock itself is a piece of cake and there is plenty of information on this site to help you out with it, so, don't pay some shop lots of money to do it for you! -
PM Sent regarding order for RSV.
-
Haha - yea right. Check away!! While they are in there it would be nice if they could contribute and do some work for me Now that is interesting. I guess not all that surprising, but interesting. I may inquire a little more when things settle down for the IT guy. - mostly for my curiosity. You must have an awfully large back yard!!! Or very understanding neighbors

Hey, while you are in there, why don't you fit some data for me!!
-
From what the works guy was telling me the shocks are actually built to order and they only get a handful of RSV shock orders per year.
-
See that is the thing, there are only a few people in the world that would know what any of my work means. This is because of the nature of my experiments (I am a Physicist), since we set them up, in order to accurately analyze the data, one must know how everything was setup initially, so even if they did take, it they wouldn't know what to do with it. I suspect it was not a targeted attack, but who knows. And I agree, there are some immensely smart and capable people out there - I'm sure they could accomplish all sorts of good stuff.

I like the bike & moped at 0:15...

I too was referring tot he progressive site. Sorry about the confusion. And, I completely agree - their website is not very user friendly. The first two 'customer service' reps I talked to were not very friendly either. The 3rd one though, man, it was like a completely different company - I hope he got credit for my order... And yes, 6-700 bucks for a shock I think is a total rip... but, what other choice do we have other than dump the bike and go with a different kind (or keep riding on the busted shock... which I did for a while) - and all bikes have their own little quirks, so oh well.

Works is actually a bit more. My total rang in at around 700 (including S&H to texas -- 689 before S&H, they are California based so Ca. folks will have to do the sales tax thing), opposed to the cheapest I found the stock one for ~480 after tax & shipping (as appropriate). The works one, however, is built to order, guaranteed for 1 full year and can be rebuilt for less than 100 bucks after that. And by the way condor - despite the info presented on the [progressive] website, works is still making them for the RSV, I just put one on my bike. There is another company (i'll have to look through to see if I can find the quote) that has made a few, but they wanted ~$500 and the guy I talked to said he needed dimensions, etc etc - so I decided that I didn't want to mess with that. If you are interested, I can dig out the contact information for you. -- Although, you may be fine for a while. Some have had theirs replaced once and never had a problem since. Others have had multiple failures so,

Anyone running an MT90HB-16 Front... Elite 3?
LilBeaver replied to Dave77459's topic in Watering Hole
I too have ridden across that bridge several times (I lived in Marquette for a few years) and while most of the time I DO agree with you, it is really not that big of a deal, I have had a few crossings that were somewhat less than desirable (granted this was on my goldwing NOT the RSV). One time was on a brand spanking new Dunlop E2 and it felt like it really 'grabbed' the grate - this tire literally had about 200 miles on it when crossing the bridge (I had it put on right before I left for that trip, I know it is bad practice to mount up a tire then take a trip, but whatever). And there have been a few times where I crossed in the rain with some wind - the wind can really rip across the straights and when that grate gets wet, it is SLICK. But, of the scares that I had, I never once felt like I was going to lose control of the bike or whatever, so, as long as you take it easy and are prepared for the fact that it isn't going to be 'just like your standard smooth highway road' then you'll be fine. By the way, when you get ready to go up there - depending on how rigid your schedule is, let me know I can give you a few decent roads to take in the U.P that are definitely worth while. -
No, he just needs to stick to one at a time!

First and foremost: :fiddle: Secondly, the way I read this is YOU did this to your self. Now, if you want to keep yourself busy during the day, why don't you come down to the lab here and see if you can figure out how someone got into my account

Apparently some folks have quite a bit of time on their hands. I got an e-mail from the IT guy that runs/maintains one of the servers that I do most of my work on. Apparently 5 of our account passwords have been compromised (that is 5 people with accounts on this system), some files have been accessed and there is some stuff missing. So, apparently my 16 character password that is case sensitive including symbols, numbers, lower case and uppercase letters (and nothing that even resembles a real English word, phone number, address, etc) wasn't quite good enough - or someone just really wanted to get in. Now with that said, I'm pretty sure the joke is on them because most of the stuff in that account is either incomplete data analysis (since this particular experiment is still ongoing) and the rest is stuff that is completed and I either already have it published or it is in the process of being published - so they really have nothing to gain from accessing my junk. Anyways - I'm glad I keep my stuff backed up, so I can restore everything and not think twice about what may have been monkeyed with, but regardless it is still a little bit irritating and confusing. I just don't get some people Okay, I'll shut up and get back to work

Just out of curiosity (I KNOW and fully understand you are busy and that you are doing this on the side), do you still have a big list of members that are waiting for you to have the time to make them or has that dwindled/gotten lost? Just sort of wondering if I got passed up or if you just haven't had time...
-
Another one of my letters got published in the newspaper...

I am waiting too. -
I see that you indicate that you have both the grease and the cleaner, which is good, so I presume that you probably already know this but I am going to say it anyways just to make sure it is clear to everyone that my not know. Dielectric grease is good for what it's intended purpose is BUT it is NOT the same thing as electrical contact cleaner. The contact cleaner is a solution that helps clean the contacts, as the name would suggest. The dielectric grease is an insulating compound that helps prevent moisture from collecting (and then corroding) the contacts.

Hi all. Ya'll really do crack me up. I had no idea this would end up with such a following. I am still out of the country, working, so I don't have a whole lot of time to post, but I figured I'd at least pop on and let everyone know what is going on. Maybe even a 'preview' for the upcoming ride . I have a list of preventative maintenance type items to work on while I am home before I go out, some include minor rewiring, changing out the rear tire, lubing the drive shaft, hub pins, etc. BUT, if all goes according to plan and I am back when i am supposed to get back (evening of the 23rd), all of that will be done by the evening of the 24th, and our plan is to hit the road early morning of the 26th for sure (maybe even the 25th too, but it depends on if I can get everything done around the house and on the bike, that I need to since I'll be gone for about 5 weeks, beginning the 28th with a ride up to Nelson, BC). The destination has not been set yet, but I think that I'll aim for the northern part of NM again and then see where we end up, since that was a pretty decent ride. Last I talked with her, she was pumped about our next ride, so - again, we'll see how it goes. I am not sure when her MSF class is scheduled for but she did say that it is going to be a few months before she has enough cash to go get her own bike, so in the meantime, we'll just have to ride 2-up. Aw, shucks. Alright, I do need to get back to work and while this wasn't much of a preview or 'season summary', it'll have to do for now. The weather here has been quite nice and I am having some major bike withdraws. Alright, if I get some more time I may post a little more, but hopefully this will help satisfy some of ya'll's 'needs' Considering my phone doesn't do text messages, not to mention I am out of the country and refuse to pay the international charges I guess I can't forward anything I know, what kind of young punk am I? I don't ride a sport bike AND I don't text message, sheesh. :yikes: :yikes: :yikes: :yikes: :yikes: :yikes: :yikes: :yikes: :yikes: :yikes: :yikes: :yikes: :yikes: :yikes: :yikes: :yikes: :yikes: :yikes: Well Lowell, I'm not going to worry about it too much since we are just friends and she seems to really enjoy riding. It isn't like some others I've been around that tell me that they enjoy riding but either never want to come with me or come and start complaining within the first short leg of the ride... Whatever happens happens and I'll deal with it when it does
-
Howdy. I was pretty sure I had posted a rather complete review of how I felt about it... Apparently I didn't - sorry about that. I know I certainly don't like when threads are left unresolved. I'll look around and see if maybe I wrote it up somewhere and didn't post it, or posted it somewhere else. Sorry that I didn't get back to you, I am currently out of the country at one of the accelerators I use for my research (thusly, my phone is off). This is the first time i've been on this site in a while too, I have been extreemly busy and simply have not had time to get on, read and post. More in a little bit.

Something else to check would be the electrical connections. Seems like a good time to pull them apart and spray some QD electrical cleaner in there, etc. Of course check all of your bolts and nuts for appropriate tightness, etc.
-
That stinks man, hopefully they get one in in time for you. I hope you aren't going through Watt's in Lubbock...
-
Now that is an interesting idea.
