Buzzing instead of starting
LilBeaver replied to Dave77459's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I would also double check to make sure all of the connections are tight. Using a small flathead screwdriver to lightly tweak some of the contacts in the connectors will help make sure that you get a good connection within these connectors. To check the battery use the voltmeter across the terminals with the bike in the 'off' position first, then 'on' and lastly in the 'on' position while depressing the starter button. This is a reasonable way to do a load test on your own battery. All readings should be above ~9.5V. In the off position it should definitely be above 11.5V. ---- One other connection to check that I suspect is commonly overlooked is the main fuse connection. On my RSV it is behind the cover that is behind the passenger's left floorboard cover (next to where their ankle would be). I had my connection come loose enough to cause some problems with my bike and it was strange that my bike would run fine but would occasionally give me weird electrical blips including funny noises on attempted starting. Hope whatever your problem is you are able to determine it quickly, conclusively and inexpensively! -
There is a reason my 'typical ride' ends up spanning 400-800 miles...

That is a new one on me! Of course my ride down hwy 87 to San Angelo was... um.... quite uneventful. I am most definitely taking a different route home tomorrow!

My condolences...

If you baked it (150-200 degrees for ~45 minutes) you could wax it (applied by hand) within 24 hours. I assume that was not an option for you so I personally would wait at least 1 week or maybe even two (after the paint is no longer 'tacky', which it shouldn't be after 1-2 days). Again, definitely applied by hand this first time. Also, don't use a power washer on it for 4 to 6 weeks. Hope that helps. How did you prep the surface?

Slow day at work, eh? Or is it "all" of that cold weather and snow that is catching up to you?
-
You do not need a clear coat over an enamel paint. What I would recommend though is a nice coat of wax/car polish to help protect the finish from wear and tear from the road (road grime, oil, dirt, etc), weather elements and especially the sun. [For what it is worth my family owned/operated a body shop for a few years. I primarily did paint and body work, so I have played this game a few times.] Looks great!

The request was implied... Yeah, that's what I am going with...

Apparently you missed the ipod and ipod adapter that comes with the 2012 bikes too. Not to mention the Aux input that is right next to the cassette deck that has been there since 1999. Personally, I like having the versatility and all of the options. By the way, my cassette tapes don't skip [yes apparently I am old and crusty enough to still have and use cassette tapes ] like CD players do nor do the batteries ever need to be replaced/recharged like my MP3 player does. The addition of the ipod/interface (actually having to go with the ipod is a topic for a separate post that I will leave to that) alleviates the problem of having to worry about powering the device or not being able to control it through the bar mounted control. The fact that these bikes have not been changed significantly in the last 12 years is something that I am happy with to as I can still find the accessories, after-market and OEM parts that I need and want. Not to mention the resale value is still going to be pretty good for me since it is still an active model. I am quite happy with my bike, it is comfy, smooth and while there are some things on it that I would not mind seeing a little different, it suite my needs and desires enough that I am happy sticking with it for now. Those are my opinions, take them or leave them as you wish.

Oops... No I am not. Sorry about the confusion/being unclear. It has been one of those days... When I change mine I use my Carbon_One freestanding adapter to hold my bike up. My garage floor is level-ish in some places. I usually check the oil level while on the [carbon_one] stand then again with me holding it up right while on the floor. I also meant to add that if I do a quick change I will only put in a little over 3 quarts. By 'quick change' I mean do the following: Warm up bike, pull drain plug, remove old filter, replace new filter, replace drain plug then fill. I have found that if I pull the drain plug and then walk away and let it sit for 5-10 minutes or so before pulling the filter, I end up putting in another .25 quart or so which is exactly why I try to avoid being so impatient during my changes. Again, sorry about the ambiguous posts my brain has been all over the place lately... I guess that is a sign that I have not been riding enough!

I'm sure happy with the adjustments he made to my seat; only regret is that I didn't send it to him sooner!
-
I too use the short filter and when I change mine, I usually end up using 3.25-3.5 qts.
-
I suspect that you are probably not getting all of the old oil out at each change. Also, the amount of oil that the bike will take is very dependent on the size of filter you use, they can range from .25 to .75 qts (I think) depending on whether you end up with a short or long one. Just a thought. Since you say your bike spews oil out if you use more than the 3 quarts, I probably wouldn't worry about it so long as you are sure that your trike is actually level and that you have your oil in the site glass.

+1 to that! I used to keep my cell phone in the trunk and had similar thoughts. Now that I wear a crash jacket it is very convenient to toss it in the zipper/waterproof pocket and call it good. Glad you are mostly okay, hope the recovery is quick, complete and as painless as possible!

It is where the optional turbo attachment hooks into, apparently you don't have it. :witch_brew::stickpoke:

I have to say that I have seen a number of pictures of this in the building process and in action and I think this is a superb idea. Brian, you may want to seriously consider looking into copyright/patent for this. I have been on the fence about trailers and the bike for a long time, this would be the perfect solution for my wants and needs!

I had a flag on my radio antenna for a month or 2 (granted I did have a cross-country trip in there) and kept it towards the base of the antenna. I never noticed any extra fluctuations or motion of the antenna but what I did notice is that the flag rubbed right through the paint on the trunk. I would highly recommend against putting a flag there for that reason alone.

I'm not sure if I have misinterpreted your statement or not but just incase you did not know, the Mobil 1 'Racing 4T' is the 10w-40 'Motorcycle specific' oil that IS fully synthetic. http://www.mobiloil.com/usa-english/motoroil/oils/mobil1_racing_4t_10w-40.aspx#

I had initially meant my bike and her bike... But since my last post there have been quite a few miles put on my truck (mid October wedding in the mid-west) and a few international flights (thanks to work) As previously stated, 15/Oct/2011. BUT, don't get ahead of yourself, it was a good friend of mine that got married

Oh boy... I had not realized how behind I had gotten on here. Don't worry, PLENTY of new (and good) stuff going on. I will try to get something written up in the next week or two; including some pictures. Preview: Lots of miles put on, a few trips, etc etc.

I am interested to find out what the date code ends up looking like on your tire. 'Amazon does have a few different provisions for various situations (families, preggo mothers, students etc) I am enjoying a 6 month free trial of the amazon prime for 'students' (since I have a .edu e-mail address) All of the benefits (except the instant streaming) of amazon prime for free (until my free trial runs out, then it is just 1/2 of the normal price) and even if I did have to pay full price, it is hard to argue with the $6.70/month for the whole shebang! Hope all works out well with your brother :-\ ------------------------- I am special... at least that is what my parents told me growing up... : Instead of going through all of those shenanigans you might want to try simply downloading and installing a 'winders' based browser via the 'Wine' package in Mint. Wine emulates the winders environment and installing one the winders version of the browsers you ought to be able to utilize the 'appropriate' plug-ins. I don't know why mine works just fine (I primarily use Scientific Linux) and ya'll seem to not but I have had to force and rewrite some of the packages that I use anyways so I may have tweaked something enough to allow the proper plugins for the DRM to work Oh yeah, by the way Sorry about that Dave!

I am a Linux user and do not have a problem running Netflix on it... At least the few flavors that I have tried it (Scientific Linux, MINT, OpenSuse...) But maybe I am special...
