  1. Understood and agreed. I am a 'college kid' though, and I still don't understand not taking care of your stuff. I suppose one of the differences, as pointed out, is the 'given to' instead of earned/purchased by one's own means. But that is a different deabate/discussion for a different time. If I am not mistaken, almost all of the computers I have dealt with over the years and even quite a few electronic devices are all equipped with these types of safeguards. BUT, apparently something went wrong in this case. Definite score for your iPad not getting warm in operation. With the way I have to push the computers I use for my research, I do not think I could actually find one that did not get warm. lol. ANYWAYS, Back on topic....
  2. Holy smokes, only 15 months?!?!? Lets see, I have had 3 notebooks in the last 10 years. My first one I used for two and gave to my mom for her to use for her business and she just recently retired it because she needed something a little faster (that means it lasted from fall of 2003 to august of 2010 and beyond). My second one I used for 4.5 years and gave it to my dad because he needed a reliable portable replacement for his business; here we are 2.5 years after that and that computer is still going strong (has not even needed to replace the battery yet). I replaced that one because I needed something with a little more horsepower for some of the data analysis and 3D modeling I do for work. Now I am running on 2.5 years on my current one and it still looks and functions like new. All of these are windows machines - granted I do dual boot with scientific Linux for work related reasons. I travel with my computers, they are on and used heavily darn near every day of the week, typically for 8 to 14 hours a day. In fact the total hard drive hours on my current computer is *checking* 6486 hours. Maybe I have been lucky, maybe I buy quality stuff to begin with, maybe I treat it differently than others, maybe a mixture of the three as well as other factors. Who knows. If I spend money on a machine, I expect it to last.
  3. lol I don't know about that but I guess we'll see...
  4. My thoughts exactly.
  5. Glad this is working for you but in my field it sure isn't this way. The more I learn the harder and more I have to work and it sure as heck is not reflected in my paycheck. But I love what I do, so I have no real complaints about it.
  6. I have bought and sold a handful of items including a few vehicles through C.L. I took plenty of time to make my listings as complete as possible as well as including DECENT pictures of whatever it is I am trying to sell. I also use FULL grammatically correct sentences with out using 'text speak' or any junk like that. Lastly, when I do communicate with people I try to be very complete and informative in my responses while conveying that I do not have patience for B.S. When selling vehicles I usually have a long talk with them to determine just how interested they are (and how interested I am in actually dealing with them) before setting up a meeting place and whatnot. Overall I have no complaints about C.L. for the price we pay for it. In fact, I have used autotrader to sell a truck a while back and I think that I had more b.s./lowballer/crap calls on the truck from the autotrader ad than I did when I had it listed on C.L. Aside: For what it is worth whoever was flagging you was right to do so. Attempting to sell or purchase firearms or ammunition through craigslist is against their guidelines. http://www.craigslist.org/about/prohibited.items Whether I agree with it or not is besides the point.
  7. I have 20,000+ on my last set of the organic (NOT the HH) pads and about 30% left (measured w.r.t. new pads). I do have a complete set (fronts and back) on standby though and I have started to carefully check them weekly. When we get a warm day on the weekend I will probably go ahead and swap them out for the brand new ones and keep these as spares as it is getting a bit close.
  8. 2 weeks ago I would have moved my foot a little quicker before that 600lb magnet came crashing down.
  9. This is my 2nd bike with a heel-toe shifter and I still think it gets in the way. up until about 2 weeks ago I had only used it sparingly (typically to find N or to try to force myself to use it to see if I liked it). Well, ever since 2 weeks ago I have been using it almost exclusively - not because I suddenly like it but because 2 weeks ago I dropped a 600lb magnet on my left big toe rendering it darn near useless without LOTS of pain. My opinion is give yourself an honest try at giving the heel shifter a try - if you still don't like it then get rid of it (or ignore it) . This is going to be one of those discussions that someone will swear it is the greatest thing since sliced bread and others will say that if you use it you will die a fiery death (like using a car tire). I am exaggerating some here (just in case you aren't familiar with my sense of humor) but I think it made my point. Happy trails! I have been since I have injured my toe - Save your big toe from experiencing excruciating agony - Possibly easier for a 'firm' upshift by pushing 'down' instead of pulling 'up' - Something different :confused24: That is entirely up to you, my friend. It is your bike and your feet. I had every intension of cutting my 'heel shifter' off not long after I got my bike... Quite frankly, I just never took time to do it.
  10. Thanks. I guess I may have used Excel once or twice before...
  11. Dave: For what it is worth I thought your initial statement was crystal clear as to what it is you signed and agreed to. After reading through everyone's comments a second time, I too am confused as to how it went a-rye so quickly.
  12. Brian: Just wondering what happened with your not so 'shifty' situation? Did it get resolved? What was the issue? Hope it all got figured out.
  13. OH oh oh - Excellent! I understand what you are talking about now. Thanks for that. I will add that in as well. I will have to come back to it later though as I am about to run out to take care of a few things. Thanks!
  14. He has been through a couple of them and put PLENTY of miles on them all.
  15. No worries. As long as all involved still like motorcycles and enjoy riding I suspect there will be more of that to come. ibid. [ie see above]. Again, I greatly appreciate you voicing your thoughts and opinions in a civil fashion. I am all too familiar with PMS. I travel a lot for work and have only been in Texas for the last few years so while I ride A LOT more now than I did before I moved to Texas, I still have 2-4 week periods that I suffer from PMS. I am happy that it is only 2-4 week periods instead of 3-5 months at a time! SO, did you get out for a ride or not!?!?!?!? I guess that is in the eye of the beholder and quite frankly I see it as irrelevant. :D:D:D:D:D A book, eh? Huh. Hadn't even considered that. Glad you have found some enjoyment out of this. I certainly did not think it would continue with this kind of following! After my first post I figured I would get a handful of comments and then it would ride off in the sunset like most of my threads. I have posted some pictures of her/us at various points but I do not leave them up for very long for various reasons. Stay tuned, I'll put up some more at some point. Sorry for the delay, I have been pretty sparse around here for the last... well... several weeks. Nothing against the great folks on here, I just have been hammered with work and some personal 'things' that have taken time away from my normal visiting here time. Not to mention I have FINALLY been able to get a little riding in. No worries though, while this may be slow to progress as long as the 'spokes' are still turning and people still want to read about it, I will keep up with the updates as they happen. Until next time!
  16. Howdy everyone. Alby: I really appreciate your input and concern. I fully understand where your are coming from and respect your opinion. I suppose I may not have been very clear with the attitudes of everyone involved as well as my own attitude towards riding. I like to ride. Period. I like that other people like to ride too. If other people want to share their enjoyment of motorcycles with me, that is fantastic. I do not discriminate against who wants to ride with me. As far as I am concerned, if someone wants to go for a ride and I am rolling out the driveway, all they have to do is ask and we'll go under the conditions that whoever is wanting to ride can follow a few simple guidelines. First, to ride with me you must wear a helmet, eye protection, closed shoes and long pants. Jackets are optional. Second, there are rules about getting on and off the bike and how they act at slow speeds, corners and if I say 'don't move'. For what it is worth I took my ~55 year old male neighbor for a 45 minute ride because he has been considering a long distance bike and was asking about mine. I have given many of my friends rides (male and female). Now, with all of that, I still see where you are coming from and since my friend (the one referenced in this thread) is riding on her own bike now, the guy has his own bike and I have never intentionally excluded him from an invite to come for a ride. In fact, since the ride in November when I took her sister, I have made a point to not setup the rides and have let her ask me to go with her as to not meddle in anything that ought not be meddled in. As for being used - again I think that I may not have been clear enough in my description of the events. I am not gaining anything out of this other than someone else to ride with [on separate bikes] where I would otherwise be riding solo or with someone else entirely. If we were including other social activities outside of riding, then I would be much more cautious about it because I would likely agree and remove myself from the situation entirely. But since all that is going on is a friendship and mutual enjoyment of our own motorcycles I am not too worried about it. As for her storing her bike in my garage, I have done that for a number of my friends with bikes, so it was not unique to her either. Again, I appreciate your input and opinion especially your willingness to explain and support your views/opinions. I hope that this further explanation has helped clarify what is actually going on and given you a much better picture of the situation. You are not the only one that felt this way either. Long ago, closer to the beginning of the thread there was a similar discussion that occurred.
  17. Good idea. I hadn't really thought through that - when I did this originally (not long after I purchased my bike) I was just interested in a 'ball-park' figure as I wanted to know roughly what the RPMs were at my shift points since I did not have a tach. Sorry, I do not really understand what you are suggesting with the 'tire circumference calculation'. The way I have it setup is that all one has to input is the diameter of the tire (which I figured was the easiest thing to measure) and then it calculates the circumference. I left that separate from the actual speed calculation for a few reasons. 1) I was curious about the variation in speed based on a new and fully worn tire (which required the tire size to be variable 2) It made it easier to trace silly errors in the way I typed out the formulas 3) I wanted to use the circumference for a different calculation that is not included on the sheet that is in here 4) It allows for easy adjustment for other vehicles.
  18. Okay so I got a good laugh out of this post and Jean/Earl, I am not laughing at you at all - my laughter is at the custom's agent that you spoke with as he clearly had a sense of humor. While there IS some truth to what they told you it is a very short winded and my guess is that explanation is good enough for most people that call in wondering what is taking so long. Truth is, you are lucky that you were able to talk to anyone at all. It is a little more involved than whether the package blows up or not. There is plenty of truth in the statement that whatever agent signs that the package has been inspected and allowed to pass through is simply that whoever authorizes it MAY be held liable for whatever happens with it once it leaves the port. The truth in the matter is that they inspect for much more than just explosives and with the increase in imports during the holidays and reduced man hours, it is only reasonable to see that they could get backed up on their inspections a little more than normal. Not to mention if something happened to be found in a crate that your shipment was also included in, that would delay processing in your particular package. I hope this sheds a little more light on the topic. Hopefully ya'll will get your orders soon.
  19. Thoughts and prayers will be with you and your family while you are away. Thank you both for your service and sacrifice for this great country! Gdspeed.
  20. WOW. Looks like it came that way! Nice job!
  21. I have found that the inside of my pants get wet due to the water that runs off of the tank and into my lap. I have found that if I make a conscious effort to not let my knees 'hug' the tank and scoot back just a hair on my seat it helps keep the inside of my legs dry-er-ish. A nice pair of rain pants help too.
  22. Sorry to hear about Roxie BUT sure glad it happened during the warranty period. Hopefully this dealer will do you right THE FIRST time with minimal shenanigans... Wonder if you could get a loner bike while yours is being repaired. (Not being 100% serious about the last comment folks, so chill)
  23. I had done this a while back (because I am a nerd like that). The spread sheet is setup so that all you need to do is vary the tire DIAMETER and the sheet does the rest. I computed it based on what I MEASURED my rear tire to be +/- 0.25 inches. If you would like, you can also change the RPM in the sheet and it will automatically recalculate the different speeds. Each workbook contains two different worksheets; one in English units the other in metric. I have also attached PDFs of each for those of you that do not have Excel, Open office or some other program to read .xls files. *_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_*_ UPDATE: I have now modified the sheet to allow one to input the tire size [good idea Squeeze]. I have left the option for the user to input a measured size too, if you want to do it that way. On the sheet there is a box where you will need to specify "1" or "2" (actually it is either "1" or NOT "1", but whatever) so that the sheet will know which method you would like it to use to calculate the speeds. I do not know where the redline is on the 96 Royal Star, so I simply extended the RPM scale out to encompass whatever is necessary. Same with the VMax. I have NOT incorporated any tire slipping factor in these - yet. I may or may not add that. Hopefully I typed everything in correctly. Let me know if you find any mistakes. It is late and I am tired so there is a good chance I screwed up typing one of the ratios in. Have fun.
  24. I am a fan of the 10-15 dollar 2 or 4 GB ones with no screen and a rechargeable battery. Some run off of a single AAA (which has its advantages too). 2GB is more than enough space for a days worth of music. And for 15 bucks, if something happens to it while I am riding, I am not out the ridiculous amount of cash I would be otherwise. Yeah, I'm cheap like that. Oh yeah, and a few cassettes for when the batteries die on the real long days can be handy if radio reception is sketchy. I don't like the fancy screens or whatever because I don't ever look at it while I am driving anyways, so I don't mind not having a screen using energy that could otherwise be spent on putting out the tunes. Setting up a play-list ahead of time or just loading the songs I want to listen to for that day ahead of time is easy to do.
  25. I certainly respect your opinion and view on this but I do not understand your statement here. Most of the people that I would consider my 'good friends' were female. Many of them went through several guy friends but that never hindered our friendship. I guess I do not understand why one would end a friendship because the friend happens to be romantically involved with someone else. I have been in a few serious relationships. Two ended because the committed female was unfaithful. Another was dissolved based on a mutual decision between the two of us, as we felt it would be better to remain friends (by the way, we were serious enough that I had permission from her father to wed, the wedding was planned, etc). We were friends for 4 years before we went steady, were steady for over 3, and have been good friends ever since (~5 years since). Maybe I am an anomaly, but I have never really understood the philosophy that two people cannot be 'simply friends' just because they are of opposite gender. Her and I have talked about the potential conflicts on several occasions and she reassures me that there is no problem. She is fine with it and claims that he is fine with it too. So, all I have to go on is her word and my evaluation of each of their behavior. As part of our discussion she repeatedly points out that many of her good friends are guys as well. At this point, I will reserve further comments and opinions of him until a later time that may or may not be appropriate to discuss them and, more importantly, have more complete basis for my evaluation of the observed behavior. On a related but different note. I am not seeing any drama or controversy. I get some riding in, have been able to help a friend learn to ride a bike and enjoy riding and another acquaintance has started (and claims to enjoy) riding as well. If my presence has somehow contributed to some strain in their relationship then my presence may be a catalyst but certainly not the cause of their problems. Nothing has happened between us and nor would I allow anything to, until knew much more about the entire situation. Especially after some of my past experiences, I do not have any interest into 'jumping' into a committed relationship until I really know the person for who they are and all that goes with it.
