starting problem
LilBeaver replied to texasrices's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
I don't know what the failure rate is for the ignition switches on the RSTC's, but as george mentioned, it seems to be a common problem with the 2nd gens. Some have had good luck by disassembling the existing switch, cleaning it and repairing the burnt connectors. HOWEVER, on what you described: I would have to look at a wiring diagram for your particular bike, but since the lights come ON with the key, if your ignition switch was the culprit it doesn't seem likely that your lights would still be on when the bike shut off. If you can crank but not start, again - likely NOT the ignition switch; since if there is a break in the continuity inside the switch you loose the power to the bike all together. Could it still be a loose connection somewhere in there - sure it is possible. But, it sounds to me like you need to be checking a few other items as well (fuel pump, grounds, fuse box - for corrosion, etc.) With respect to your question about getting the switch off without removing the radiator, I don't know for your bike... Hopefully you can identify the problem quickly. -
Where to buy shock?
LilBeaver replied to kartattack's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I have messed with it a little bit but still haven't found something I am real happy with (EXCEPT for when the bike isn't fully loaded - then, and only then, does it ride like I think it should). There were some other issues that I had with it; the ride quality was one of a few reasons as to why I called them. I just hope you have and will have better customer service than I did (which I can't imagine will be much of a stretch), a shock that actually fits when you [finally] receive it, you receive it within the 2-6 week time frame they give you and that you are satisfied with the ride once you do get it on. Don't get me wrong, it seems that most of the posts that I have read about these shocks have been very positive; I guess if there was an alternative choice, and I had to replace one in the future, this company would not be my first choice. -
Very cool. I guess that is a reason to ride to Plainview... By the way that video quality was impressive; are you sure that video camera makes phone calls too?

- 30 day 'performance guarantee' -- meaning if you are not happy with the ride they will rebuild it; customer pays shipping to them for this service (I called about mine because I felt it was a bit too stiff and the guy I talked to said that there was nothing they could do for me... so who knows) - 1 year 'parts and workmanship' -- Meaning if it fails they will rebuild it/replace it for only the cost of shipping to them. -
Wow. Sadly, I've known some that could double as the 'real life' version of this... lol, nice.

INCONCEIVABLE!

This is why I am quite thankful that these boards are not fixed like they are on some bikes... If they were fixed, we wouldn't have that 'buffer zone' and 'audible alert system'.

Were is the best to buy a new tire?
LilBeaver replied to waterbug's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
If you are really concerned about getting an old tire (which I usually am too) your best bet is to go to a dealer (with a reasonable price on the tire) and INSPECT the tire BEFORE purchasing it. If you don't like what you see, ask for a different one. For one of my bikes, my local dealer was slightly annoyed but still did it for me, when I requested that they get a tire with a more recent date code on it. They asked that I pay for it ahead of time since they were going to be placing the order and on the signed copy of the reciept, I signed and agreed to accept the tire if the date code was within 1 year (or so) of that day's date. I signed it and had the parts manager initial it to show that we all agreed to it. It took two tries with the tire supplier to get it, but the dealership held up their end of the deal. (As it turns out, they didn't end up charging my CC until after they received the tire that I would accept; but I think for them it was a book-keeping issue). Anyhoo, I don't know if you'll have the same experience with one by you or not. -
It depends on how your e-mail is setup. For example is it through an Exchange server, POP3 account, etc? The first place I would look is the 'deleted items' folder within outlook.

Where to buy shock?
LilBeaver replied to kartattack's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
For the 'works performance' shock, their e-bay store is just like ordering it through them. Your best bet is to call it in, just to make sure it gets done CORRECTLY the first time. Then be prepared to wait. It took me over 2 months to get mine, despite their '2-6 week' advertised wait time... Yes, it is expensive - but so is replacing the OEM shock with another OEM shock MORE THAN ONE TIME. If you'd like to go with an OEM shock, part shark has them for 430.38 +S/H. http://www.partshark.com/fiche_section_detail.asp?section=1345192&category=Motorcycles&make=YAMAHA&year=2010&fveh=37804 But again, think about it: 2 OEM shocks = 860+... Don't hesitate to do some searching on our very own VR site; you can find all sorts of good info on this topic too. -
The problem has likely been isolated (the plug thing) so I won't repeat that. BUT, it is absolutely critical that you don't start the bike with the fins off - I figured that was worth repeating, JUST to make sure!! It is an easy fix. While you are at it you may as well replace the 4 of those plugs and the coolant too.

What!? I thought you were one of those AGATT people Kidding aside, I do hope you are okay.

Rear shock leaking
LilBeaver replied to terrysears's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
1 SHOCK ABSORBER ASSY, 4XY-22210-10-00 Retail: $609.52 'Our price' $430.85 From: http://www.partshark.com/fiche_section_detail.asp?section=1345192&category=Motorcycles&make=YAMAHA&year=2010&fveh=37804 [Part shark as of 23:28 27/Sept/10 Central Time] Granted this is in USD, but at the CURRENT exchange rate that puts end price at ~441 + S/H Remember that ANY year rear shock 99-2010 will work. The pre 04 style IS significantly more expensive. -
Remember that the GPS only tracks your mileage (kilometer-age, lol)for when you have a signal [in addition to the unit being on]. Therefore, it is perfectly reasonable to expect the GPS to read less than the vehicle you are driving (in addition to the 1-2% offset the bike already has). Hope you had a good trip!!

If I had the time, I sure would. Lots of good riding up there ESPECIALLY this time of year... Of course, I don't need to tell you that now do I... PM Returned. Thanks - Enjoy!

Glad you had a good trip! I had the same feelings when I rode through those areas too - Too much to see and too little time!! I sure am hoping I can make it up there for our 2011 get together!! Oh yea. AHEM. I don't see any pictures from your alleged trip - so it must not have happened. :stickpoke:

Before I trashed my Cleirview shield (since it snapped off) I pulled the vent out of it. I bought the shield from a fellow member here who bought the shield from clierview with the vent installed. The vent works fine (the ball bearing could use a cleaning and lubrication I'm sure) but all the pieces are there. I was going to hang onto this vent and install it in another shield but I think I'm going to give the round pop-vents a try and figure I can pass this along to another member that wants it. I'm asking $30 (USD) And that is shipped to you (in the US). If anyone in the Vancouver BC area wants it, I can deliver it to you for no charge sometime between 6-21/Oct/10. I have attached some pictures. I can take PayPal, Personal check or cash (if we meet in person).

Good comments. For what it is worth two of the guys I work with live in Moscow [born and raised there] and w have talked a few times about the 'suicides' (what they call the folks on sport bikes that do this stuff). the speak broken English, so their translation maybe off a little, but point being, they described this guy's behavior to a tee and said they see it all over. They asked me if I ride "in between the lanes" or "between the going and coming traffic". My answer, of course, was no but like I have already said - they said there are many many people that ride like this there. I counted 3 instances in this video where this guy almost bit it - all involved vehicles changing lanes - but I do agree he shows excellent control over his bike.
